Hello everyone! Hello 2021! Happy New Year to you all!! I hope this year will be full of joy, books and adventures. Please 2021… be awesome? We’re counting on you!
For my first 2021 post, I decided to talk about reading challenges, more precisely the Goodreads one. It’s that time of the year when lots of readers set a goal for their annual reading. I used to do it, I don’t anymore. Here’s why.
What is the Goodreads challenge?
Every January readers set a goal of how many books they want to read that year. The Goodreads website will help them keep track of it.
At first glance, it seems like a really cool idea! It’s a great way to challenge yourself, it helps you keep track of your progress and it can even motivate you to read more to meet your goal. I have done it a few years and I think (to be honest I don’t remember it properly) that I’ve met my goal every single year. So why did I quit?

Why I don’t do the Goodreads challenge anymore
🌪 I don’t like the competition: it’s too much pressure
While scrolling through Goodreads, I saw that a lot of readers went through 85, 100 or even 125 books in 2020 and I was both in awe and confused. How can they read so many books in one year? I want to know their secret. Don’t they have jobs all day? Did they really read all pages or did they skipped right to the end? Did they even enjoy the books they’ve read or did they just go through them like going through a pack of crisps in front of the TV without even tasting any of it?
Seeing those gigantic numbers, it was very easy to feel pressured. How can I compare to them? I don’t have time to read that many books, I have full-time job, I have errands to run, cooking and cleaning to do. I also love to watch TV and go for walks and see family and friends. I can’t read 100 books in a year, I just can’t and seeing others do it… it’s easy to feel like a failure.

I’m competitive, even with myself so if I’m to set a goal I want to succeed. I’ll just feel like crap if I don’t and I don’t want to feel like crap about reading books! Setting a goal on paper or on the Goodreads website in that case, for everyone to see, there’s a certain degree of obligation and pressure that goes along with it.
I feel like reading shouldn’t be a competition with others or with yourself. We set so many goals in our day-to-day lives. We don’t need more of that – especially with reading.
🌪 I don’t want reading to become a chore
Reading books just for the sake of finishing the Goodreads reading challenge? It does feel a lot like a chore, and reading should not be. Seeing you’re late in your challenge, you start to pick shorter books so you can finish them faster and add it to your read pile. I do not call that enjoying books.

I want to learn something from my reading, I want the books to make me feel something, I really don’t want to go through them like a robot, turning the pages without taking anything in. If you’re reading just to finish a book, you run the risk of missing out on the art of the story and the characters’ essence. It’s not a pleasure anymore and you’re forbidding yourself to do other stuff too.
What if you want to try writing? What if your friends want to go out and you’re just like “no I can’t I’ve got 3 more books to read to get back on track”. Doesn’t that sound lame as hell?
Everyone should read at their own comfortable pace. If it’s fast, if it’s slow, if it’s everyday, if it’s once a month, if it’s short books, if it’s longer ones, if it’s romance, if it’s fantasy, who cares?
So I did it: I stop doing the Goodreads challenge and got back to the business of loving books.

What about you? Are you into reading challenges?
Do you ever feel pressured to join? Or is it a great motivation tool?

I stopped taking it seriously a few years ago, pretty much for the same reasons you’ve given. Oh the stress I put on myself. I also found I was reading an awful lot of low-page-count slush in the last few months of the year in order to get my numbers up.
Over the last few years, I’ve set an arbitrary number (last year it was 20, down from a previous high of 100), and I didnt get even half way to that. Something I’ve also noticed: Quantity does not mean quality, and some of my “issues” have come from the fact that I’ve been reading trashy fluff for so long, I now find the “proper” books harder to get through, and quite honestly, it’s embarrasing
Yeees, it had become a chore when it should just be fun!
I totally get that!
Thank you so so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts 😘😘
I’ve been doing the reading challenge ever since I joined GR but I don’t pressure myself. In the first 3 years I did but last year I only aimed to read 42 books and this year I went for 45. I know I’ll reach the goal maybe even in August and I’m fine with not upping my challenge again. It’s nice to finish it, but there is no pressure anymore. =) And *lol* I have no idea how some people read 150 or more books… I’ve a kid and family, I work and have to keep my flat tidy, etc. Between all that it’s really impossible to read so many books. XD
Good for you!! I think that’s how everyone should do it, no pressure just fun 😊
Haha, same here! I just don’t know how they do it 😅
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on the topic 😘😘
I set a number, but that’s really all it is, just a number. At most times during the year, I don’t even know where I’m at with the challenge. I don’t look at it as competition, either; I’m not really too concerned with how much other people are reading. Everyone’s reading habits are different, but any reading is good reading!
Good for you!! 😊
I totally agree!
Thank you so much for stopping by 😘😘
Great post, Nyx! I’ve thought about not doing the Goodreads challenge. I think the pressure of it can get to me sometimes. Like last year I almost didn’t complete the challenge and I was so bummed about it. Luckily I was able to (but only by 1 book) and that still kind of bummed me out. Felt like I couldn’t win with it even when I completed it. Sometimes reading does feel like a chore, which totally sucks! It should be fun.
Thank you so much, glad you liked it ☺️
Yeees, that’s exactly it!! Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on the subject 😊
My secret to reading 100+ books a year is to count the picture books I read with my niece. I’m not competitive, so I set my Goodreads goal really low and then just use it to track how much I read every year.
Haha, that’s really smart! 😁
That’s perfect! Now I only use Goodreads to track how much I read every year without setting a goal 😊
Thank you so much for stopping by, happy reading 😘😘
It sounds like the problem is that you’re taking it too seriously and you’re comparing yourself to other people. It’s just a silly challenge. You’ve taken it to the extreme. And you’re also being a bit snarky (probably because of your own feelings of inadequacy) saying “Don’t these people have jobs?” You have no idea what somebody else’s situation is. Someone could have a job where they are free to listen to audiobooks as they work. They could be disabled and unable to work. But there’s no reason to imply they are shirking other responsibilities or not as hardworking as you, just because they read more books.
I think maybe you should take some time to reflect on why you’re so competitive. Just because other people read 100 books, it doesn’t mean you have to. And why do you think you do?
There’s a reason you’re able to set your own goal. Because everyone is different and has their own routine and reading rhythm.
You’re assuming a lot here-like that people aren’t “reading right”-your whole analogy of flying through a book like a bag of chips, without savoring any of it.
You’re assuming other people have the life that you do. If you have a job that allows you to listen to audiobooks, you could easily make that goal. Likewise if you are disabled and can not work or leave the house often. Stop assuming you know what reading 100 books looks like for other people. And stop being so competitive. It obviously isn’t good for you. At the very least, don’t turn your own feelings of inadequacy into judgement and snark aimed at other people.
There is absolutely NO judgement in my post about anyone. I’m really sorry if you felt that way.
I can’t read 100 books per year and I realized that it’s totally fine, that’s my life. If people can read 100, 200 or even 500, that’s absolutely fine too. And that’s exactly why I finished my post by “Everyone should read at their own comfortable pace. If it’s fast, if it’s slow, if it’s everyday, if it’s once a month, if it’s short books, if it’s longer ones, if it’s romance, if it’s fantasy, who cares?”.
This post is about MY OWN experience with reading challenges. That’s all.
Happy New Year!
I can totally see why you wouldn’t join the challenge if it makes you enjoy the reading less! Reding should be fun and indeed not turn into a chore!
I do fill in a number, but I really do not feel the pressure to reach it, nor do I look at other peoples challenges! I guess that really helps haha!

Happy New Year!! ✨
Yeeees totally, thank you 😊
Good for you!! Happy reading 😘😘
I didn’t do the Goodreads challenge last year for more or less the same reasons as you. Then our lives got so unpredictable with the pandemic and lockdowns…
Yeah…you’re right about that 😕 Here’s to another year of hopefully really great books 😊
Thank you so so much for stopping by 😘😘
I totally agree with you!! I don’t really see a point in setting yourself a goal on how many books to read in a year. I saw so many people setting their goal on 100 which is mind-blowing. I think if you want to set yourself goals on books, it should be more general like ‘I want to read more diverse books’ or ‘I want to read more non-fiction books.’ That way, you’re still motivated to explore new books but don’t feel pressured to reach a certain number. Great post! x
YEEES, exactly!!! That’s exactly how I feel!
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, happy reading 😘😘
I totally get this. I think I’ve done the Goodreads Reading Challenge every year since I joined GR but I failed one year and it still irks me to this day. One thing I’ve learned though is on average on reading between 20-40 books in a year, like that’s my average because I just don’t have the energy to read every day. I’m not always in the mood to read and like you said, I don’t want to feel pressured to read just to complete the goal. I’m using Storygraph this year rather than Goodreads and have set a yearly reading goal but it’s at 37, which if we were to compare it to the book community. It’s really low but I’ve never read 100 books in a year. I think the most I got was 76 or something and that was when I had a lot of time on my hands due to just finishing school so I could just read the books.
I try and set my goal low, last year it was at 25 and this year I figured why not set it to 37 it’s do-able but I always make sure I’m reading books I enjoy. I don’t force myself to read and if I have to lower the goal, then so be it. I just really like setting goals and making progress towards them so I don’t think I could ever give it up xD
I think that’s the best way to go about it, know yourself and what’s achievable, and just don’t stress out too much about it! 💞
Haha I totally get the setting up goals things! It’s really hard to give it up 😅
Thank you so so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, happy reading!! 😘😘
i think personally i don’t take the goodreads too seriously bc i’m quite a casual reader since i have other commitments. i just fill in my goal every year bc i’m already using it to keep track of what i read so why not HAHAHA. my goal has been the same every year (50 books) bc i know it’s something i’m able to achieve so yeah, i don’t exactly ‘challenge’ myself haha and it feels good if i manage to exceed my goal. great post btw!! 💗
That’s great, good for you!!! 😁😁
Thank you, I’m so happy you enjoyed it 😘
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! This is my very first year on Goodreads and I am doing the challenge, so we’ll see how much I like it. I read 100+ books a year because I am a very fast reader who tends to prioritize books (sometimes over other, more important things, unfortunately) and so my goal of 100 is certainly attainable. I actually set it lower than I know I *could* go because I want to focus on reading good books, nonfiction, etc. more than I focus on “how much can I possibly consume.”
And I agree, there is way too much judgment/competition!! I have tons of respect for people who read 10 books a year, or 2, or whatever. You do *not* have to be as insane as me xD I love it when people love books. That’s it. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow, how many or how few. It’s just that you love reading. So if the comparison aspect is just too much, I am 100% in support of not doing the challenge.
Best of luck to you no matter how many books you read, and I hope people will read this post and learn from your example!
Aww, you’re welcome! ☺️
That’s awesome!! Good for you!! I bet you’ll make it 💪💪
Haha, thank you for saying that! Some people are way too judgey!
Totally agree with you, it doesn’t matter if you read a lot or a little in a year, what matter is the love of books 💞
Aw thank you, you’re sweet 🥰🥰 Thanks for stopping by and HAPPY READING! 😁😁
I don’t feel goodreads challenge as an actual challenge as I can change number any time of the year if I feel wouldn’t able achieve the set number of goal. Lat year I kept it 70 but later changed it to 100 once I knew I could easily read more than 70. Great post!
Oh yes, that is great! 😊
Thank you so so much 😘😘
Nice read, I agree. But I was in another extreme…just keep reading whatever comes on my way. This year I have added a framework…so have a list of about 12 carefully selected books to read..committed it on my blog too…if get different ones on my way, ready to read extra…but want to finish the planned one…
Thank you! 😊
That’s really smart!!
Happy reading 😘😘
Great blog, as always. You bring up such important points. I do not do the challenges, as I am a private tutor and spend much of my time re-reading the classics. And as an author of 15 novels, I write all day. At night, Netlix is an elixir for my exhausted brain!
What I have noticed with the Goodreads competition is a sort of frenzy with regards to how many books can be read. And while I would never accuse someone of not really reading so many, I, too, wonder how they do it! Are they living in their parent’s basement without rent or food costs? Do they skip walking the dog or washing their dishes? Are they collecting unemployment while cozied up in the back of a bookstore? Do they work full time, put the kids to bed, and somehow manage to speed through a 500 page book in a night? I once saw a gal on Goodreads who bragged that she had read a book a day. A BOOK A DAY! Yikes. I’m lucky if I get through a book a week. Not only that, but she had rated every one of the books five stars. Like…what?
So I guess, while I always want people to love reading, I have to take this competition thing with a grain of salt. I love connecting with readers, the ones who share why they chose a certain book, how they felt about it, and what made it work (or not work) for them. I want to think of reading as a catalyst to conversation, not a race to an invisible finish line. And while competitions are great for getting some to read at all, do we really want books to be about how many we’ve read, instead of how the words somehow changed us? I will always choose the latter.
Aww thank you so so much! ☺️
I totally get that!! You need to let your brain rest for a bit! And Netflix IS the perfect cure 😊
Oh my god YES! I’m so glad I’m not the only one asking myself those questions!! How do they read so many books??! 😱
A BOOK A DAY? Wow! That’s crazy! Even if you do have the time to do so, don’t you want to rest your eyes or ears if it’s an audiobook for a bit and do something else??! And rating all of them 5 stars…hum okay, haha!
YES, YES, YES! I 100% agree! 😍
Thank you SO much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on the subject! HAPPY READING 😁😁
I’m not doing the Goodreads challenge this year for pretty much the exact same reasons. I didn’t do it last year either and just set my “goal” to 1 book so that I could keep track of how many books I was reading without feeling any pressure. I ended up reading a lot less than I usually would but I actually enjoyed the majority of the books that I read.
Glad to see I’m not the only one 🙈
That’s great, good for you!!
Thanks for stopping by and happy reading 😘😘
Yes!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I totally enjoyed reading this! Even though I do still participate in the Goodreads Reading Challenge, I feel you on all your points! This year I made it a commitment to read a number that I know I can achieve so that it doesn’t feel like I NEED to read all these books and I can actually enjoy them!
I also think the same thing when I see people read hundreds of books a year, did they even enjoy what they read? Because sometimes when I read a book too fast I worry if I really got the full experience.
Again, loved this post! Great discussion! 😃💞
Aww thank you!! I’m so happy you enjoyed it! ☺️☺️
Yeees, I think that’s really smart! That way you won’t feel too much pressure!
Totally, I feel like I need to soak up the story a bit like I don’t want to read it too fast because then it’s over too soon, haha!
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on the topic! Happy reading 😘😘
You’re welcome! 😊
Exactly, it makes me feel like I can accomplish my goals!
Again, you’re welcome!! Such a great topic! Happy Reading! 💞
Some people do just read really fast. I have a friend who reads 100 books a year and is able to write and edit her novel too and have a full time job. I’m amazed by her! My dad also has learnt this way of reading where he can read a whole paragraphs in one go rather than word by word. He’s retired but he can read 300 books a year with that technique though he also does audiobooks. He tried to teach me it but I just can’t do it!
I quite enjoy the Goodreads challenge, it does encourage me to read more. I always set realistic targets for myself but if I miss them it’s not a big deal. I also rarely look at other people’s challenges so I never feel I’m competing. This year I’ve left Goodreads and moved to Storygraph but it has the same challenge system. I’ve set a much higher goal this year than normal as I managed to read so much in 2020. I’m excited to see if I can reach it!
Sallybythesea.home.blog
Oh my god, she’s like a superhero!!
Wow, I haven’t even heard of this technique! I don’t think I could do it, I would always be going back and forth to make sure I haven’t missed anything. But hats off to your dad! 😊
That’s awesome! Good for you! 💞 Oh great!! I hope you’ll make it 💪💪
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, happy reading 😘
I honestly don’t see the point of reading as fast as we can if it means sacrificing truly understanding the book tbh (no shade to anyone who likes to read quick tho!) This is why I also rarely read in places i can’t concentrate cause I wanna treat the book like a person I’m truly trying to get to know. You have some great points btw! :))
Yeees! I totally agree!!
Thank you so much ☺️
Happy reading 😘😘
Yes, lots of people are saying the same thing. I like to keep track of my reads, so I still do it, but I’ll raise or lower my goal as I see fit, and that keep me from feeling pressure.
That’s awesome!! 😁
I still keep track of my reads on Goodreads, I just don’t enter the challenge 😊
Thank you so so much for stopping by 😘😘
I agree that with pressure and competitiveness the GoodReads challenge can become so toxic! Last year I just set it at 25 books because I knew I would easily exceed it – so satisfying seeing that 200% at the end! I just use it as a way to track the books I read in the year.
Yeees! Glad to see I’m not the only one feeling that way!
Yaaay, awesome!! 😁
Same here, Goodreads is still an awesome tool to keep track of my read 😊
Thanks for stopping by and happy reading 😘😘
For the past two years, I have been doing the goodreads challenge. When I first joined Goodreads, I didn’t do the challenge. I had read a post two years ago about a person saying they set the goal really low and see how far that person could do. So I set my goal to 10 for the past two years.
Yes, I do agree it shouldn’t be a competition. I don’t really look at other’s goals. I just use the challenge as tool to count books that I’ve read. I only read 37 books last year and that’s ok. I’m not looking to read over 100 books. The reason I started doing it was to see how many books I would read in a year not to beat someone’s goals.
Oh yes, that’s actually smart! That way you won’t feel as much pressure!
Good for you!! I actually keep track of my reading, I really enjoy to see how many books I’ve managed to read at the end of the year, I just don’t put a number down. 😊
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, happy reading! 😘😘
I still do the Goodreads Challenge because it does encourage me to read more, but there are definitely some downsides, so I can understand your reasons for not doing it. I always feel bad too when I see people who read 100s of books a year (I have no idea how they do it either!), and it does end up making reading a competition.
I also just get a bit tired of how bad the Goodreads website and app is. I know there is other options now, so I really need to look into switching over!
It can be a great motivation tool, I guess it just doesn’t work well for me 😊
Yeeees I really don’t know how they do it, that’s crazy haha!
Reading should never turn into a competition, it should always be about fun 😁
Oh yes I absolutely need to look at others! I bet there are great options out there!
Thanks again for stopping by, happy reading 😘😘
Yeah, i’m trying this year just to keep track of the # of new books I read since I’m a notorious re-reader. Its more of a challenge to get out of my comfort zones than a strict number to compete with other readers. And i completely agree with you; you read because it brings you joy, why force yourself to read? Seems like a recipe to keep stressed out about reading and then why read?!
Oh that’s such a great idea!! 😊
YEEES! Totally! Reading should always be about fun 😁
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! 😘😘
You put everything I’ve ever thought about the Goodreads challenge so clearly!! I don’t like the pressure… and feeling stressed about not reading enough is the last thing I want to be doing with my life 😅 Great discussion Nyx!! ❤️
Aww I’m so glad! ☺️
Yes totally, life is already way too stressful!
Thank you so so much 😘😘
I totally understand where you come from, but i still put a number on the Goodreads challenge, one i know i can meet without stressing about it, just because i love that at the end of the year they resume everything you read, how much pages, how many books etc.
Yees, I love that too! I don’t put a number down but at the end of the year I still look at all the books I’ve read 😊
Thank you so much for stopping by, happy reading! 😘😘
I actually really like reading challenges even though I rarely join them. The only constant is the goodreads challenge but I’m always setting goals I know I can reach. I want to do the challenge to feel some kind of accomplishment, yet I don’t want to pressure myself, that’s why I always pick a number I can meet.
But I totally get why you don’t want to do the challenge. Readers are all different and that’s okay and great. But yes, reading is not a competition, that’s why I ignore most other goodreads challenges and just go by my own pace 🙂 Everyone has to find their own way, though, and find out which reading habits are great and which are bad for them and it’s great you found yours 🙂
That’s really smart, if I were to do it again I would definitely do the same thing! 😁
YEEES exactly! Everyone is different with their reading, you just need to find what works for you 😊
Thank you, that’s so sweet! And thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts 😘😘
I definitely understand your reasoning for not participating in the Goodreads Challenge! I think it’s similar to why I detest TBRs. The pressure of *having* to read a book takes all the fun out of it, by mood reading I can still enjoy the process.
I participate in the Goodreads Challenge, but I change my goal around as needed so it never stresses me out. What I’ve been doing for the past few years now, is setting my goal to a number that I know I can definitely achieve, and then slowly increasing that goal 10 books at a time until some point in December when I stop changing the number, and complete whatever that final goal was. Even this year, I wrote in my goals post that I want to read 100 books, but Goodreads thinks I only want to read 50 books because I don’t want to get any messages telling me I’m 17 books behind while I’m in the middle of my busy semester!
I’m curious though. Do you participate in any other challenges? Or do they all cause you to feel too pressured?
Oh YES the TBRs!! It really takes all the fun out of it 😅
That’s so smart!! I love that strategy! That way you don’t have that annoying pressure but you still manage to challenge yourself! 😁
I don’t participate in any other challenges for the same reason. I’m more of a mood reader so I don’t feel confortable being obligated to read a specific book. But I think I would enjoy to challenge myself to read more different genres. A challenge not about numbers but about diversity maybe.
I can definitely agree with your thoughts about not doing the challenge as it can add pressure and makes you forget about why you are reading. That’s why this year I set my goal to quite an easily achievable goal for me so it isn’t about a race but just enjoying it. I also think I wouldn’t mind if I failed as I have done before, lol. But this post did make a lot of sense and I definitely think I could see myself not doing the challenge for these reasons so it is nice to know it works for you 💕. It was an interesting read, thank you for sharing !!
Good for you!! Reading should always be about fun 😁
Aww thank you, I’m so happy you enjoyed it! ☺️☺️
Happy reading 😘😘
Great post Nyx, I really enjoyed reading it! I haven’t really thought about the goodreads challenge much it’s just something I’ve done ever since I joined goodreads, but generally I set my number as an amount of books that I think I should be able to read in a week (or rather, an amount that I can definitely read by deleting some social media time) so for me it’s less pressure and I always get behind but can usually get back on track? But I totally get what you mean about it feeling like it’s a competition, man some people read a crazy number of books a year!
Aww thank you, I’m so glad!! ☺️
Good for you! That’s way less pressure that way! 😊
Yees, looking at some numbers I’m like 😱 Haha!
Thank you so much for stopping and sharing your thoughts, happy reading 😘😘
Nyx, this sounds SO freeing, I wish I was able to let it go myself, honestly! I struggle for the exact same reasons you do- I am SO competitive, even with myself. I have become better at not getting upset when I see someone else’s bananas numbers (like how exactly does a human brain consume 500 books a year? I feel like we need to investigate tbh), but I still cannot stop competing with like, Last Year Shannon! And it’s like, maybe she had more time than me or whatever, but NOPE I still can’t let it go. I think mostly because of review books, I have sort of requested myself into the situation? Like my dumb self requests so many books that I *do* feel like it is an obligation (I loved your comparison to mindless snacking because YES that is exactly what it feels like at times!) so I think that will have to be my first step. Some day 😂
It is, SO freeing! 🤗🤗
Oh my god, I’m so glad I’m not the only one feeling that way! You just described perfectly how my brain works, haha 🙈
And yes we definitely should investigate, 500 books per year, it’s CRAZY! 😅
Ah yes the requests! I feel you, you may be right maybe your first step should be to slow down with the requests 😂
Thank you so so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on the topic!! 😘😘
: )
That’s a great way to do it. Have your own goal, and don’t share it unless you want to at the end. Who needs the pressure? Reading should be a wonderful (and often personal) journey!
Yees, yees, YEEES! 😊
💞✨
Hi Nyx, I get you! I’m so intimidated by those (very awesome) folks out there who read 100 or 125 books a year. I’m lucky if I could manage 40 or 50 with a full-time job and a goal to write a novel. I still set goodreads goal just to give myself a number to work towards and just try not to care about what other people’s numbers are
Hi there! 😊 Yaay, glad to see I’m not the only one feeling that way 🙈
Good for you!! That’s how I should do it!
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, happy reading 😘😘
I still use the Goodreads challenge because I like to track my reading and I like having a vague goal, but I basically just choose a number I know I’ll hit pretty easily. That way the challenge usually tells me ahead, and I’m happy. 🙂
Yeees, good for you!! If I were to start again, that’s the way I would do it 😊
Thank you so much for stopping by, happy reading! 😘😘
