Hello everyone! How are you all doing? It’s been a while… I’m so sorry about that! I’ve been busy with life I guess.
This April, I enjoyed some well deserved holidays. I went up North to see my sister with my family and then we traveled to freaking London town!! My favorite city ever with my favorite person ever and we saw our favorite band ever. It was magical, there is no other word. I’m back on the blog today to talk about how my reading habits have changed these last few years. I’ve grown up, that’s for sure but has my reading style changed all that much? Do I still like the same genres? The same authors? Do I read more or less? I took a step back and here’s what I can say.

2013 – 2023 : how my reading has changed!

☔️ I read more contemporary stories than fantasy.
I used to be a huge fantasy fan. Harry Potter, Eragon, Narnia, The Hunger Games, Twilight. I’m not so much anymore. I don’t really have an explanation and I still really enjoy some fantasy books once in a while but I’m much more of a contemporary gal right now.
☔️ I still read more paper books than ebooks.
I like paper, sue me! There is something you don’t have with e-books, the fact that you can feel the pages under your fingers, to actually see where you’re at, the fact you can put it on your shelves. But ebooks are awesome and when I’m traveling, I’m definitely packing my e-reader.

☔️ I read less than I used to.
I read one book every two week and then one per week and now I’m back to one book every two week even three sometimes. I’m working full-time and I’m also really into tv shows so yeah I read less. But I don’t put any pressure on myself to read more. I read when I want to.
☔️ If it’s a series, I’ll think about it twice before buying it.
Ten books in a series? Uh, no thank you! I don’t want to commit to that many books. Plus I never DNF books so if I start I gotta finish. I would rather buy ten different books. But if I know I’m going to enjoy that series and it’s not ten but three novels, maybe I’ll cave!

☔️ I look out more for adult books than YA ones.
I’m older. Yeah…big shock I know! So of course I’m more looking for adult books than YA ones. They represent more where I’m at in life. The characters are older and the themes different. I still enjoy YA books though!
☔️ I understand my reading taste better.
I like reading what I like reading, deal with it. Maybe I used to be a bit self conscious about what I like to read but I’m not anymore. I know exactly what kind of books I’m going to enjoy. If people are hyping up a book I know I’m not going to like, I’m just not reading it. It’s that simple.

☔️ If it’s a hardcover, I may not purchase it. Give me all the paperbacks!
Hardcovers are heavy and sometimes not really practical to read. I want all my books to be paperbacks. They are cheaper and easy to carry with you. And if I have to wait a while for the book to come out in that format, then so be it!
☔️ I’ve become more critical.
When the characters don’t feel real enough or when the world building is just meh… I will wince. I’m more critical than I used to be and it’s understandable because I’ve read a lot of books. Some good and some that aren’t up to my standards. If it’s only a three-star rate on Goodreads, so be it.

☔️ I don’t do the Goodreads challenge anymore.
Maybe it’s because I read less and I can’t put 50 books on my challenge anymore so I lose every time (ugh, I hate losing!) but yeah I’m not really into the Goodreads challenge anymore. Reading should be fun, I don’t feel like forcing myself to binge books for the sake of a challenge.

☔️ I’m still always reading a book. A reading break? Don’t know that.
I never put reading on hold, I am always reading something. Maybe I’m reading a book really slowly but I’m reading it. I need to know I can escape into a book any time I feel like it. There are so many books out there I want to read, I have no time for a break.

Thank you! ☺️☺️
I posted a blog about this just last week – we must be in sync!
Awesome!! Yes, we must be 😎
Thanks for stopping by 😘😘
Oh my gosh. This is so relatable! I love fantasy still but I mainly read contemporary. It takes a lot for me to pick up a fantasy, especially if it’s a series! Series is another one. Im reading a series for the first time in AGES! It’s really good and I’m glad, but I was definitely on the fence 🤣 loved this post! I love these kinds of discussions
I’m so glad I’m not the only one! 🙈🙈
Thank you so so much, I’m glad you liked it!
Talk soon and happy reading 😘😘
I loved reading this! Some of the ways you read are very similar to mine. I’m with you on not DNFing I like sticking around to the end, same as constantly reading. I’m always reading something no matter what. I think that helps especially when I feel slumpy.
I also laughed at waiting for a paperback to come out because ME TOO! I’m always waiting for something to come to paperback… I’m still waiting on a few as I type this!
That makes me so happy, thank you! 😊
Yeeees! I’m glad I’m not the only one!
😂😂 Forever waiting, yeees!
Thank you so much for stopping by, happy reading 😘😘
This was amazing post. I will also write it on my 10 years of blogging and reading and it I think i would still be reading more series and love physical books more than e-books. Break from reading isn’t something I can imagine as well, it’s a ritual now.
Thank you so much! 🥰
Awesome, can’t wait to check it out!
Yeees, can’t live without reading 😁
Thanks for stopping by 😘😘
It’s interesting to see how your reading habits have changed as you’ve aged, Marie! Work sure has changed how much I’m able to read these days too, although it makes you appreciate whatever time you do have to spend with a book 💕
Thank you! 😊
100% agree with you on that one! ❤️
Thanks for stopping by, happy reading 😘😘
Omg!! I’m sorry Nyx!! I just realized it was one of your blog posts, not Marie 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
No worries! 😊❤️
This is such an interesting post! I love to hear how the reading of other readers changed over the years. I recently got asked that question for a Q&A and while I answered it I realized how much my own reading has changed. *lol* Great blog post! =)
Thank you! ☺️
I’m so happy you enjoyed it! 😊
I remember the first time I saw the Jonas Brothers. It was about 20 years ago. They were the opener for the opener of the Cheetah Girls show I brought my daughter to. They handed out sampler CDs in the lobby, and my daughter became an instant fan. Love the pictures. Looks like you had an incredible time. Moving on from my blast from the past…We have so many changes in common. I was reading a lot more SFF when I came back to reading. It was mostly because I was reading my daughter’s books, but I liked them too. I am pretty much back to contemporary full-time. I used to read a LOT more YA books. If I read 5 a year, that’s a lot. I feel the same way about series too.
Wow, 20 years ago! It’s crazy how time flies!
I really did, thank you! 😊
Yaaay, we have so many changes in common!
Thank you so much for stopping by and happy reading 😘😘
Ah I loved this post Nyx! My reading has definitely evolved through the years, I know roughly the books I’ll enjoy and which ones I won’t. If a hyped book doesn’t spark my interest than I’m unlikely to add it to my tbr, there’s simply too many other books out there which do align with my tastes. I gravitate towards urban fantasy a lot, have done since I was younger and that’s definitely not changed. If there’s vampires, witches, werewolves or anything of the sort then I’m more than likely going to enjoy the book/series.
I can definitely see it evolving some more, probably with me leaning more towards the Adult genre and only periodically dipping back into YA. I will always love YA but New Adult/Adult books are where I’m seeing myself represented in terms of where they’re at in life.
That makes me so happy, thank you! 🥰
YEEES! Why pick up a book we know we won’t enjoy?!
Yeees totally! That’s exactly how I feel!
Thank you so much for stopping by, happy reading 😘😘
I’m sort of writing a blog post around this or maybe I wrote one a while ago too, lol. My reading has decreased majorly because I didn’t have many friends or other hobbies and lots of free time but now the situation is reversed but I don’t mind that at all. I was a huge library and paperback gal, which I technically still am, it’s just ebooks and audiobooks can be convenient for when I’m walking to classes or secretly reading in a very boring class, haha.
I used to be a huge fantasy and dystopia person as well and then I went through a huge YA contemporary phase but I’m slowly finding my way back to fantasy and sci-fi in the past year or so and I think it will always be my comfort zone <3
I really liked reading this post, I think it's always fun for us to reflect on how our reading habits have changed over time 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing, it’s so interesting to see how our reading habits have changed over time! 😊
Happy reading! 😘😘😘
