There are many, many books I haven’t had the time to read just yet. It’s funny: I started book blogging because I love books so much and wanted to find MORE books and bloggers to scream about these with and… here I am 6 years later SCREAMING because I don’t have enough time to read them all.
I’m hoping, with this list, to hold myself accountable a little bit and to list these books that have been released in the last couple of years that I’ve been REALLY eager to read, but… haven’t. There aren’t all new.. though, to be honest, they’re not THAT old either. But well, in publishing if you’re released in 2019 you’re kind of old already, especially here in the book blogging world, where everyone’s already screaming about 2021, 2022 and 2023 releases already. (WHAT IS TIME? I do not know).
I know. I’m one of these people. I also screamed about my most anticipated 2021 releases, aerm. ALL THE BOOKS.
So here goes! Here’s a small list of 10 backlist books that sound THAT amazing and I’m hoping to read soon-ish. I hope this will give you some ideas for your TBR as well!

Backlist YA books on my TBR
Picture Us in the Light, Kelly Loy Gilbert
Picture Us in the Light has been on my TBR for a little while now and it sounds wonderfully emotional. The main character is an artist, pining for his best friend, it has family secrets and loads of emotions and I can’t wait to cry over this book okay.

The Weight of Feathers, Anna-Marie McLemore
I fell for Anna-Marie McLemore by reading Miss Meteor and can’t wait to read all of this author’s work now. The Weight of Feathers has been on my TBR the longest, it has two rival families and basically is an apparently very gorgeous and magical Romeo & Juliet retelling and I kind of need it now.
Add to Goodreads ☂️ Buy on: Book Depository – Bookshop
Crier’s War, Nina Varela
Everyone has been screaming about this book for two years now and I need to read it. An impossible love between two girls, one human, one made, honestly that only makes me want to scream. So many of my friends loved this, the incredible world and slow burning romance and I can’t wait to read it.
Add to Goodreads ☂️ Buy on: Book Depository – Bookshop
The Rose Society, Marie Lu
I read The Young Elites…I can’t even remember when. It’s been a couple of years? I remember loving it, but since I forever suck with reading series, I haven’t gotten to the sequel. It’s one of these series I NEED to continue with, though. I was obsessed with the main character and that little bit of darkness in her too.
Add to Goodreads ☂️ Buy on: Book Depository – Bookshop
The Lost & Found, Katrina Leno
I read Summer of Salt by Katrina Leno and loved it so much I woved to read more and… well here we are. Lost & Found sounds SO wonderful though: internet friendship, mental health rep (anxiety and PTSD from what I gathered!), family and road trips?? It’s everything I need in my books.
Add to Goodreads ☂️ Buy on: Book Depository – Bookshop
Have a Little Faith in Me, Sonia Hartl
I got my eye on Have a Little Faith in Me thanks to multiple bloggers I trust and adore (thank you Shannon, Sam & Veronika!) and, despite me not being a fan of that cover, I’m already a fan of the book. It questions sexuality, religion, consent, has summer camp vibes and fake dating and this sounds really, really good!
Add to Goodreads ☂️ Buy on: Book Depository – Bookshop
The Weight of the Stars
May recommended this book multiple times and it just sounds so good, I need to get a copy of this as soon as possible. Slow burning romance and stunning writing and found family and siblings love. I need this.
Add to Goodreads ☂️ Buy on: Book Depository – Bookshop
Dear Haiti, Love Alaine
This was co-written by sisters and, goals. Okay, more seriously, this beautiful book told through mixed media is about Alaine, daughter of immigrants visiting Haiti and meeting the rest of her family for the first time. It sounds wonderful and unique and I’m excited!!
Add to Goodreads ☂️ Buy on: Book Depository – Bookshop
I Love You so Mochi, Sarah Kuhn
I’m thinking about Kat when I think about this book because she loves it so much. I Love You So Mochi sounds ADORABLE, there’s no other word for it. The main character in this, Kimi, is going to Kyoto to see her estranged grandparents and discovers the culture and herself, too. I’m uuugh this sounds too good and too lovely and marshmallowy for me.
Add to Goodreads ☂️ Buy on: Book Depository – Bookshop
Sick Kids in Love, Hannah Moskowitz
This is a story about two kids with chronic, invisible illnesses and they become friends and fall in love and they do not die at the end. Malka can’t stop screaming about it and I’m eager to read it for that, too. That and the fact that it sounds so wholesome and beautiful and important and about what it means to be chronically ill, too. It’s #ownvoices and ahh, I need this.

I hope we can read it soon, it sounds fantastic! 🥰
Lydia Tewkesbury says
I love this! I used to worry about reading back list because of feeling like I constantly have to ‘keep up’ but in the past year I have been much more forgiving with myself. I’ve even started fairly regularly rereading (gasp, I know). There are SO MANY backlist books i still want to read. I actually haven’t heard of most of these, but I Love You So Mochi sounds totally adorable.
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Oh thank you so much! I need to get into re reading as well, there are so many new books I want to get to, but I want to take time to re read my favorites as well 🥰
I hope we can read I Love You So Mochi, it sounds so lovely!

I hope you get to read all of those.

drizzleandhurricanebooks says
I can’t wait to be emotionally destroyed by this book!! 😭😭 and i’m so glad you loved these as well, I can’t wait to get to them all. Thank you so, so much, Ash, you too! <3
Malka @ Paper Procrastinators says
There are so many backlist books that I plan on reading this year as well! Maybe I should write a similar post at some point! Some at the top of my list are The Starless Sea and the House in the Cerulean Sea! (I just now noticed that both of these books end with “Sea” which I find amusing!)
As for Picture us in the light, Ash and Rhi both love that book and have been telling me to read it for months now, but since it’s heavy hitting, I’m avoiding it for now! But I have read The Lost and Found and really enjoyed it, so I hope you will too! Obviously though, I am most excited about you reading Sick Kids in Love! I can’t believe I convinced you to read it! I adore that book with all my heart and would love to hear all the details of what you think of it as you read it!
Great post, and I hope you get a chance to read and love all of these books this year!
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
AH YES you should, I would love to see your list, Malka <3 I've heard amazing things about The Starless Sea, I hope you'll enjoy it!
I get that, I've been avoiding it for a little while as well, I'm waiting to be emotionally ready for it 😂 and I'm glad to hear you loved The lost and found!
OF COURSE, you really made me add this book to my TBR and I want to read it SO MUCH, it sounds so good. I'll make sure to update you when I read it! 😀
anovelglimpse says
I hope you accomplish reading these this year. It’s almost more rewarding knocking older books off the TBR than the newer ones.
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Agree! Thank you so much 🥰
biteintobooks says
I hope you’ll be able to get to all these amazing-looking books! I haven’t read any of them but I have a NEVER ENDING TBR. It’s crazy.
And this crazy person of a reader keeps adding books to it… Weird…
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
There are SO MANY BOOKS everywhere, it never ever stops ahah 😭😭
Kat Impossible says
*cough* WHERE IS OUR DARK DUET!? *cough* hahaha just joking. You don’t have to read it and we both know why haha
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
KAT I AM 😭😭 I can’t get over knowing what happens in it already, I’m 😭😭
Sam@WLABB says
I read 7 of these, and almost all got really high ratings. I yell about Sick Kids all the time. It was so well done, and Have a Little Faith in Me surprised me in the best way. Mochi was fantastic, same with Lost & Found. A solid bunch of books here. I hope you get to them and love them as much as I did
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
AH YAY! I trust your recommendations SO much and I’m so glad you enjoyed so many of these. Can’t wait to read them all <3
Whimsically Meghan says
I haven’t read any of these books but I so agree with you about books that are a few years old they are deemed old and I find that so sad! I’m still making my way through books released in 2017 😅 but I’m in no rush! Happy reading! 💞
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Right? Books are getting “old” way too soon, it makes me so sad.
Thank you so much!! <3
Whimsically Meghan says
It’s like after a month a book is old and I’m like, I can’t keep up with this!
You’re very welcome! ❤️
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
We can never keep up with them all, no matter how hard we try 😂😂
Never Not Reading says
I keep adding Crier’s War to my tbr, and then deleting it when I realize it’s YA. I don’t know why, but YA sci-fi never works for me. 🙁
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Oh no really! 😭😭 I’m sorry to hear that! Who knows, Crier’s War might end up being an exception… If you keep on adding it to your TBR, maybe it’s a sign you should try it! 🙂
Never Not Reading says
Haha, good point!
Dezzy @ The Thoughtful Voice says
ahh love this post Marie!! i definitely feel you in that i have soooo many books that i really want to read, especially backlist ones. our TBRs really are an ever-growing mountain ahahaha :’) i’m SO excited for you to read Crier’s War – it’s so beautiful and emotional and i’m sure you’re going to love it. i’m hopefully gonna read the sequel, Iron Heart, soon!! i’m also excited for you to continue The Young Elites series, ahhh it’s incredible. some books i want to read this year are The House in the Cerulean Sea, Six of Crows, and Cemetery Boys ☺️
drizzleandhurricanebooks says

Thank you so, so much! And I hope you’ll love Cemetery Boys, I heard amazing things about this book!
Sophie @ Me & Ink says
I’ve heard so many good things about Picture Us in The Light so it is one that I have been meaning to read as well. It sounds like it is going to be an amazing read.
I hope you are able to read The Rose Society because I thought it was such a good sequel, I really liked it.
I, also, need to read Sick Kids in Love, I Love You So Mochi, Have A Little Faith In Me, The Weights of The Stars and Crier’s War so this list really felt like you read my mind, haha. 💕
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Right? It sounds like a beautiful, emotional read and I can’t wait to get to it <3
I'm so glad you liked The Rose Society! I've been wanting to go on with this series, but... I always struggle with sequels ahah 🙂
Thakn you so much! I hope we both can read some of these soon 😀
Kat @ Bookish Blades says
The Young Elites is one of my all time favourite series and I really hope you’ll love it as much as I do when you continue <3 The third book is my favourite 🙂
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ohh really? That’s so good to hear, I can’t wait to continue with it. I hope I will soon 😀
Thank you so much, Kat!
christine @ ladygetslit says
I also have the longest list of books I’ve been meaning to read for literally years😬 the only one on your list that I’ve actually read is Sick Kids in Love and 😍😍😍I hope you do get around to reading it, because it was so great. You know I love the messy characters, the ones who sometimes act like jerks because they don’t have it figured out. Plus I had never read a book that featured a chronic invisible illness, and I think that’s so important.
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahh I’m glad you loved Sick Kids in Love! I heard incredible things about it and ahh, you have me even more eager to buy myself a copy now! 😍😍
Fadwa @ Word Wonders says
The Weight of the Stars is PHENOMENAL and Crier’s War id delightful too!! hope you enjoy both!
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ah that’s so good to hear, I hope I’ll love them too! Thank you so much! <3

Hope you enjoy reading these books! I absolutely adored Crier’s War, slow burn romances are one of my weaknesses.
I’m really looking forward to reading I Love You So Mochi and I hope I can get to it this year!
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahh yay, I adore slow burning romances so I’m eager to read that one. And I Love You so Mochi sounds ADORABLE. I hope we both can read it soon 🙂
Thank you so much!! <3

drizzleandhurricanebooks says
I realize that… I mean honestly, I started drafting this post and all I could think of was “this is may, this is may, this is may too”. This just proves how good you are at book recommendations! 😎
Okay so I didn’t know that book and just looked it up and……….. added it to my TBR. WHY do you do this to me 😭 Honestly though, it sounds like such a good! book!! ahh I need to read it as well! 😭

HAHAHA I’M CRYING i love my power 😎😎
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
I love it too ahah 😎
cherelle @ a bolt out of the book says
I’m so excited for you to continue with The Young Elites series… it gets even darker and delves in deeper into morally grey aspect! Agreed, I Love You So Mochi sounds like an extremely endearing read, it’s going onto my tbr as well. All the best on this list, Marie! 💖
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahhh that’s so good to know, I’m eager to read more and fall more in love with this series!
I hope you’ll love I Love you so mochi, it sounds ADORABLE. 🥰 Thank you so, so much, Cherelle!!
Louise @ Monstrumology says
My TBR is pretty much always full of backlist titles because I don’t like feeling pressured to read new releases while they’re hot and would rather get to them in my own time. I’m hoping to read The Weight of the Stars this year too! I had planned to read it in November but I ended up in a huge reading slump so it got pushed back a lot.
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Oh I can understand that! I hope you’ll get to read The Weight of the Stars, it sounds like a beautiful read, I can’t wait to get to it.
Thank you so, so much for stopping by, Louise! <3
Lauren Becker says
I have Dear Haiti that I’m hoping to read next month. Picture Us in the Light was fabulous though, so read that one for sure!

drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahhh that’s so good to hear! I think I need to be emotionally ready for Picture Us in the Light, but I can’t wait to read it. <3
Thank you so much, Lauren 🙂
Aria says
I read The Weight of the Stars last year, and it is such a beautiful book!! 😍 It’s really well written, and overall amazing. I also really want to read Dear Haiti, Love Elaine and I Love You So Mochi. One backlist book that I really want to read this year is Circe, by Madeline Miller. I have a copy, but I just haven’t gotten around to reading it!! 🙈 Good luck with reading all of these this year, it’s a great list of books 💕✨
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ohh this is wonderful to know, I can’t wait to read it 🥰 I’ve heard incredible things about Circe, I hope you can read it soon and will love it!
Thank you so, so much for your comment, Aria! 🥰
Charis @ Charis Rae says
I love that you’re highlighting backlist books because that’s exactly what I’m reading, and have been reading for most of 2020 and now into 2021. I can’t remember the last book I read that was new… it may have been The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes! XD
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ah that’s wonderful! I think there are so many little gems we forget too quickly because of new releases. I know I’m guilty of that, I want to do my best to read more backlist books, too! <3
tiffany @ readbytiffany says
ahhh i still need to read rose society too!! i never finished the young elites series 🙈
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
AHHH tiffany we need to read it together, maybe!! 👀👀
Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight says
So I have so many of these on my TBR but I also have read quite a few so I have thoughts! First, I LOVED Crier’s War (and now the sequel is on my must-read list!) and Sick Kids in Love and Have A Little Faith, so I think you’ll love them! I feel you so much with Young Elites- I could not tell you when I read it or what it is even about, but I am over here with the next two books on my shelf even though I don’t even think I especially liked the first one? I also own and want to read Weight of Feathers, The Weight of the Stars, and Lost and Found. Hopefully we both enjoy them!
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
AH yay! I’m so glad you loved so many of these books, I can’t wait to read them 👀
😂 I’m glad I’m not the only one with issues when it comes to series, I have such a hard time following up with them, I’m not sure why 😂
Thank you so, soo much Shannon! I hope you’ll love all of these 🙂
Charvi says
Crier’s War and I Love You So Movhi are on my tbr too! I just hope I get around to them soon cause the hype!!! Also some hyped backlist books I wanna read are the SOC series and Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahh yay! We need to read them soon, they sound AMAZING. AND CHARVI LOVE AH PLEASE READ EVELYN HUGO 😍 it deserves all the hype it’s getting, I can’t get over how incredible it is 😍
Lais @ The Bookish Skies says
i’m not the biggest fan of fantasy, but i have crier’s war in my TBR too. i don’t know if i’ll get to it this year, but i hope so! i’m excited about the idea of “impossible love story”, i low-key am reading it mostly for the romance element, hahah.
sick kids in love is amazing! i’m sure you’ll love it, it has all the elements of an amazing YA contemporary story and the representation is stunning!
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
ahah I get that, I’m curious both about the romance and the world, so I’m excited! 😍
I’m happy you liked sick kids in love, it sounds like such a beautiful, emotional read, i can’t wait to read it.
Thank you so much, Lais <3
Ruby (Ruby Reads and Reviews) says
I really want to read The Weight of Feathers and Crier’s War too! I hope you enjoy Picture Us in the Light!
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahh I hope we’ll both love these! Thank you so, so much Ruby!
Caro @ bookcheshirecat says
I loved seeing what backlist titles you’re excited for! New releases can be so tempting, but I love the feeling of discovering a good backlist book 🥰 I definitely recommend continuing with the Young Elites Trilogy, I love these books ❤ The Lost & Found has been on my TBR for so long, yet I never got around to reading it😱
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahh I’m so happy you love this series, I really really need to continue with it, I loved the first book. AND The Lost & Found sounds like a book made for us!! I hope we both can read it soon! 🥰
Laura Denis says
Argh, what a bunch of good sounding books!? 🤩I truly also hope to make a big(ger?) dent in my TBR this year, cause as you say, the pile just keeps growing!
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Right? It is endless ahah.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! <3
Ruby Rae Reads says
Love love love this list Marie!! I haven’t read any of these yet either, though I have Picture Us In The Light, Anna-Marie McLemore and Sick Kids In Love alll high up on my tbr. Hope you love them xoxoxo
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahh I hope we’ll both love them!! 🙂
Caitlin @ Caitlin Althea says
i’ve read crier’s war and sick kids in love, and i can confirm that they’re both great books!! the characters in crier’s war are so lovable, and you’re right that sick kids in love is a very wholesome read. its romance was so healthy and angst-free, and though i obviously can’t speak for the representation, i think it was done in such a nuanced way. i’m very excited for picture us in the light too! i don’t know many people who’ve read it, but the ones i do have all sung its praises and i am just very excited to see what i think about it! i hope you enjoy all the books on this list 🤍
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
ahhh yay, I can’t wait to read both now! I feel like I could really love them 🥺 Thank you so, so much for your comment Caitlin!
Sophie Li says
Hi Marie! Agreed that books get old so fast in publishing that it’s hard for me to keep up haha 😂 The Weight of Feathers sound really interesting and I love the cover
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
It’s impossible to keep up ahah. I can’t wait to read that one! 😀
Margaret @ Weird Zeal says
The only ones on this list that I’ve read are The Weight of the Stars and Crier’s War, both of which I just loved. But Picture Us in the Light is high on my TBR too, and I always want to read more Anna-Marie McLemore! Best of luck with all of these books, Marie, and I hope they live up to your expectations ☺
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ah yay! I can’t wait to read both, hope I’ll love them!
Thank you so, so much, Margaret! 🥺
Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction says
I’ve read a few on this list, and I recommend them all: Picture Us in the Light, I Love You So Mochi, and Sick Kids in Love. My daughter read Dear Haiti, Love Alaine, and I definitely want to read it too since my son is adopted from Haiti.

drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahh, I hope so too. It sounds like a wonderful read 😍
Clo @ Cuppa Clo says
Sksksk Marie I didn’t come here to be attacked like this 🤣 I’ve read 0/10 of the books you mentioned but I have erm 5/10 on my TBR. I…*sniffs* I still need to read The Young Elites, like I own the entire trilogy and I remember buying it thinking ‘oh I’ll read this within the year’ yeah, sure >.> I Love You So Mochi, The Weight of the Stars, Picture Us in the Light and Crier’s War are all on my TBR and have been since they like came out? Well Weight of the Stars was on when I kept seeing several book bloggers talking about it but I’ve just…not read any of them yet. Ah here’s to us trying to catch up on our backlist books before they take matters into their own hands and bury us under them hehe.
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
I’m sorry 😂😂 I hope you’ll get to read the young elites, at least the first book like I did 😂 I remember REALLY enjoying it and I hope I can continue with it!!
I hope we can both catch up on our backlist books soon and make these beauties a priority! <3
Melina Elisa says
you somehow always find new books for me to add to my TBR list! I’m way ahead of my book goal for the year, and I’m trying to get through as many books as possible! Great post Marie 🙂 xxx

drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahhh yay! I hope you’ll find books you will love here. Thank you, Melina <3 <3

So I still have no idea why the like button won’t load (I’d blame it on the fact that I tend to read blog posts on my phone but I’ve tried on the computer too and it still didn’t load) but it appears to work in the reader at least (:
I have way too many backlist books to read 🙈 although I will say that after failing to pick up my most anticipated books thanks to my reading slump making me terrified of them letting me down that I’ve finally started reading some of them. So fingers crossed that I’ll finally start catching up.
I hope you get to read and love all of these. I still need to read something by Marie Lu but the series that you’ve listed is definitely one that I hope to read this year. I adore the sound of the Anna-Marie Mclemore book that you’ve included too, I can’t wait to see your thoughts on it when you do get a chance to read it
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
I think I’m having a little issue with it, don’t worry about it too much! <3
I hope you'll get to catch up and read all the books you feel like reading soon, that's all that matters, really: reading what you want, when you want to 🙂
I can't wait to read these books either, I hope we'll both love them 😀 Thank you!!
Charlotte says
Thank you. And yes that’s true, I was just getting frustrated with avoiding my anticipated reads so it’s nice that I’m finally managing to pick them up.
Yes hopefully 💗
Eleanor J. says
Love this list! Picture Us in the Light made my jaw drop so many times, it’s funny how it’s categorized as a contemporary because it’s really more of a mystery, but the family and friendships were so heartwarming! I’m about 40% through I Love You so Mochi and while YA contemporary isn’t my most read genre, I’ve already laughed with the characters quite a bit, so I hope you enjoy! Dear Haiti, Love Alaine sounds so interesting, sisters teaming up to write just sounds amazing, have you and Nyx collaborated on writing before? (sorry if you’ve already answered this!) I can’t wait to read The Weight of the Stars and The Weight of Feathers too!!
drizzleandhurricanebooks says
Ahh thank you so much! You really make me want to read Picture Us in the Light even more, but I feel like I have to be emotionally ready for it, too, ahah.
I also really want to read Dear Haiti, Love Alaine and I adore the fact that it’s written by sisters. Yes we did, actually! We started drafting a story next year together, it was a lot of fun! 😀
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment! <3
