Being a debut author is hard. Well, it has to be, since I am not a debut author myself, I can’t really speak from experience on that one. Yet, from everything I have seen and heard, from everything I am imagining whenever I am dreaming of having my own debut someday… it seems stressful and a bit roller-coaster kind of crazy.
So today, I thought I would highlight some young adult debuts that I absolutely loved in the past few years. You know, just because I can and because who doesn’t love it when we shout about books? I know. That’s basically what we are here for.
All the book covers will lead you to the Goodreads pages of the books. You know, in case you want to kill your TBR a little more.
Young adult debuts I have loved with all of my heart
The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas
Obviously, The Hate U Give is a must on this debut-list. It has made some noise a little while ago now and I think that everyone so far has read it and… I get why. Powerful, unforgettable and oh, so important. The family vibes are everything in that one as well. (TW: gun violence, police brutality, racism)
A List of Cages, Robin Roe
If you’re looking to get your heart shattered into a million pieces, well, just read this book. No, seriously, I swear it’s amazing and it has some adorable characters you’ll fall in love with. (TW: abuse)
The Color Project, Sierra Abrams
Look at me mentioning all the heartbreaking and heartwarming books here. That one has it both, plus I’m still thinking about Bee from time to time, so… it deserves all the love. Oh, and there are donuts. You know, in case you’re into donuts at all.
Girl Out of Water, Laura Silverman
I screamed about this book for a little while now but it is well-deserved okay because it’s amazing. It’s about home and family and ugh the characters ugh the love interest everything. This book is looking at me right now from my bookshelf and screaming “re-read meeeeeee”.
Girls Made of Snow and Glass, Melissa Bashardoust
I have read this book because of book bloggers and I regret nothing. It was an adorable book with incredible relationships, such a great writing and interesting world. Overall, a great retelling that deserves praise. (TW: parental abuse, mention of suicide, death, grief. Full list on the author’s blog)
This Mortal Coil, Emily Suvada
I talked about this book recently so I thought skipping it here, but then I thought, what the. I actually loved this so much, the high stakes, the suspense, the characters, the feelings, it was SO good. Also I need the sequel like, right this second. (TW: violence and gore, graphic description of medical procedures)
Children of Blood and Bone, Tomi Ayedemi
I know that this book is probably the most hyped book in the history of ever. But it completely deserves it. You all already probably know why, but in case you haven’t read it just yet, you should. (TW: death, violence, murder, descriptions of war)
Nothing Left To Burn, Heather Ezell
On the contrary that book is not that hyped and what the hell are you doing reading this, go order it now?? It was a fascinating, engrossing story told in a beautiful and compelling way, I couldn’t stop reading and I loved this so much. (TW: abusive relationship)
To Kill A Kingdom, Alexandra Christo
This book has been getting some praise and … I get why. It’s an incredible The Little Mermaid retelling, dark, compelling, with some amazing hate-to-love relationship, a great crew and overall it’s so good.
Emergency Contact, Mary H. K. Choi
Did I scream about Emergency Contact enough? I THINK I NEVER WILL. This book meant everything to me okay. The characters, the relationship, just, ALL THE LOVE for this one.
Honorable mentions, because I apparently can’t or don’t know when to stop
Young Adult Debuts I really, really want to read as soon as I can
You’re Welcome Universe, Whitney Gardner
This book has been sitting on my TBR for a little while now and I really, really want to get it. I love the deaf representation in that one, I’ve heard great things about it and the cover is so pretty okay.
The Reader, Traci Chee
The Reader is one of these books I mentioned constantly to my sister, like “hey, I should buy this one”. Since it’s here, I haven’t bought it just yet and… maybe I should. I’ve heard mixed reviews about that one, but it sounds so intriguing.
You’ll Miss Me When I Am Gone, Rachel Lynn Solomon
Stories with sisters that will make me cry? GIVE ME THAT BOOK ALREADY.
See All The Stars, Kit Frick
This book has been intriguing me right from the start, it sounds compelling and I don’t know, I just have this feeling that I need to read it somehow. This group of friends, this mystery… It sounds AMAZING.
Nice Try, Jane Sinner, Liane Oelke
I have been wanting to read this debut for a little while as well – I love the originality of it and apparently it deals with depression really well, too. I’m eager to discover that one.
The Light Between Worlds, Laura E. Weymouth
Another story with sisters, I’m getting sort-of-Narnia vibes from that one and that cover is way too pretty. Basically I am SO here for that one.
Opposite of Always, Justin A. Reynolds
Is this book going to make me cry? Probably. Does it LOOK and seem incredibly awesome, emotional, profound and one of these light contemporaries you’ll end up thinking about for months? YES. I can’t WAIT.
Your Destination On The Left, Lauren Spieller
I have heard amazing things about this book and I am loving the road-trip vibes and most importantly, the huge character focus and growth I’m already getting from that synopsis.

What do you think of my list? Do you spot any books you already read and loved, or want to read? Which ones would you recommend?
What have been some of your favorite debut authors and books lately? I would love to know, so feel free to share them in comments!

Oh no, my reading list is growing again!
OH aerm, oops, I’m sorry? ??
Thank you so much for stopping by! 🙂
That’s sooooooooo many books ♥♥
I know haha, once we start talking about books… we can’t stop ?
Thank you so much for your comment! 😀
Totally agree witg THUG! And A List of Cages is one that’s been recommended so many times!
THUG was such a stunning book, I can’t believe it is a debut. I loved it so much!
Oh I really hope you will give A List of Cages a try someday, it is so worth it (but prepare some tissues!)
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3 <3
Down and Across was one of my favorites this year. Such a strong debut. Your Destination is on the Left was good, solid read. Jane Sinner was really great. I loved Jane so much! I really enjoyed both The Reader and You’re Welcome Universe too. Some of my favorite 2018 debuts have been: The Kiss Quotient, My So-Called Bollywood Life, Sneaking Out, The Poet X, and Smothered.
Ahhh I am so happy you loved all of these book so much, makes me even more impatient to get to read them, hopefully soon! ?
I have heard SO much about The Kiss Quotient, I really want to read it, I’m also very curious about The Poet X, even if it’s not usually my type of book written differently, but I really want to try it out 😀
Thank you so, so much for stopping by and for your sweet comment <3 <3
I read The Poet X, but I heard the audiobook is really good. The author is a spoken word poet and she reads the story.
Ohhhh wow, that’s so great. I maybe will have to try out the audiobook then 😀
Great post! I so badly want to read Children of Blood and Bone.
Aw thank you so much! I hope you will get to read it soon, it was such an amazing book 😀
I LOVED Seven Ways We Lie. I really liked THUG. I need to finish Children of Blood and Bone – I had to return to the library before I was finished. I have a List of Cages and Always Never Yours to get to still. Great list!!
OH I loved Seven Ways We Lie so, so much as well, it was such a great book. I loved everything else the author wrote as well – did you read her other books? 😀
I hope you will get to finish Children of Blood and Bone, I really enjoyed this book, as well as A List of Cages (prepare some tissues) and Always Never Yours (so adorable <3)
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment, Grace! 😀
There were a couple debuts you mentioned that I loved! This Mortal Coil, American Panda, Emergency Contact, and The Hate U Give were all amazing! I also have yet to read The Reader, but I’ve wanted to for a while! I’m also interested in Nice Try, Jane Sinner. My two favorite debuts I’ve read this year has been The Martian by Andy Weir and Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli!
Ahh I’m so glad we have so much in common, yay! ? I can’t wait to read Jane Sinner and The Reader, both books sounds amazing and I only heard positive things so far about Jane Sinner 🙂
Oh I’m so happy you loved Simon vs. it is such an endearing, adorable debut, I loved it so much <3
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3 <3
My brother is trying up and down to get me to drop everything and read “Nice Try, Jane Sinner” and it’s soooo weird because this kid never used to read and now he’s like “oh, I read this amazing YA contemporary you absolutely need to read right now.” Siblings are fun.
Another debut that will shatter your heart into a million tiny little pieces (but also TW: abuse) is “A Thousand Perfect Notes” by C.G. Drews. Not sure if that one is already on your radar, but it is reeeeeallly good and heartbreaking, but good. I’m working through 2018 debuts in hardcopy for the rest of the year (or ’til I run out)… I LOVED “Not the Girls You’re Looking For” by Aminah Mae Safi and “The Wicked Deep” by Shea Ernshaw.
So many good debuts this year, lets see what else:
– Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely
– American Panda by Gloria Chao
– The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert (I liked this one, but it’s super mixed).
Have you seen Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl’s Debut Authors Challenge? She does a different one every year, but I’m both participating and discovering new books through it.
Really great post, Marie. Loving it.
Oh wow ? well… that’s pretty amazing, I mean, he reads YA books, you can chat together about them and give each other recommendations, maybe? 😛
OH YES, I am so happy you are mentioning A Thousand Perfect Notes. That one is already on my radar and I am so impatient to read it, even if I think I need to be emotionally ready. It sounds like a powerful debut and I am impatient to get to it! I also CAN’T WAIT to read The Wicked Deep, that book sounds so atmospheric and I don’t know, I have a feeling about that one haha 🙂
I have read and really enjoyed both American Panda and The Hazel Wood as well, yay! I haven’t heard of Gunlinger Girl, I’ll have to check it out, thank you! 😀
Oh I did not know that challenge at all, thank you for pointing it out, I’ll have to check it out 😀
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment, Amber, that means the world <3 <3 <3
The only one I’ve read is THUG, and I really liked it. I saw A List of Cages at Walmart yesterday and was really close to picking it up. I decided that I had enough unread books at home, but I kind of want to go back and get it while it’s still on sale.
Ohhhh… well, if I were the voice of reason, I would tell you to wait and get it later, but this book was SO good and it’s on sale, you should GET IT ?? It’s such a great read, seriously, whenever you get around to reading it, now or later on, I hope you will love it 😀
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3 <3
YAAAAY SO HAPPY TO SEE CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE AND TO KILL A KINGDOM ON YOUR FAVORITES ♥♥♥ I still need to read The Hate U Give, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, American Panda, Down and Across, and The Beauty that Remains. I’ve also been hearing beautiful things about You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone, but grief books make me kind of anxious so I don’t know if I’ll read it! D:
Both of these books were AMAZING and certainly worth the hype, I loved them! ?
Oh I really hope you’ll get around to reading all of these books, I’m especially eager to know what you think of The Hate U Give! And The Beauty That Remains was amazing, but if grief books make you a bit anxious… that one is dealing with grief as well, so take care while reading, if you do <3 I completely get that, it's important to feel in the right headspace, or maybe if you know you might not handle it well, to stay away from these books altogether <3
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Aimee!! <3 <3 <3
I should get a hold of Emergency Contact!☺️ You have a great list of recs here Marie!?
AHHH YES you should it is an AMAZING book ? I hope you will love it!
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment, that means a lot! <3 <3 <3
Sure!? And thank you for sharing this!?
The Hate U Give is absolutely fantastic – I was so surprised to know it’s a debut!
You’ve got quite a list here! I love all your picks. The Color Project has been on my TBR for a while and Seven Ways We Lie is a book I really loved.
The most recent debut which I loved was A Thousand Perfect Notes by C G Drews. Cait is not just a great blogger but a fantastic writer as well 🙂
Really loved this list – added a bunch of them to my TBR 😉
I know right? I am always surprised whenever I think back about this book and realize it’s a debut. It doesn’t seem like it, at all! 🙂
Ahhh I am so happy to hear you loved Cait’s book, I can’t wait to read it, it sounds incredible and very emotional, too. I can’t wait 😀
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment! <3 <3 <3
I hope they don’t ruin The Hate U Give in the movie though… Book-to-movie adaptations are always hit or miss.
Hope you like Cait’s novel – it really is beautiful 🙂
I hope they won’t – I am always nervous about adaptations as well, but…I want to trust them for that once. I want to try haha. Fingers crossed! 😀
The light between worlds looks so cool! You have some awesome books on this list! I really want to read to kill a kingdom, it’s been on my list for ages
It sounds INCREDIBLE, I can’t wait to read it 😀 I hope you’ll get around to reading To Kill A Kingdom at some point, it was really good 🙂
Thank you so much for stopping by! 😀
Opposite of Always sounds like a total tearjerker. I can’t wait to get my heart ripped out by that book. There are so many books on this list that have been sitting on my tbr for a while now. I adored To Kill a Kingdom. The Hate U Give is probably the one I’d say I need to read, but I’m in this whole embracing the slump phase, so I’ll wait until I get my mojo back. I did recommend the book to a customer at work the other week so I’m hoping that makes up for me not having read the book yet haha.
I know right? It sounds so, so sad yet amazing and I am so impatient to read it. It seems like I love getting my heart ripped out as well haha 🙂
I hope you’ll get to read The Hate U Give soon, I loved this book so much and can’t wait to hear what you think of it 🙂
Thank you so, so much, Lois! <3
These all seem like amazing debuts Marie. I feel like with debuts if you look at authors like V.E. Schwab or Leigh Bardugo their writing kind of improves the more books they release so if these debuts are amazing imagine what the next book these authors come out with will be like! 😀
I loved THUG, sometimes it’s hard to remember that it was Angie Thomas’s debut, it’s become one of those phenomenon books everyone seems to have read/loved. I haven’t read a lot of the books on this list, but one of my favourite recent debuts is Sea Witch by Sarah Henning.
Great post Marie! 🙂 <3
OH yes, exactly! These debuts were all incredible so I can’t wait to see what they put into the world next. I am so excited about it, I’m certain they all will have fabulous sophomore novels afterwards 😀
I have to read Sea Witch at some point, the fact that you love it so much makes me so curious 😀
Thank you so, so much, Beth! <3 <3
Exactly, if this is their debut then as authors they can only really go up from here. It makes me excited because you know what they come out with next is going to be even better!
That’s all right! 🙂 ❤️
Love this post, Marie!! ? Thank you for all of these recommendations; I’ve added so many of them to my TBR, haha. I *really* need to get around to reading The Hate U Give; I know that it’s such an amazing and important book to read for sure. I’ve also read You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone, and I enjoyed it overall (although it wasn’t perfect). I hope you’ll enjoy it too!! ❤️
Aww thank you so much Dezzy, this makes me very happy! <3 <3
I hope you'll be able to read THUG soon, it is such a great book, deserves all of the praise!
I'm curious about You'll Miss Me When I Am Gone now, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I hope I can read it soon so we can chat about it afterwards 😀
Quite a few of the books I’ve been looking forward to reading are on the list of ones you love, and now I just want to go and read them all!
Ohhhh well… maybe that’s a sign and you should read them soon? 😀
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3
Enough of a sign for me 😛
I totally agree with your picks! I haven’t read THUG yet, but I hope I can do it soon before the movie comes out! I’m currently reading Children of Blood and Bone (finally making progress with it and getting excited because I’m about halfway), and I enjoyed To Kill a Kingdom so much!
Another debut you should totally read is Ash Princess! Really, royalty and revolution themes never get old XD
Oh I hope you will read THUG soon, I would love to hear what you think of it 🙂
I hope you’ll enjoy Children of Blood and Bone until the end, I really loved this book a whole lot more than I thought I would 😀
Ohhh I remember you talking about this book yes, I need to add it to my TBR 😀
Thank you so, so much, Pam! <3
EMERGENCY CONTACT IS MY EVERYTHING.
And a list of cages is sooo good.
AHHHHHHHH we are soulmates haha I LOVED EMERGENCY CONTACT SO MUCH it was amazing and gave me all the feels. <3 <3 <3
It seems like we have the same taste in books haha that's so cool 😀 Thank you so much!! <3
Yeah that’s really cool !!❤
But I actually saw a lot of negative reviews of emergency contact, and I Don’t like saying that, but I DON’T UNDERSTAND and I KILLS ME. It’s so nice to find someone who loves it ❤ ❤
OH yes, I also read a couple mixed reviews about this book, it makes me really sad 🙁 but well, it’s good to have different opinions in the world for sure 🙂 As for me, I’ll keep on defending and loving this book SO MUCH and forever hahaha 😀 <3
Thanks for a whole new bunch books I wanna read, my Tbr is not going to thank you. Just saying. ??
Awww, oops… I’m sorry…. well, we can never have too many books now, can we? ?
Ohh some good looking books you have here !! Seven ways we lie particularly got my eye
Ohhh Seven Ways We Lie was REALLY great – I’m not usually a fan of multiple POV, but there, it was done SO well, I loved it ? I hope you’ll get to read it soon 😀
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3 <3
Love this post! I’ve read some of the books in your list and I absolutely loved them. Thanks for these recommendations! 🙂
Aww you’re so welcome Raven! Thank you for stopping by 😀
I WANT TO READ SO MANY OF THESE!!!
The Hate U Give was AMAZING and so powerful. I love the plot so so much and the message was just FANTASTIC. The rest I’m dying to read! List Of Cages, Nice Try Jane Sinner and also You’re Welcome Universe are all books that I’m hoping to read as soon as I can but never get to!
GREAT POST!
I am so glad you loved The Hate U Give, it’s such a brilliant book, I can’t believe it’s a debut!
I hope we’ll both get to read all of these books and hopefully will love them 😀
Thank you so much for your sweet comment!! <3 <3
You are going to LOVE You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone, Marie! I’m currently reading Girls Made of Snow and Glass on audio and I have Children of Bone from the library and I must! get! reading! them! Debuts can be so so powerful. I need to read the Girl from Everywhere–it’s been sitting patiently on my shelf for the better part of a year…
I can’t wait to read it, it sounds like the kind of book I would LOVE, I am so impatient 😀
I hope you’re enjoying Girls Made of Snow and Glass so far? And yay for Children of Blood and Bone, I hope you will love it 😀
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Shanti! <3
The only one on this list I’ve read is Nothing Left to Burn, but I definitely agree with you. I thought it was an incredible debut!
Ahhh I’m so glad you have read it, I feel like it needs more praise and love, it was amazing <3
Thank you so much for stopping by! <3
Great list! I just got an eARC of Opposite of Always a few days ago and I know it’s going to be amazing but SO devastating. I’m torn between nervousness and total excitement for it, haha!
Aw thank you so much Destiny! <3 Wow, you are so lucky to have this book already, I can't wait to hear what you think of it – I hope you will love it 😀 <3
Thank you! I hope you are able to get your hands on it soon. I requested it on Edelweiss and was shocked that they approved it really fast! Maybe you could try there?
I already tried and got denied 🙁 but well, I wasn’t expecting to get approved, Edelweiss never ever works for me ?? thank you though! <3
Oh no, I’m so sorry. 🙁 ♥
It’s okay, I wasn’t getting my hopes up or anything about it anyway haha, Edelweiss is too tricky aha 🙂 You’re so sweet <3 <3 <3
Edelweiss can be so weird! There are publishers who approve me all the time there and then there are publishers who will deny me for EVERYTHING but then turn around and approve me on netgalley or for a physical copy. I will never understand it lol!
I’m glad I’m not the only one, Edelweiss is the weirdest, I wish there were some clear rules or reasons for denial, so that I’d understand what’s going on and how it works ?
I have only read Children of Blood and Bone and it was freaking amazing! I can’t believe it was a debut!
I know right? I feel the same way about it, I can’t believe it was a debut, it was SO good 😀
Thank you so much for your comment!! <3 <3
Aww you’re welcome love ?
Ohhh yes and yes to the terror of being a debut (lmao the experience ??) and also the LOVE of reading other people’s!! I adored THUG, A List of Cages and To Kill A Kingdom so so much. It makes me so excited to find epic debut authors because like if they’re already excellent, then their books are going to keep slaying and I am so ready for this. ?
Some debuts I’ve enjoyed this year are definitely: Tyler Johnson Was Here, The Wicker King, Timekeeper, An Enchantment of Ravens, Tiffany Sly Lives Here Now, Anger Is A Gift, and Grace and Fury!!
I CAN’T WAIT TO READ YOUR DEBUT <3 so, so impatient to have my heart broken into a million pieces haha <3
Exactly – if the author's debuts are so strong, this only makes me more impatient to get my hands on their next books, they promise to be even more incredible and I am ALL here for this <3 <3
I can't wait to read Grace and Fury as well as Timekeeper, The Wicker King, they sound AMAZING <3
Thank you so much, Cait! <3 <3 <3
Aahh there are so many debuts on this list that I’ve read and loved? The Hate U Give was of course amazing and so powerful, and Girls Made of Snow and Glass was such a great retelling! I also read Nice Try, Jane Sinner, which definitely has really accurate depression rep (at least for me personally ?). Another debut I’ve loved is Starfish, which I know you got a copy of and I’m SO EXCITED FOR YOU TO READ IT!!!
Oh that’s so great that you enjoyed Jane Sinner, I really can’t wait to read that one, it sounds amazing! 😀 And YES STARFISH, I have a copy and I am so, so impatient to read it, I hope I can pick it up SOON 😀 <3
Thank you so much, May! I hope you've been doing well <3 <3 <3
Great list of books! So many of these I am dying to read.
Thank you so much, Ashley! Here’s to hoping you will read at least a couple of these 😀
I want to read The Hate U Give, Girl Out of Water, Emergency Contact, and Opposite of Always! I haven’t been an avid reader until just two ish years ago so I have a lot of books to read, but I’m excited! Also if you publish a novel, I would read it right away! <3
Ahhh that’s so sweet wow I’m going to cry ? hopefully someday I will publish a book that would be a dream ahah. Thank you! <3 <3
I hope you will be able to read some of these books, they are al incredible reads! <3
This is such a great post, Marie!?
I love it when authors have a debut that makes you look at it and go, “this is a debut? then I can’t imagine what the rest of their books will be like!” That’s how I felt about THUG, A List of Cages, Girl Out of Water, American Panda, and many others, those are just the ones that you mentioned, haha.
I really want to read Children of Blood and Bone soon! I’ve heard so many good things about it and I’m really looking forward to it. 🙂 Same with Your Destination is On the Left, and I just added so many of the books you mentioned to my TBR, so THANK YOU for the recs!
I’ve read You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone, and have mixed feelings about it? It was a great story but at times I just felt so frustrated with the characters. I’d still recommend it though, overall it was a good read!
OH I love having that feeling as well, it’s pretty incredible to see how strong some debuts can be. It makes me even more impatient to get to the author’s next book, as I am certain they will be incredible, too 😀
I can’t wait for you to read Children of Blood and Bone, I hope you will love it just as much as I did! 😀
Oh no I’m sorry to hear that, it’s always a bit frustrating when you don’t get the characters :/ I’m still curious to read it though, I’ll let you know for sure when I do 😀
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Olivia! <3
So many I need to read! I do own The Hate U Give, and hope to read it before the movie though. I also want to read Emergency Contact (own that too) and A List of Cages.
-Lauren
http://www.shootingstarsmag.net
Oh I hope you will be able to read The Hate U Give soon, it’s such a brilliant read and deserves all of the hype <3
Emergency Contact was incredible – it has some mixed reviews, but I just related to it so much, I loved it <3 and don't forget tissues to read A List of Cages 😛
Thank you so much or your sweet comment, Lauren! <3
“because I can’t or don’t know when to stop” HARD SAME, MARIE. HARD SAME.
Also wasn’t Girls Made of Snow and Glass SO GOOD? I’M SO HAPPY and it just fills me??? with happiness?? I just???? Even though I thought it would be 100% more dark than it actually was lmao.
I REALLY NEED TO READ YOU’LL MISS ME WHEN I’M GONE TOO!! I was approved for an arc on Netgalley and… I still haven’t started it. But the cover is amaazing!
I KNOW RIGHT – there are just way too many books, sometimes I feel like I’ll prepare a small list and then… well, here I am two hours and 1039438 books later. Loving books so much is HARD SOMETIMES haha.
Oh yes – I also thought that Girls made of snow and glass would be way darker than it was?! I loved it, the characters and everything were SO amazing though <3
OHHHHH. That's SO cool that you have an ARC, I hope you'll be able to read it soon, I would love to know your thoughts about it 😀
Thank you SO much for your sweet comment!! <3 <3
This is such a great list! I wholeheartedly agree on The Hate U Give, The Colorful Project, This Mortal Coil, To Kill A Kingdom (one of my favourite books this year so far), Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, Seven Ways We Lie.
Still have to read Girls Made of Snow and Glass, Nice Try, Jane Sinner, and Always Never Yours.
I’m excited for Sea Witch by Sarah Henning! My copy arrived yesterday. ^_^
Ahh thank you so much Inge, you’re so sweet <3 <3
I'm so glad you found so many debuts you loved here – it always makes me so happy to see that we have some of the same taste in books 😀 I hope that you will love the ones you still have to read, especially Always Never Yours. That book was just so adorable, such a great and refreshing contemporary <3
OH that's great! I have heard so many good things about Sea Witch, I hope you will love it! Happy reading! 😀
I haven’t bought books in so long, and it’s literally been so difficult! I have almost no self control, but since I haven’t been reading too much, I guess it’s made it easier. For my birthday, last month, my best friend bought book on like what happens behind the scenes of reality television shows (like the bachelor). It’s been such an interesting read, and extremely different from what I normally read, because I’m not one for reading much non-fiction, but since watching reality tv is one of my guilty pleasures, ready about the reality behind it is super interesting. I think once I finish about 3-4 of the books I own at the moment, I’ll allow myself to purchase one new book, aha! Great post as always Marie xx
Melina | http://www.melinaelisa.com
OOoooohhh Melina, this book really, REALLY interests me?! That sounds SO great! I am not a huge non-fiction reader either, but I LOVE everything about reality shows as well and I have always been so curious about the behind the scenes! What is that book called? 😀
I get it – and I kind of try to do the same thing, try to get my pile lower before I allow myself to get new books haha, so I don’t feel too guilty! 🙂
Thank you so much, Melina!! <3 <3
You’ll get a full update on the book in my next book post when I finish it:)! It’s called ” Bachelor Nation: Inside the World of America’s Favorite Guilty Pleasure”
Ohhh great, I can’t wait to read it then 😀
My favorite debut this year has been The Kiss Quotient.
OHHH. I have heard AMAZING things about this book from everyone, I really need to read it soon, it sounds so great 😀
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3
Yaaaaaaas! I’m so happy to see Girl Out of Water getting the love it deserves! And I just read Always Never Yours and really Enjoyed it. I also spotted on a few on here that I really need to read, like The Color Project and To Kill a Kingdom. Oh, and You’re Welcome Universe is awesome! I absolutely adored it!
AHH I’m so glad you loved Girl Out of Water, this book was AMAZING and it certainly deserves all of the love <3 <3
I'm so happy you enjoyed You're Welcome Universe, it sounds so great, I can't wait to read it 😀
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 😀
I love reading debuts!!! A LIST OF CAGES is one of the best ones I’ve read in a LONG time. I was completely blown away. NOTHING LEFT TO BURN sounds like a book I woudl love. I will defintiely put that on my library list. And I MUST read SEE ALL THE STARS. I think that one is going to be fab!!
Oh I’m so happy you loved A list of cages – it was such a wonderful book, it made me cry as well, it was so emotional haha, but I loved these characters so much <3
I can't wait for you to read Nothing Left To Burn, this book deserves all of the praise and love. I hope you'll love it as much as I did 😀 AND YES See all the stars sound brilliant, so impatient to read it 😀
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment, Michelle! <3 <3
Omg the only debut I’ve read out of this list is To Kill a Kingdom which I love!! I own The Hate U Give, Children of Blood and Bone, and You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone and I still haven’t read any of them! I want to get all of these books except for This Mortal Coil (I don’t know how I fare with dystopians) but this list looks so good! I also want a copy of A Thousand Perfect Notes and I need that ASAP (even though it’s not available in US.. Wah) I definitely need to read more debuts! Love this post!
Oh I’m so happy you loved To Kill A Kingdom, it’s such a brilliant book! 😀
I can’t wait for you to read THUG and COBAB, such wonderful books, deserving all the hype for sure 🙂
As for A Thousand Perfect Notes, have you tried ordering it on book depository? It should be available there 🙂
Thank you so, so much!! 😀
What a lovely list Marie! There are so many books in this list that I enjoyed too 😀 TKAK, COBAB, THUG… to name a few. It always feels good when a debut books do wonders. When a writer is doing a debut, there are obviously so many expectations but these writers have proved that they have long shot to go 🙂
I can’t wait either to read See All the Stars, Jane Sinner, and Your Destination. I have heard amazing things about all of these books. I really hope we do get a chance to read these soon 😀
Ohh thank you so much, Sim, I’m so happy you found so many books you loved there 😀
And yes, I agree, it’s so good when you discover incredible authors like that and… it’s only their debuts, I mean, there are so many GREAT things coming next for them, I am certain of it and I will be there for it too 😀
YAY! Let’s hope we manage to get to these books soon and will love them 😀
Hello Marie <3
Love this list!! How is it that I haven't yet read Children of Blood and Bone yet!? I will have to read it soon. So many books, so little time :')
Oh thank you so much, Sophie! I can’t wait for you to read this book, it is such a brilliant story, I completely get why it’s so hyped haha 🙂 <3
Alrighty, I’ll prioritize this one 🙂 Thanks Marie <3
I haven’t read any yet, but several are on my TBR. I’m pretty sure that Alice Reeds is a debut author, and I loved her book, Echoes.
Oh I haven’t heard of that one, I will have to check it out! Thank you so much for sharing it 😀
I keep hearing about Nice Try, Jane Sinner and I really need to look into checking it out!
Same here, everyone around me has been sharing such great reviews of this book, it makes me even more impatient to read it 😀 Here’s to hoping we will both love it 🙂
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Elizabeth! <3
There are so many wonderful books on here! If I hadn’t known that The Hate U Give was a debut going in, there is no way I would have believed it. It’s utterly phenomenal. ?
I have to agree with you here – I never would have believed The Hate U Give was a debut, either. It’s brilliant, powerful and I just loved it so much. I can’t wait to read everything the author will write next 😀
Thank you so, so much for stopping by and for your sweet comment! <3 <3
Wowww so many amazing books here! Loved The Hate U Give and This Mortal Coil for sure! To Kill a Kingdom was good too. And I need to read most of the others still! On your to-read list, I LOVED You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone, so I would recommend that a million times over. I loved Cait’s book of course! And ummm… The Bird and the Blade was a debut that I really enjoyed!
Ohh that’s good to know, makes me even more impatient to read You’ll Miss Me When I Am Gone. I feel like this book will make me cry, but it seems like a gorgeous story, I am so impatient to get to it. SAME for Cait’s book, it sounds incredible <3
I haven't heard much about the Bird and the Blade, I'll have to check it out 😀
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment, Shannon! <3 <3
The Hate U Give was an outstanding book. I cannot wait for the movie! Have you seen the trailer? Ugh, I know I’m going to cry. I was gifted Emergency Contact, but I haven’t had a chance to read it yet. I’m glad it meant everything to you–hopefully I’ll love it just as much! See All the Stars is one I’m REALLY looking forward to. I believe it comes out the 14th, so just a few more days!
Thanks for this list! I just added a ton of books to my TBR. <3

It really was, I can’t believe it was a debut! I have seen the trailer and I loved it, hopefully the movie won’t disappoint, fingers crosed! 😀
This makes me so happy – I hope you’ll get to read some of these soon and that you will enjoy them <3 Thank you!! <3 <3
It’s really great to see a post spreading some love to debut authors & and their books! Ooh I really loved The Hate U Give (I mean who didn’t!). Girls Made of Snow and Glass and Children of Blood and Bone are on my tbr. Both of those books seem truly incredible and I’m very excited to read it. I’ve also read Emergency Contact! Tbh I forgot or didn’t know that many of the books you mentioned are debuts! I’ve been terrible at keeping track of new releases this year haha. (I read You’re Welcome Universe and it’s really great! Highly recommend it!)
Oh thank you so much, that’s so sweet, I’m happy you enjoyed the post 😀
I can’t wait for you to read Girls Made of Snow and Glass – such a good book, loved the characters’ dynamics! – and Children of Blood and Bone – definitely worth all of that hype, it was brilliant. I hope you’ll love them 😀
OH you have, that’s GREAT! I feel like this book isn’t that well-known, but I am impatient to read it, it sounds lovely 🙂
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment! <3 <3
I had no idea A List of Cages was a debut!!! it’s written so gorgeously and Adammmmmm!!!!!!! ADAM WAS JUST A SMALL ANGEL OF LIGHT. I can’t wait to tbr all of these amazing books, I love this post! c:
Oh yes, I agree, ADAM was adorable and ahhhhhh all of this book was just so emotional. I loved it SO much <3
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3 <3
Okay, there is one book on here that I have wanted to read since it was first announced: Child of Blood and Bone. That cover is just so freaking awesome and it sounds amazing. I am so behind on reading debut novels. I need to choose one and read it.
Oh yes, Children of Blood and Bone is a brilliant debut. It has made some noise in the book blogging community and in publishing overall this year and it deserves all of the hype, it was amazing! I hope you’ll get to read that one soon and will love it as much as I did 😀
Thank you so, so much for your comment <3 <3
Yay, I see so many of my favourites on this list Marie! Children of Blood and Bone and This Mortal Coil were sooo good. Great list and recommendations!
Thank you so, so much Jeann, I’m so happy to see you’re spotting so many favorites here 😀
Ah I love The Hate U Give so much, I am so glad that it is still being talked about:)
Yay!! This book should and will, hopefully, be talked about for many years and decades to come, it deserves all the love! 😀
This post translates as “Hello, I’m Marie and I love books that make me suffer.” ?
But I get you!!! Totally get you on this! I really need to read so many books off your list – The Light Between Worlds, Always, Never, Yours, Girl Out of Water. Just so MANY.
Thank you for always reminding me of these amazing books ❤
Lovely post, as always! I loved the idea because debuts are often overlooked or people think they aren’t really good because the writers aren’t experienced or something. There are so many amazing debuts that need recognition!! ❤ ALSO, READ YOU’LL MISS ME WHEN I’M GONE.
That’s exactly what the hidden meaning of this post was. You know me too well now Marta ??
I agree, so many incredible debuts need more recognition and sometimes, they’re overlooked or too quickly forgotten for bigger names in the publishing industry and that makes me sad. GO DEBUTS! 😀
YES YES YES. I want to, this book WILL make me suffer, won’t it……. ?
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment! <3 <3
I just finished The Hate U Give and it is SO, SO good. I am still thinking about it a week later. :p I really want to read Girls Made of Snow and Glass at some point. Hopefully I can’t get to it soon. Great list!
Ahhh this makes me so happy! THUG was such a great debut – I can’t believe it IS a debut ?. I hope you’ll love Girls Made of Snow and Glass, it was such a great book <3
Thank you so much! <3 <3
Love, love, love this post SO much!
There are so many books on this list that I haven’t read yet, but that I really, really want to read in the near future! The Color Project and A List of Cages are definitely high on that list along with American Panda and Down and Across. I actually read an excerpt of See All The Stars and it was amazing, I cannot wait to read the entire book ?
Seven Ways We Lie by Riley Redgate was amazing! I could not believe that it was a debut novel, I think you and me both have read all her other books and have absolutely loved them! I’m hoping to finish THUG soon, I’ll probably have to start it from the beginning, but I’m excited to read it all over again and hopefully finish it this time.
I really loved this topic and I think this is a brilliant post Marie ❤️
AHHH thank you SO much Michelle, you’re so sweet <3 <3 <3
I can't wait for you to read all of these books, I feel like you could really enjoy them, especially The Color Project (I hope I'm not wrong, I loved it SO much) and A List of Cages (don't forget the tissues) <3 <3
I can't wait to hear what you think of THUG, you'll have to let me know once you're done with it 😀
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment <3 <3
Oh what a great topic, Marie!! I can only agree with The Hate U Give and Children of Blood and Bone! Yes I finally read the latter and it was amazing, I need the second book right now ? I really liked The Reader, even though I sadly couldn’t 100% connect to the characters. However, the world is really unique and interesting + there are little riddles throughout the book, which is SO cool! 🙂
OH thank you SO much Caro, so happy you enjoyed it! I AM SO GLAD you read Children of Blood and Bone and that you enjoyed it so much, it was SUCH a great read, I can’t wait for the sequel to be released! 😀
Oh I’m happy to hear that – I’ve always been curious about The Reader, I can’t wait to read it at some point 😀 Thank you so much, Caro! <3 <3
I NEED the sequel right now, I cannot believe that we have to wait for so long ??? I hope you end up enjoying it! 🙂 ♥
I dont read nearly enough debuts, but I should!! I always see The Reader around -maybe I should give that one a go? ?
I’ve been trying to support debut authors more and more and I hope I’m doing an okay job – there are so many great looking debuts out there 😀
YES YOU SHOULD, we both should! I’ve been wanting to read The Reader for SO long. I hope we both can, soon! 😀 <3
Thank you so, so much for your comment, it's good to see you back around on the blogosphere!! <3 <3
