Do you ever feel like you’re not being negative enough? That’s a strange question to ask, I know, but to be honest… I feel like I fit in that category. I haven’t written a really bad, ranty review in a while – or ever, on the blog. I don’t know if it’s whether I am just good at finding the books I love, or whether I just don’t like writing rants on books, while they seem to be so popular around the book community.
Anyway, for a change – and because I was feeling quite uninspired to write a discussion post or anything, I’ve decided to be negative, for once and to rant a little bit about some books that made me go, NOPE GO AWAY. So I am doing the Nope Book Tag, curtesy of the lovely Marta @ The Cursed Books and May @ My 1st Chapter. Thank you so much to both for this tag!
Also – these are my opinions and I completly respect it if you like any of these books, okay? okay. thank you for listening.
NOPE. ending: a book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage, or simply because the ending was crappy.
Nothing will ever beat Allegiant (the last book in the Divergent series) for that question. I mean, no spoilers, but SERIOUSLY?!
NOPE. protagonist: a main character you dislike and drives you crazy.
The only character I can think of right now, is Mare, from the Red Queen series. I only read the first two books – kind of liked the first one, thought that the second one was a mess, haven’t continued on since. She. Just. Annoyed. Me. SO. Much.
NOPE. pairing: a “ship” you don’t support.
The strange, step-brothers and sister romantic relationship…. I recently read Layover, a story that kind of featured this and I was like, no no no no no no. Not into this.
NOPE. plot twist: a twist you didn’t see coming and didn’t like – liked.
Look at me, changing the questions. Sorry, but I could only think of books where there was a twist I liked. I could quote We Were Liars or, most recently, The Loneliest Girl. Did NOT see these ones coming, but enjoyed them.
NOPE. genre: a genre you will never read.
Erotica, most definitely. Not into it.
NOPE. book format: book formatting you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition.
Hate is such a strong word, I couldn’t think of a book formatting I REALLY hate. Instead, I’m going to share a maybe unpopular opinion here: I prefer buying my books in paperback than in hardcovers. Of course, because hardcovers are most expensive, but even if sometimes I could have the extra money, I just… Well, hardcovers are not that practical and I take my books with me all the time.
Also, they’re damn heavy too. I only buy the hardcover of a book I ABSOLUTELY love / will love because they’re prettier though. Otherwise, when I’m not sure and don’t necessarily have the extra money, I wait. Probably why I haven’t bought Starfish yet.
NOPE. trope: a trope that makes you go NOPE.
Insta-love. Sorry, but you can’t meet someone’s eyes across a room and FALL. IN. LOVE. Nope.

NOPE. recommendation: a book recommendation that is constantly pushed at you, that you simply refuse to read.
Is it time to mention Six of Crows again? WAIT WAIT WAIT, don’t leave, I actually plan on reading that one. Maybe I could mention Red Rising here, because no matter how many times this book is pushed at me, I don’t think I’ll end up reading it, because… I’m not sure it’d be a book for me.
NOPE. cliche: a cliche or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes.
Whenever a book is set in France and people are oh so elegant, oh so sweet with the cutest accent and the streets and monuments and everything is so perfect and so French.

NOPE. love interest: the love interest that’s not worthy of being one.
I’m going to say John, from the Lara Jean series. He was perfectly sweet and boyfriend material and everything, but I am forever team Peter and just think they’re a better fit. To be honest, I wish the whole John thing didn’t happen in any of the books, it did not deserve to be there.
NOPE. book: a book that shouldn’t have existed.
I asked this question to my sister and she answered without missing a beat: TWILIGHT. So…. it’s strange. I have spent a lot of time reading and enjoying Twilight in my early teens, but reading it now, it just would be a massive NOPE NOPE NOPE. So I completely agree with her suggestion.
I could also mention 50 Shades of Grey, because, WHY.

NOPE. villain: a villain you would hate to cross.
Queen Levana, from The Lunar Chronicles, just because she is terrifying.
NOPE. death: a character death that still haunts you.
Can I go with Allegiant again? No? Okay, so maybe 180 seconds, The Serpent King, or The Fault in Our Stars. These three made me cry like a baby and I’ll never get over what happened.

NOPE. author: an author a series you had a bad experience reading for and have decided to quit.
I’m going to change this question again because… why not. I want to talk about Splintered, because this book just made me feel weird overall and I’m definitely giving up on this series, though I can’t say for sure whether or not I’ll entirely give up on the author, yet.
I’m going to tag these lovely people:
- Holly @ Nut Free Nerd
- Tiffany @ Tea & Tiffany
- Aimee @ Aimee Always
- Tasya @ The Literary Huntress
- Aliénor @ Meet The Book World
As well as anyone else wanting to do this!

Do you feel like you’re being too “positive” whenever you write a lot of great book reviews, or is it just me?
What do you think of my answers? Do we have some books in common?
What was the latest book that made you go “nope, not for me”? Let me know in comments!

I loooove this tag, it’s so salty! Completely agree with you about Allegiant, the ending was pretty terrible. I’m also with you on Red Rising; I’ve seen so many rave reviews about it, but I’m just not interested in reading the series. Great tag Marie!
It really is a fun tag – you should do it, if you’re feeling inspired, Kate, I would love to read your answers 😀
I was quite… shocked, by Allegiant’s ending, to be honest, I’ll never get over that ?
Thank you so much!! 😀
I think I’m too negative with my reviews-LOL
I agree with several of your nope’s especially We Were Liars and Red Rising. All my friends LOVE Red Rising and I tried two times and couldn’t do it.
My latest nope was Cruel Prince under the author category. I’ve tried three books by her and her writing is just not for me.
Oh I’m actually glad to hear you mentioning The Cruel Prince – that book and Holly Black’s books in general are quite popular in general haha. I have yet to read any of her book haha 🙂
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 🙂
Love this tag and also I’ve always been a paperback gal myself. Hardback books are HEAVY, they are big, they take up more shelf space and they are more expensive. The only time I get hardback is when it’s either a special book that deserves the hardback finish or if it’s a particularly small book. I think I find it easier to rant about what I don’t like in books than gush about good books anyway so I’ll definitely do this tag at some point! ?
I have to agree with you, I only get hardbacks when they’re special editions or books I just know I will love and am too eager to read to wait for the paperback to be released ??
Yay!! I can’t wait to read your answers for this, it is fun to rant about books haha 😛
Thank you so much for your comment 🙂
Oooh I haven’t seen this tag around before! Thanks so much for tagging me <3
You’re so welcome, Holly, I can’t wait to read your answers 🙂
Oh I do feel as if I’m to positive with the book an movie reviews I do. An Geeze have I had my share of nope endings!
Great post! Also gave me a good chuckle this early morning. ??
Oh thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it 🙂 x
Actually my current read (I See London, I See France) is making me go nope all the way. I still have to get to the part where they go to France, but I’m afraid that this one cannot be saved anymore. I also agree with you on red Queen, although I couldn’t make it throughout the first book at all. Furthermore, we have some more things in common, and I might do this tag too! Not sure if I will answer the questions in English or in Dutch since I blog in Dutch.
Oh no I’m sorry you are not enjoying your current read :/ I hope your next read will be better! <3
And yes, please do this tag, I'd love to read your answers 😀 Whether in English, or in Dutch (I don't speak Dutch, but… it will be an occasion to learn haha) 🙂
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 😀
Hi, Marie! I have to say that I’m always positive. I actually think this is why I’m not great at writing reviews because I just really can’t say bad things about a book. There are some books that just aren’t for me or I don’t feel compelled to buy them but I know there is always an audience that will appreciate them. Having said this, of course I also changed over the years and right now there are many books which wouldn’t be on my shelves but I wouldn’t have the courage to say ‘NOPE’ because once again, I know someone will enjoy them. I haven’t read many of the ones you mentioned here but the Red Queen one and 50 Shades, yes. It took me long to read these series, purely because I hate being a follower and read something just because everyone else is going nuts about it. However, I did read them a few months/years later after their release and I have to say that Mare can definitely be very annoying. And that the 2nd and 3rd books were not as good. *I can’t wait for the last one though ??* and 50 shades, well, I know what a big debate this one is, but again, and even though I liked it, I know it has a special audience.
Anyway, great post and very interesting to see what you love (or hate in this case!?) xx
Oh I get that – sometimes I just wish I could shut the world out and pick out whatever I want, but the community’s influence is MASSIVE. It got me to discover amazing books though, so I can’t be too mad 🙂
I hope that maybe the last book in the Red Queen series will be worth it! 😀 As for Fifty Shades, I totally respect people enjoying these kind of books, it’s great for them, what matters is that we enjoy what we read – it’s just not my kind of book at all ?
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Cat!! <3 <3
And thanks to you, I’ve discovered amazing books too!? so thank you! x
Aww that makes me so happy, thank you!!! <3 <3
I agree with every single one of your answers!!! I was so not ok with the ending of Allegiant. Great post!
RIGHT?? That ending was just… WHAT HAPPENED ?
Thank you so much, Angelica! 😀
omg, okay, so listen, i disagree with the twilight thing. Not because it wasn’t terrible (because it totally was), but because when I was in midddle school, I fell out of love for reading, and if I didn’t fall in love with twilight at the time that I did, I wouldn’t be the huge book lover i am today. But I loved reading this, even with books that I haven’t read yet. Of course I added another book to my list (180 seconds). Great post Marie xxx
Melina | http://www.melinaelisa.com
Oh I completely get that – like I wrote in my post, I enjoyed reading Twilight in my early teens as well and it certainly made me read more books at the time so I am forever thankful for that as well 😀 I think that, if I got to it now, I wouldn’t enjoy it so much – but that’s also because it was quite terrible and problematic and I am reading so many books now, books I weren’t reading before 🙂
I’m so happy to hear that! I LOVED 180 seconds so much – prepare some tissues!
Thank you so much! 😀
Exactly, I read so much now, that I’m much pickier about what I like and dislike. The more I read, the more nitpicky I am with other books ! x
When I was on a New Adult reading spree for a few months, I went through the top books pretty fast. After that SEVERAL books I picked up made me go NOPE. BYE. They had insta-love, the cliche of brooding male character and almost ALL had the male character going around with girls without commitments. I’m so done with that. I prefer sweet guys, thank you very much ?
Great tag!
Ugh no, I’m sorry you had such a bad experience with these books! I’m with you, I prefer sweet guys as well!! 🙂
Thank you so much!! Feel free to do this tag if you’re feelin inspired, I would love to read your answers 😀
ALLEGIANT UGH – not because of the death, per se but because it was just so boring! I agree, fifty shades just shouldn’t exist. I don’t take saying a book shouldn’t exist lightly. I liked Splintered when I first read it but then I read the sequel and just – everything annoyed me about it. I do like the writing but the characters were all just so annoying and erghhhhh
I’m glad you agree with me on multiple things here ? I’m sorry you didn’t like the Splintered sequels – to be honest it made me feel… strange to read the first book, I didn’t enjoy the characters and the overall atmosphere was quite… strange, I’m glad I didn’t continue then ?
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 🙂
You made a good choice there. I just didn’t have a great experience with it haha
I TOTALLY agree with Mare – she was the worst and the reason I also didn’t continue on with the series after the second book.
Wait, so you’re saying all those books that are set in France and are cutesy and perfect are lying to me? France isn’t really like that?? LOL
Oh I’m glad you felt the same way! I heard that King’s Cage is a bit better, but.. I can’t bring myself to go on with this series anyway ?
Well… I always feel like tourists and everyone outside of France always romanticize our country SO much. There are beautiful places and nice people, but honestly it’s not AS dreamy as all the books and movie make it sound. But maybe I’m just biased, given that I’ve always lived here? ?
Thank you so much for your comment, Angela 😀
It would be really interesting if you wrote a post comparing the French culture portrayed in books vs. the real experiences you’ve had in France! I think that French cliche is so common because (at least internationally) France is usually associated with elegance and a romantic language and croissants and baguettes… which, of course, doesn’t embody all of France, but for better or for worse, that cliche has shown up in quite a lot of books I’ve read. ? Have you read any books where you felt like the French culture was portrayed really well? Anyways, I enjoyed reading all your answers! (And yay here’s to preferring paperbacks more b/c they are so much lighter and more convenient to carry around than hardcovers!! ??).
Oh that could be an interesting post for sure! You are just confirming what I always thought and have seen from tourists and everything – how France is always seen as romantic, elegant and so on. there are beautiful places for sure, but… there isn’t just that and I feel like this country is way too romanticized. Of course, I also have another point of view on it, given that… well, I always lived here ?
Hmmm to be honest, not a single book comes to mind right now?! I’ll have to think about it 😀
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Zoie! 😀 x
I’ve been eyeing this Tag for a while, because sometimes I get in the mood for spill some tea 😀 Therefore, I loved reading your answers ? I’ll also join you as a fellow paperback buyer, hardcovers can be soo pricey, so I only get them for my favorite books as well and usually get the cheapest option! Your posts also reminds me, that I still haven’t read Allegiant since I accidentally spoiled myself for the ending at least 5 years ago ?
AH YES please do spill some tea, I’d LOVE to read your answers for this tag as well! 😀
Oh… well I completely understand why you haven’t read Allegiant yet if you were spoiled. That kind of ruined the whole book and series for you, I guess ? I hate when that happens!
I’ll definitely do the Tag at some point to spill all the tea 😀
I hate that too, because now I have no idea if I’ll ever get to that book, especially as I have really fallen out of love with this Trilogy for a while now ?
Ahahah that’s frustrating, but well… I guess if you don’t feel really compelled to get to it… it’s not worth continuing? 😛
Oh no, I’m sorry you’re not a fan of Splintered! That’s one of my favorites but I can see how people wouldn’t like it also. Even I had some problems with the third book.
I totally agree with you about the ending of Allegiant. Just…no.
I also agree about the John romance in the Lara Jean books. I feel like the second book was just pointless to the series because of that romance, and honestly didn’t remember anything about it or him when I read the third book. It just felt so random and unnecessary. Plus, Peter is obviously the best :))
Oh I’m glad you still enjoyed the Splintered series, it was original, really, I just feel like it wasn’t for me :/
I have to agree with you here, that second book felt a bit pointless – the third book was a great and bittersweet conclusion to the series, though, so at least there is that. And yes, Peter is the best 🙂
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 🙂
I’m never overly positive all the time, but I feel some people on Booktube are but that’s me. I do love this tag because it shows what you really think about some books which is what I like. I definitely want to do this one 🙂 great answers!
Oh yes, please do this one, I’d love to read your answers 🙂 Thank you so much for your comment! 🙂 x
Loved reading yours answers! I also mostly prefer buying Paperbacks more than Hardbacks because yeah, they’re pretty expensive and hard to handle. I totally agree with you on insta-love! It’s my major back turn-off. I really wish this trope completely disappears from the book world. I loved the first two books in the Divergent series but I haven’t read the final book yet. I’ve heard so many mixed reviews about it and that’s why I’m still hesitant to pick it up.
I’m glad you agree! Hardbacks are so pretty, but… they’re quite expensive and just not as practical, unfortunately, haha.
I hope you will still read the end of the Divergent series, who knows, you might enjoy that ending – if you didn’t get spoiled about it already haha 🙂
Thank you so much, Raven! 🙂 x
OK I’m with you on Allegiant and so you don’t like when we say that French people are “so elegant!” LOL I’m your neighbour from Belgium so I can assure you I think you are great but don’t suffer from French fever as I’ve vacationed countless times in your beautiful country 😉
Ohhh I didn’t even know you were from Belgium, I always thought you were from England?! Hello neighbour haha and thank you for that haha 🙂
Yaay, I’m so happy you did this tag, I remember I had lots of fun back when I did it – but then again I complain & rant way more than you do.
I agree with all of these, Allegiant had such an annoying ending, I still can’t believe that happened. Also, Peter is the best love interest indeed ❤❤❤
Also, you have to read Six of Crows, so that we can buddy read Crooked Kingdom, I’m intimidated by that book because high expectations ?
Yes, Peter is the sweetest and we all need a Peter in our lives <3
OH YES that would be really amazing! I have to get it at some point, I don't know when, but I will haha 🙂
Thank you so much for your sweet comment <3 <3 <3
Haha I love this tag.
Layover sounds ew. So ew.
Cora | http://www.teapartyprincess.co.uk/
Haha I’m glad you like it – feel free to do it as well if it inspires you, I’d love to read your answers 😀
Right? It was… ew, that’s the word haha.
Thank you so much for your comment! 😀
YAY!! thanks for tagging me i’m so excited to do this tag!! Also, 100% to Allegiant…I was like WTF?! After everything we’ve been through, THIS is how you’re ending the series??
Yay I can’t wait to read your answers! 😀
Hahaha right?? I was SO… shocked.
Haha I can definitely understand why go NOPE at books set in France like that. I haven’t read any books by non-Dutch authors set in Amsterdam, except for The Fault In Our Stars, and even then I had a little ‘nope’ moment. John Green did a lot of great research and it’s obvious that he visited while writing the book, but at some point they’re at a cafe or a restaurant I believe? And the waiter tells them about these petals or something and what the locals call them and I was like?? I’ve never heard that before?? It’s been years since I read it and my copy is at home so I’m not sure what it was but I really wondered where that came from haha. I guess some local told him that?
Also DEFINITELY agree with you on John. Nothing against him, but the love triangle was so unncessary?? Not to mention how can you expect anyone to root for him when Peter is right there
Lovely post like always Marie ❤️
Ohhhh I remember that moment in the book!! Haha, I bet that wouldn’t happen in real life in Amsterdam – I guess books, are made to make us dream, that’s for sure haha 😛
RIGHT??? I mean, John was great and everything but… just, WHY WAS HE HERE EXACTLY. Peter was, like, RIGHT HERE and there was no point to fighting him or anything haha.
Thank you so much, Michelle!! <3 <3
Negative enough xD haha, I like that. I know what you mean! I feel like I only ever rate books like 4 stars 😀 I even wrote a post about that once, lol.
Agree about erotica xD nope, just not for me either. I don’t think I’ve got a nope format though 😀
By the way, any news on that Six of Crows? No sale or anything? I still want the buddy read 😀 just saw my notes the other day. Just tell me if you snag it somewhere 😀
Haha, I have never been in France, but I absolutely know what you mean about the France cliche 😀 I mean, it really can’t be like that it is in books… It’s fictional France. The season is always grape picking season xDDDD and I have never read Twilight, but I also never want to, because it’s kind of full of harmful stuff :/ especially for teens…
Oh I do that too – I don’t rate my books very low – but that just means we’re great at picking up books we love, so that’s a good sign? 🙂
I haven’t gotten a chance to buy it yet – I try to keep my book budget under control and since I got 4 books left to read… well I need to read them first haha. I’ll definitely let you know when I can get a copy, but if you want to read it before, don’t wait up for me, feel free to get to it!! <3
Yeah, twilight is definitely filled with… problematic things :/ I hope you'll find better reads haha 🙂
Thank you so much for stopping by 😀 x
ALLEGIANT IS A MAJOR NOPE.
Why did she even write that ending? It doesn’t exist for me!
I know right??? I am still in shock hahaha.
lol this list was so entertaining to read! I agree completely about allegiant, I did not enjoy the last book. I pretty much Nope all YA Fantasy because the characters are so young and annoying most of the time xD
My biggest nope was the maze runner series. The first book was okay, then it went so downhill, and the last book never resolved any of my questions. Then there was a prequel to answer all my questions but it turned out that it didn’t address any of them! I wish I could get the time I spent reading it back lol
Aw thank you, so happy you enjoyed this! If you want to do this tag as well, feel free to 😀
I have to agree with you about the maze, that series had so much potential, it makes me a bit sad 🙁
Thank you so much!! 🙂
I just might, it sounds fun! Thanks 🙂
I agree with so many of these! You are completely correct, no book will ever beat the horrible mess of an ending that was “Allegiant”. And I’m so glad I’m not the only one who hates Mare, that girl is ridiculous and is the reason I stopped reading those books. Insta-love is the trope that makes me go nope, too. MARIE GO READ SIX OF CROWS RIGHT NOW! (just give my babies a chance, they want more reader friends ).
This actually looks really fun, I think I’ll do this one 🙂
Hahaha I know, Mare is quite annoying to be honest. I heard that the books get better, but.. I don’t know if I will have the courage to get back to them someday haha.
Yes yes yes okay I will try to read it soon haha I promise 😛
YAY great!! I can’t wait to read your answers for that one! Thank you so much, Shouni 🙂
I hate insta-love so much! Romeo and Juliet is a big “Nope” for me because of it. It is ok to notice that someone’s hot on first sight, but don’t marry them that week!
I also was into Twilight at first, but that was when everyone was reading it and loved it. I reread it recently, and not only was it sexist, it was boring! It’s one of those books that are shiny at first but aren’t good for rereading.
Hahahaha yes, that’s the worst kind of insta love, I guess haha.
I have to agree with you – Twilight was great a couple years ago when I first read it, but now I just… couldn’t read it anymore, now that I realize how… wrong it is in so many ways ahah .
Thank you so much for your comment! 🙂
I love a good rant (and I especially agree with you about Mare, ugh).
Ahah so happy you liked this 😀 Mare was so annoying, unfortunately, whyyyy.
Thank you so much for stopping by! 😀
This tag was a really good one, I might do it just for fun. I totally agree about twilight. I read two or three of them when I was a teenager, and then lost interest and now looking back…. No way they would be for me ever again.
Oh yes, please do, I’d love to read your answers 😀
I have to agree, I wouldn’t be able to re-read this series now, or ever again hahaha.
Thank you so much for your comment! 😀
I’m more positive than negative. Part of that is that I think I’m smart when picking my books. I know what I like and stick to it? Of course that means I don’t go outside the box too often either. I like to think I’m not boring but maybe I am! I HATED Allegiant. I was so mad! I’m surprised I gave the author another chance after that betrayal. I think I dislike Cal more than Mare in Red Queen. She is discovering who she is and he knows. He still makes the wrong decisions. I haven’t read the most recent book and I hope he redeems himself! Nice post Marie, but you never disappoint!
I feel like I am the same way – I know what I like and I stick to it for the most part haha and whenever I venture into a whole new genre, I take recommendations from my most trusted bloggers haha 🙂
Oh yes that’s an interesting point – I just remember these books being a mess haha. Fingers crossed that the rest of the series gets a bit better for you 😀
Thank you so much, you’re too sweet! <3 <3
I feel like I’m too nice sometimes myself.
Also, I agree about the protagonist of Red Queen. I haven’t read the second one, but all the reviews are so negative I don’t have any motivation to even though I thought the first one was okay overall, but nothing special.
The only way I might pick the sequel to Red Queen up is because it’s one of the only books consistently available at my library and someday I might need something to read. . .
I guess… it’s good to be nice? We’re good people? hahaha.
I understand, to be honest, even if I read the second book and heard that it gets better, I don’t know if I’ll have the courage to continue anyway. There are so many other books to read 🙂
If you ever want to pick up the sequels yourself, though, I’d love to hear your thoughts on them 😀 x
Thank you so much for your comment! 🙂
True 🙂
Thanks, if I pick them up I’ll do that.
You’re welcome! 🙂
I agree about Allegiant. Ugh I really don’t like Mare either. Yuck- stepsiblings?! I’m with you on that. And I loved the twist in We Were Liars too and didn’t see it coming. I really don’t like instalove. I so agree about deaths in serpent king and 180 seconds too. Great answers!
I know right? I don’t know, at first the book seemed like a lot of fun, but this step-siblings attraction just, ew, wasn’t really my cup of tea hahaha.
Thank you so much!! 😀
Yeah I can see why!!!
You’re welcome!
I also feel like I’m a little too positive when it comes to books! I think it’s because I don’t really DNF books and honestly, there are hardly any books I read and don’t like. It’s weird, but actually so true. I don’t know how it happens that way. ?
Ahh yes, The Fault in Our Stars tore me apart. I just finished it, and I KNEW that the character was going to die, but I still cried when it happened. I also just read They Both Die at the End…and obviously the title gives away what happens, but did that stop it from crushing my heart? No.
Great post, Marie!
I AM NOT ALONE AHHHH. This makes me so happy haha thank you Olivia! I don’t know why, but I also tend to be generous with my ratings, because… I pick up books I love and can’t remember the last time I didn’t?! It was a little while ago. Seriously, I’m glad we have that particular skill haha 🙂
I really need to read They Both Die – it sounds like such a powerful read and loads of blogging friends have said tons of great things about this book. I’m just… not sure if I’m ready to be destroyed by feelings yet hahaha.
Thank you so much!! 🙂 x
OMG THE PLOT TWIST IN WE WERE LIARS AND THE LONELIEST GIRL OMG!! I didn’t see either of them coming but I definitely liked The Loneliest Girl one!!!! And Queen Levana is so terrifying omg. The Allegiant ending is the worst but also at least it wasn’t predictable?? I definitely agree with you about the book community being negative in some ways. I mean, I enjoy writing angry, rangy reviews but wouldn’t it be nice if we could prioritise finishing the books we actually like and not just read things to hate on them? I think it’s good to enjoy the books you read– it means you have good taste.
ME TOO I LOVED IT. I didn’t expect it at all, in the loneliest girl, I thought it would be.. I don’t know what, but NOT THAT. I was like, terrified and couldn’t stop reading. What an incredible book.
YES you’re so right about that. I was shocked by Allegiant’s ending, but it wasn’t predictable, AT ALL hahaha.
You’re making a great point here – I enjoy reading bookish rants, too, but… I also love positivity a whole lot and wish there were more of it overall 🙂
Thank you so much, Shar! 🙂 x
I hope you do end up reading Six of Crows! It’s my absolute favourite! (and I can be annoying about it!?)
I LOVE John but I felt the story could have been wrapped up in the first one. I didn’t really like the second book, whereas I ADORED the first one. ?
I will definitely read it at some point this year, everyone is telling me to and everyone is loving it haha. I can’t wait 🙂
I have to agree with you here, the story didn’t really need to have sequels, but… the characters were adorable so, I couldn’t be too mad about that haha 🙂
Thank you so much for your comment! 🙂
Am I the only one who liked Allegiants ending???
Oh I also prefer paperbacks! Though I do love the look of hardbacks, they’re so much more expensive in Australia and they’re painful to read with a chronic illness.
I only ever buy them if that’s the only option, if it’s not a novel and more a non-fiction book like Rejected Princesses, it’s a special edition of a fave or, it’s the same price or not that different from the paperback and isn’t huge or it’s just too beautiful not to!
Oh no I’m sure you’re not the only one, don’t worry!! I was a bit… well, completely shocked about that ending to be honest haha.
YAY! I’m glad you are a paperback lover as well – they’re just more practical, less heavy to carry around as well. I only keep hardbacks for special editions and books I really love ahah 🙂 x
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 🙂
I’ve not come across anyone yet you liked the ending ? I just thought it was pretty true to the character I suppose and I prefer realistic endings, unless we’re talking about endings for minorities and then I want all the happy endings ?
All the yes! Paperbacks are just a lot more convenient whereas hardbacks are really for the visual only.
No worries! ☺️
Yeah, I guess you are right on that, we certainly got a realistic ending. I just. I didn’t expect that at all hahaha.
I don’t think i’ve read many books set in France, but if i go by what my friend told me (who is French and used to work in Paris), it’s probably more like: everyone walks around with baguettes, drinks wine for lunch and will rudely push you out the way at any given time. 😀
Hahahaha, well now that is a pretty accurate picture of us 😛
Haha nice post. I totally enjoyed your answers 😀 But yes, I haven’t read most of these books 😛
I totally agree with you on Fifty Shades 😀 I haven’t read it but have seen the first movie. Yes, I agree, why do that series even exist? Seriously, I have no idea 😀
Well, between paperback and hardcover I would choose hardcover because they look more beautiful? 😛 But, they are always double the price so they are hard to purchase. But yes if there is only a little difference in price then I would go for the hardcover. But the main thing is, whichever is more prettier, I buy that one 😀
Aw thank you, so happy you enjoyed it! If you’re feeling inspired to do this tag as well, feel free to, I’d love to read your answers 🙂
Ahahah I get it, hardcovers really are beautiful and I love getting them as well, but… I tend to turn towards paperbacks more and more – they’re just more practical, since I always have to carry around my books everywhere haha 🙂
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 😀
I find I definitely have a hard time being honest about how much I absolutely hated a classic. Because if the entire world thinks its good but me, I have to be wrong, right? But then I think maybe people get on this bandwagon where they see everyone else saying it’s good and don’t want to admit that they didn’t get it, or think they are stupid for not coming out with the same reaction to the book. Most classics for me just feel like normal everyday novels, but I guess most were revolutionary in their time. And then adults tell me “oh, you just aren’t ready for them yet” and I’m like – well if I’m not ready, why are you forcing me to read it right now???
Oh I get your feeling about this – I find it so hard to admit that I didn’t enjoy a book when it’s a highly popular book and… I feel like I should be wrong and I should have enjoyed the book more?! Then, I guess we can’t all be blown away by some books and it’s okay to admit it – there has to be people in the world feeling the same way as we do, somewhere, haha 🙂
Thank you so much for your comment! 🙂 x
I just finished reading this series where all these people were convinced into believe aliens were going to save them, destroy the rest of the word (because it’s evil) and then come pick up the Chosen from Earth. The whole point of it is to point out things that we are being told might not be right and to be careful what we believe and when thinking about classics now, I’m just like, “Man, is it a trick?” Lol. Does make you think about things though…
Ahahah well I have to admit, it does make me think as well haha 🙂
Great answers for this tag Marie! 😀 I definitely agree with you on the ending for Allegiant, god that was horrible. For me the only book that comes close in terms of bad endings is The Death Cure (I could rant for hours about that book so I won’t go into it now), and yeah I’m not a fan of Mare from the Red Queen series or insta-love either. Along with love triangles that’s one of my main no-go tropes.
I really loved A.G. Howard’s Splintered series when I first read it, but I didn’t like Roseblood at all so yeah she’s probably a no-go author for me now too (which is kind of a shame because I love retellings and fairytale inspired stories and the covers for her books are so pretty!)
Again great answers for this tag, I really loved reading your post. 🙂 <3
Oh yes, I can’t believe I didn’t think of The DeathCure while writing this post. This series was just so promising but… WHYYYY. I am a bit mad about it haha.
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment, Beth 😀
When it comes to bad endings The Death Cure and Allegiant are always my go-to picks.
That’s all right. 😀
Ugh, don’t even get me started on Allegiant. I was in a reading slump recently and for now I’m making my way veeery slowly but surely down my TBR. That said, the books I have gone NOPE NOPE NOPE have been few and far between. There are more meh books than anything, and their reviews are harder to write, so sometimes I don’t even bother. I can be mean sometimes and enjoy writing negative reviews when the book has truly made me MAD, but that doesn’t happen often.
I don’t remember my last NOPE book, but I can tell you the one I feel most strongly about. Tearfall by Lauren Kate. I was so mad at that book. I can’t even. Ridiculous protagonist, instalove, instacraziness…
Oh I get your feeling – I feel like, looking at my books, there are more “meh” books than books where I just want to say “NOPE” and throw them out the window. In a way, that’s good, it means we’re not hating on too many books? hahaha.
Oh that’s good to know haha, I’ll definitely have to stay away from that one! Thank you so much, Pam!! <3 <3
You are too cute about France Marie! Not that I blame you… I feel similarly when people set a book in Texas, lol. Totally agree about Red Queen And Queen Levana. And no to insta-love! <3
Haha, I can’t imagine the clichés you get about Texas… oh wait, I think I can haha. It’s always a bit annoying.
Thank you so much, Dani 🙂 x
Thanks for tagging me Marie, this is definitely my kind of tag and I can’t wait to read it! 😀 I totally agree with Allegiant, insta-love, and erotica. Divergent series went downhill for me, but Allegiant really took the cake. I also hate insta love and will never go near erotica genre… I have a long list of characters death for the death prompts though, all of them scarred me it’s going to be the hardest prompts for me to pick…
Oh you’re so welcome, I can’t wait to read your answers for that one 😀
Hahaha oh I get that, there are so many terrible characters’ deaths, it’s so hard to pick just a few. Why are so many books heartbreaking hahaha.
Thank you so much 😀
I hate insta-love, I`m so glad you`ve mentioned it. I dislike it when it happens in contemporary, but with fantasy, it`s even more ridiculous. You`re life`s at stake, and all you can think of is the stranger you met 5 seconds ago? Nope. I also read “Twilight” when I was young, and it was OK back then, but now I`d hate it. That said, I would choose it over “50 Shades of Abuse”.
Oh I’m so glad you feel the same way, it does feel quite ridiculous hahaha. I’m glad that at least, it doesn’t happen in every single book haha 🙂
Oh yes, choosing between Twilight and 50 shades would be a strugle, but I’d go with Twilight I think haha.
Thank you for your sweet comment! 🙂 x
I really hope that you don’t feel like I am pushing Red Rising on you, because despite me loving it, I think I have mentioned on numerous occasions that I don’t actually think you’d like it haha
Ahahah oh no, it’s not you at all, it’s seeing it everywhere that makes me feel like I should be reading it. I’m grateful for your guidance haha you always know what I could love and what really wouldn’t be for me, so I always follow your advice haha 😛 x
Hahaha good! I am glad!!
I haven’t written a rant-y review…ever, now that I think about it. I did write a rant-y small paragraph reviewing a book once, so maybe that counts? I’ve been lucky in that I have genuinely liked most of the books I’ve read recently.
I think that’s fantastic! Ranting about books and reading others’ rants can be entertaining, but it’s much, much better when we just read books we love haha 🙂
thank you so much for your sweet comment, Anna 🙂
Your first question really resonated with me haha! I feel like I don’t post enough negative rants reviews either. Maybe I’m good at finding books I like? Maybe I am not really picky when it comes to books? But I think other people can relate more to dislikes than likes. If that made sense.
The ending of Allegiant is SO BAD. Why did it have to happen?? And John is like the most irrelevant love interest ever. There was really no competition because Peter was the clear winner, and John was just pretty bleh.
Yeah I feel exactly the same way, so glad I am not alone! I feel like I’ve been really lucky when picking my books and…I think in a way, that’s great, we aren’t complaining that much this way haha 🙂
Right? I don’t even know why John was here. Nothing against him, he seemed like a decent love interest, but… there was just no point in him being here haha there was no competition. Peter always haha 🙂
Thank you so much for your comment!! <3
Ahahaha I feel you on Allegiant, though I loved the book I was not a fan of the ending. At all. I just felt so damn bad for Tobias 😛 And also, We Were Liars, DID NOT SEE THAT COMING holy shit. I thought it made the book very interesting but it also made me go “whaaaat”
RIGHT? I felt so, SO bad for poor Tobias here haha. And We Were Liars was brilliant – I love it when some books make me go like, WTF hahaha. 🙂
Thank you so much for stopping by! 😀
Ahaha me too! My pleasure Marie <3
The way you feel about books set in France is the exact same way I feel about books set in Britain that obviously haven’t been written by British authors. The whole “ultra-polite hot British guy who calls every girl ‘love’ or ‘darling'” thing is one that gets on my nerves because it’s such a rare thing ? And I very rarely will touch erotica, yuck.
Ahahha oh I wish they were all like that, wouldn’t it be great 😛 I guess that books are made for us to dream, but I just hate it when it’s so unrealistic, too. Sets our expectations for real life way too high haha.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Louise 🙂
I don’t think I can ever forgive or forget all that happened in Allegiant. Beyond the death, I just thought that the book took a completely different direction from the other two and it felt like I was reading a different series most of the time. Ugh, it makes me so angry just to think about it.
I definitely agree with you about Queen Levana. She is not someone I’d like to cross.
I have to agree with you here, somehow it felt so different from the rest of the series, that was really… strange? and a bit frustrating as well haha.
Thank you so much, Lois! 🙂 x
OMG HAHAHA OKAY OKAY THIS TAG IS LIKE SO FUN TO READ FROM YOU!! <3 I'd love to do this HAHA and the nope about Lara JEAN CAN IGET AN AMENNNNN.
OH YES PLEASE DO THIS TAG. I would LOVE to read your answers, I’m sure it would be amazing hahaha.
Thank you!!! 🙂
I AGREE WITH A LOT OF YOUR ANSWERS. I couldn’t even get to the next Red Queen book because I hated Mare so much. I kind of feel the same way about Red Rising, too. I mean, I want to *try* it, but I have this feeling that I won’t like it??? And the TFIOS death. I will forever be a non-fan of John Green, but that death KILLED ME. T_T The only answer I’d have to disagree with is Twilight–I mean, it’s definitely not an amazing book, but I somehow feel like the YA world wouldn’t be what it is now if not for Twilight. xD 50 Shades, though, you may burn. BURN UNTIL THERE’S NOTHING LEFT OF IT MUAHAHA.
Also thank you for the tag. Heh. :>
– Aimee @ Aimee, Always
Oh I’m so glad you feel the same way about Red Rising – everyone is loving this series so much, but… I don’t think it’d be for me :/
Oh you’re right about that – I know I read twilight when I was younger and at the time, enjoyed it, and I agree that it kind of started a whole thing, too 🙂
You’re so welcome, I can’t wait to read your answers!! Thank you so much! <3
Yes. So agree with 50 shades of grey .. I so DON’T wanna touch it (I saw movies cuz eeeh .. mom wanted to and, I was in the room xD minding my business) specially now that I know it’s not a fair representation of BDSM and rather abuse. BUT! I work in a sexshop you see… and the most awkward thing is probably how some things are “linking” with that movie… and how when the last movie came out we were to be expecting a raise of selling thoses items .. sigh.
the struggles with hardcovers are real !! I have tiny hands ..and wanna read on my back with book in the air xD see my problem ? so heavy .. and damn dust jacket coming in my way bconfklm, yet I don’t wanna remove it because of.. reasons ;-; I mostly get mad at it xD
Oh no I’m sorry you had to saw the movie, even if it was because you just happened to pass by hahaha that’s annoying :/ Yeah I get it though, these kind of movies have to… well, make some kind of sales raise, somehow? haha. It’s sad though :/
HAHAHA I completely see your problem, I am struggling with hardbacks for that as well – we just can’t hold them that way, they’re way too heavy hahaha.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 🙂 x
Actually… film isnt as cringy but just… when you know its so NOT okay, it changes the whole game. She would had liked me to go see it with her in cinema but eeeh nope! Im so not paying for that movie. Sorry mom..
I just bought one infact.. we will see how reading will goes ahah I foreshadow some swearing involved ?
Hahaha, I get it, I wouldn’t pay to see that movie either haha.
Hahahaha, well good luck with that, I hope your arms won’t hurt too much from holding the book haha <3
Hello Marie!
I think there is nothing wrong with being positive or negative as long as we are being ourselves. I found that when I write a positive review, there are people who comment that they love the book, and when I write a negative book, there are people who commiserate with me. So either works 🙂
I can really relate to a lot of things you’ve mentioned in this post! First off – yes I really could not stand Twilight or 50 Shades! They were just… bad! I also prefer paperbacks to hardcovers because they are cheaper and more portable. However hardcovers tend to be very pretty so I have several books in this format as well. I also can’t think of a plot twist that I dislike. If a plot point is twisty enough to be called a plot twist, I’d say bring it on 🙂
You’re right about that – as long as we are true to who we are, I guess that’s what matters the most 🙂
I get it, hardcovers are really pretty and, when I can’t resist, I know I will get an hardcover of a book I know I will love, or from a favorite author. They’re just sooooo pretty on our shelves haha 🙂
Thank you so much, Sophie! 🙂
Oh, this is a fun tag! And I agree with a lot of them – reading paperbacks over hardbacks, the death in 180 Seconds being super emotional, not wanting to cross Queen Levana, finding Splintered weird…
I wholeheartedly agree with the notion that Fifty Shades of Grey should not exist, but I started reading because of Twilight, so I can’t wish that one out of existence. :o)
Oh I’m so glad you and I have loads in common! 😀 And if you enjoyed this tag, feel free to do it as well, I would love to read your answers 🙂
Haha oh, I get that. I didn’t start reading because of Twilight, but it did play a role in my early teens and made me read more, too, so… I can’t ignore that fact too much either haha 🙂
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3
Sometimes it’s good to just go NOPE on a book. Or anything really 🙂 If it’s not for us, why spend time on it?
I’m actually happy to hear you’re not interested in Red Rising. I’ve been pushing myself to read it for half a year now and I am just not interested in continuing but everybody’s raving and raving about it so I just keep telling myself to read a bit more… And maybe I should give it another chance. Or maybe I should just say nope 🙂
Also, yes, the ending of Allegiant sucked and ruined the entire series for me.
Agree! I guess we can’t love everything and, if it’s not our thing, we shouldn’t lose our time 🙂
Oh I’m glad I’m not alone here! To be honest, Red Rising has been recommended to me SO MANY TIMES, yet I know deep down that it wouldn’t be a book for me. Despite the pressure, I resist haha 🙂
I’m still … well, shocked about the end of Allegiant. WHY haha.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 🙂 x
I don’t think I’ll ever get over the death in The Serpent King. IT WAS SO SAD *cries*
I’m still not over it, I will never be. WHY did this have to happen?? 🙁
Thank you for stopping by, Lia <3 <3
Of course <3
Ugh, I can’t stand insta love either. Hehehe, I have to disagree with some of your things here. I, for one, loved Twilight when I was younger and re-read it last year and still loved it! I can see how it is problematic but well, my love cannot be denied xD And I liked the ending of Allegiant? I liked that the author was so daring 😛 However, I do agree about Queen Levana literally being the most terrifying being ever and the unpredictable ending of We Were Liars being pretty great.
Ahah well I think it’s so great that you still love it – it’s amazing to love the same books as much as you did when you were younger, I love when that happens 🙂
The ending of Allegiant was crazy, that’s for sure and I can’t believe the author went that way, haha – I’m glad you like it, though! I’m still in denial about it all haha 🙂
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3 <3
Allegiant, that really was the worst. Because the whole book was a mess, not just “the thing”. I am the opposite on We Were Liars- I DID predict the twist and I didnt like it hahah. Oops? But I am with you on Loneliest Girl! And definitely agree with Serpent King and TFIOS, which makes me want to read 180 Seconds too! Also, YES I feel like I am too positive sometimes! Like I have some mini-reviews coming up and I pretty much liked them all, but I feel like I am being fake or something- even though I am NOT (and have plenty of negative reviews to back me up hah) but it just feels weird when they all come up at once!
Agree, it really makes me sad :/
YOU PREDICTED IT? HOW?? I get that you were disappointed though, if you saw the whole thing coming, I think I would have felt differently about the book if I knew what would happen, too :/
YAY! I hope you’ll want to try 180 seconds, it is such a lovely book 🙂
I so get the feeling – I feel like I am often too positive, but… I’m just really enjoying the books I read?
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Shannon! 🙂
I loved Twilight. But I didn’t like the Vampire Academy books. I decided not to read Bloodlines. I think some of the spin-offs of Beautiful Creatures shouldn’t exist.
I didn’t even know Beautiful Creatures had spin-offs?? I only read the Beautiful Creatures series, a whiiiiiiile ago, I don’t think I can even remember it now haha. 🙂
Thank you so much for stopping by 😀
