It’s been a while since we did a blog post together and I’m so thrilled to have my sister back again to answer the Mid Year Book Freakout Tag with me! We’re going to recap some of our favorite books read so far this year, and hopefully make your TBR grow a little bit with it. Fingers crossed!
Please, let us know your favorites of the year so far in comments!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2024

Nyx: All the Best Liars. Just wow! This book left me speechless with all the twists, I just couldn’t put it down! If you’re into YA thrillers dealing with obsession, manipulation and intense friendships, this one is definitely for you!
☂️ Read the All The Best Liars review

Marie: Oh, this book. Ellen O’Clover is one of my favorite authors of all times, really. This book didn’t seem like much more than a YA contemporary book with anxiety rep and complex mother daughter relationship, at first. And yet, oh it was so much more. I ached and cried and loved it so much.
☂️ Read the Someday Daughter review
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024

Nyx: Obsidio! Going into it, I was a bit scared because I read the previous ones such a long time ago. But I got back into it really easily and I must say it totally blew my mind! One of the best Sci-Fi series I’ve read so far.

Marie: I haven’t read any sequel this year, aside from a re-read of Delirium, one of my favorite series of all times, soooo… I’m going to pick that one!
3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to

Nyx: The Breakup Tour. A rising-star musician has a second chance at love with an old flame? And do I sense some Taylor Swift vibes? Yup, count me in! Really looking forward to this swoony romance!
☂️ Read The Break-Up Tour review (Marie’s thoughts!)

Marie: I loved the first book, Girls I’ve Been, so I couldn’t not run and get its sequel. That being said, it’s a bit of a tough book to handle, because lots of actions and triggers, so… I’ve been waiting to be kind of ready for it?

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

Nyx: Where Are You, Echo Blue? “A smart, juicy, and page-turning novel about celebrity, fandom, and the price of ambition following a journalist’s obsessive search for a missing Hollywood starlet” ? It feels like this novel was exclusively been written for me! I CAN’T WAIT (yes, all caps) !!

Marie: Yup nothing more to add here, really, I need this book like, yesterday.
We also have a full blog post with some of our most anticipated reads for the second part of 2023!
5. Biggest disappointment

Nyx: Love Redesigned. It’s a steamy, small town romance about two family friends-turned-childhood rivals. It looked great but unfortunately I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The story dragged a lot and the characters lacked chemistry and connection. The spark just wasn’t there.

Marie: It wasn’t a big disappointment, just kind of a… I expected a bit more from it? I enjoyed the book overall and found it entertaining, but I expected it to slap me in the face like the Inventing Anna tv show did, and I didn’t get that.
6. Biggest surprise

Nyx: The Split. What a rollecoaster ride! I was pulled into the story from the very first page. I enjoyed the diverging timelines, the shocking events and the characters. What a truly thought-provoking book!
☂️ Read The Split’s review

Marie: Yup I’m going to be screaming about this book for a long, long time, because I need to read and we need to scream more about books with 20-somethings completely lost in their professional (and personal) lives. I loved this super relatable, incredible book.
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)

Nyx: Shauna Robinson from Must Love Books. She writes with humor and heart. I loved her character Nora, she was easily relatable. The mental health representation was on point. And a story about books and finding your path? Hell yes! Go read it now!

Marie: I know I’m going to be reading all of Lynn Painter’s books, because Better Than the Movies was SO fun. Such a fantastic contemporary read, sweet, swoony, fun, loved loved it.

8. Newest fictional crush

Nyx: Ethan from Those Summer Nights. He needs to be protected at all cost. He’s sweet and kind. I loved how Ethan and Hannah learn how to talk about the things that weigh heavily on them and help each other out.

Marie: Ahh this is such a great book with excellent character growth and the chemistry’s off the charts, really. I really enjoyed Theo as a love interest here!!
9. Newest favorite character

Nyx: Eloise from All Alone With You. She’s grumpy, too nervous to hang out with people and always thinking the worst in social situations. I had such a soft spot for her (because maybe in some ways I’m a bit similar to her…). I loved to see her grow and get out of her confort zone.
☂️ Read All Alone With You’s review

Marie: I had SO much fun reading this book, friends, and Olivia was such a great main character to follow. She might be a bit obstinate, at times, but I really loved her drive and she was just great to follow overall. One of my fav!
☂️ Read Heiress Takes All review
10. Book that made you cry

Nyx: All That’s Left to Say. Meet Hannah. One year ago, her cousin Sophie, who was also her best friend and the person she loved most in the world, died of an overdose. Drowning in grief, Hannah became obsessed with one question: Who gave Sophie those pills? It’s poignant, powerful and yes I shed a few tears…

Marie: I said it all above, but this book made me cry because too relatable and I adore it with all of my heart.
11. Book that made you happy

Nyx: Those Summer Nights. Aka the perfect fun book for the summer! It has all the right ingredients: an amusement park, a second chance friendship and a sweet romance. It made me smile from the very first page to the very last one!

Marie: There’s something about this series that just makes me HAPPY. I’m having SO much fun reading about these adventures, this royalty, this adorable romance.
12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

Nyx: You, with a View. Just look at that cover! It’s gorgeous! The drawings, the colors, the fonts. 100% loving it!

Marie: I’m a huge, huge fan of Rachel Lynn Solomon’s work, it’s no secret. I got to meet up with the ever amazing Cathy @ Daydreaming ink this month and she got me the Barnes & Nobles edition with sprayed edges and I AM SO GRATEFUL AND IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK.
13.What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
Marie:
- Girls Who Burn : It’s a YA thriller and it has enemies to lovers and a girl trying to figure out what happened to her sister and oh my god I’m already obsessed with it.
- Business or Pleasure : Another Rachel Lynn Solomon! It’s her only romcom I haven’t read, just yet, and I can’t wait!
- A Song To Drown Rivers : I love Ann Liang’s contemporary books and I can’t wait to see what she does in the fantasy world!

Nyx:
- The Legacies: It screams Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars! Money, secrets and parties. It sounds right up my alley!
- I Hope This Doesn’t Find You: Never Have I Ever meets To All the Boys if Lara Jean wrote hate emails instead of love letters. Do I need to say more?!
- Better Than the Movies: Rom-com? Enemies-to-lovers? Cute banter? Yes! Yes! And yes!

I haven’t heard of either of your favourite books of the year so I’m going to have to go and check them out on Goodreads.
I somehow never read the Delirium books (I’m pretty sure the series came out when I was in a major reading slump) but as a major dystopian fan it’s definitely on my TBR.
Ooh I hadn’t heard of The Break Up Tour but I’m very intrigued especially as I remember the author duo being a favourite of Marie’s. Or Where Are You, Echo Blue – another to add to my TBR.
I’m glad you enjoyed The Split so much. I’ve only read one book by the author and I was conflicted by it as the ending was a let down. It’s wonderful to hear that this one seems stronger though.
And I adore the cover of You, With A View; so pretty 😍
I’m going to have to add All That’s Left To Say to my TBR as well.
Ooh I’ve actually already read A Song To Drown Rivers and loved it. I won’t say too much, just that the writing was truly mesmerising.
My favourite read of the year so far has been The Familiar but there have been some close competition too which I truly adored including Hera, Babylonia, The Silence Factory, Day One & The Shadow Key.
Yeees, I hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we did! 😁
Aaaah you’re going to love the Delirium books 😍
Really looking forward to reading The Break Up Tour!
Yees, The Split was very good! I didn’t think I would enjoy it that much 😊
Oooh, I need to check all those out 😁😁
Thank you so much for stopping by and happy reading 😘😘
Thank you.
It’ll be wonderful to finally read them, having had them on my Kindle for so long 🙈
Thanks again, happy reading to you too.
Nyx: I’ve been so let down by today’s popular romance authors (particularly Elsie Silver, Ali Hazelwood, Ana Huang, Abby Jimenez…) that I’m sooo scared to read something from Lauren Asher! I’m so sorry Love Redesigned was a disaapointing read for you.
Marie: I’ve been hearing all about how adorable You, with a View is and it’s on my TBR! So excited to hear that the MMC is a new fictional crush for you. <3 Curious about how Ann Liang will handle the fantasy elements in A Song To Drown Rivers too!!
Have an amazing rest of 2024, girls! <3
Ahh I hope you’ll love both You, With a View and Ann Liang’s book. I can’t wait to read that one! Thank you so, so much Aimee!! <3
I need to write my mid year post too. I love illuminae files and obsidio was amazing.
Yes, you dooooo 😁
Totally amazing 🤩
Thank you so much for stopping by 😘😘
I’ve never heard of Where Are You, Echo Blue?, but it sounds like something I will love! There are so many books here that I haven’t read, especially now that I’m in the mood for some contemporary so thanks for the many recommendations!
It sounds SO good, I can’t wait to read it!! Thank you so much for reading <3
I keep getting nonced when I try to comment from your site. *sad face* You With a View was fantastic! The road trip, the story, the romance — so good! I am so happy you are enjoying Painter’s books. I think her YA are better than her adult books, but they are all very good. Can’t wait for more Liz and Wes this fall.
Oh no that’s so strange 🙁
That’s good to know about Painter’s books, I have yet to try her adult books. Thanks so much, Sam!! <3
I swear I just came here to grow my tbr exponentially!! Where you are echo blue sounds particularly good- and it’s got an endorsement from both of you! Great list!
😂😂😂 We never have enough books!! 😁
Yeees, I’m so excited to read it!
Thank you so much for stopping by 😘😘
Oooh I see i wasn’t the only one late to Lynn Painter! I love Better Than the Movies! I think my next favourite is The Do Over, that’s a great one too 😀
Ahhh I have this one on my TBR next, can’t wait to read it!! 😀
Loved seeing your answers! 💞 I’m so excited to read The Someday Daughter after loving the author’s debut novel 🥰 I hope you enjoy Business or Pleasure, it was so good! 😊
I can’t wait for you to read the Someday Daughter, I feel like you’d love it!! <3
