I discovered Kit Frick’s books with The Reunion, last year and since then, was eager to read more. I’ve been in a really thriller/mystery mood lately, so The Split perfectly fit the bill. Let’s see what I thought about it, shall we?

Jane Connor is resigned to being the “plain Jane” of her family—pragmatic and dependable—so unlike her beautiful and impetuous younger sister Esme. When Esme calls Jane during a flash summer storm, announcing she’s left her high-society husband, Jane is shocked to learn her sister wishes to stay with her. Could this be an opportunity for them to become close again? The only catch: Esme needs a ride from the city to their small Connecticut hometown, and Jane is terrified of getting on the highway because of what she did when they were teens. Jane must either let Esme stand on her own two feet for once or jump to her flighty younger sister’s rescue—and her choice cleaves her life in two.
With a rollicking pace and shocking twists and turns, The Split captivatingly explores how little we know the ones we love—and how one small choice can change everything.

I ENJOYED…
☂️
- The Split is split between two timelines, two realities: one where Jane responds to her sister’s call and go get her in New York City by car, during a storm and one where she doesn’t. I just love stories like that, where one decision changes the characters’ entire lives. The way this story was told made it all the more captivating, as well. I couldn’t stop reading and couldn’t wait to see what would happen, next, in each of these realities.
- Jane was a lovely main character. She’s dependable, relatable, a bit anxious, at times. She feels real and the contrast between her and her sister, bolder, louder, spontanous, was wonderful to see. They’re complete opposites, at times, yet the love that ties them together is endless. I love a good sister story and here, it was complex, not without its highs and lows, but… in the end, I just rooted for the sisters to be okay. That’s all I ever wanted, really.

- The Split manages to deal with two mysteries at once: the sister-related one in the present, and the accident-related one in the past. Little by little, we uncover what happened in the past that made the sisters’ relationship a bit rocky and… well, it’s not what I expected it to be. The twist surprised me and I really loved that! Exactly what I want in these kind of books, so, yay!
