From debut author Nina Varela comes the first book in a richly imagined epic fantasy duology about an impossible love between two girls—one human, one Made—whose romance could be the beginning of a revolution.
Perfect for fans of Marie Rutkoski’s The Winner’s Curse as well as Game of Thrones and
Westworld
.
After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, designed to be the playthings of royals, usurped their owners’ estates and bent the human race to their will.
Now Ayla, a human servant rising in the ranks at the House of the Sovereign, dreams of avenging her family’s death…by killing the sovereign’s daughter, Lady Crier.
Crier was Made to be beautiful, flawless, and to carry on her father’s legacy. But that was before her betrothal to the enigmatic Scyre Kinok, before she discovered her father isn’t the benevolent king she once admired, and most importantly, before she met Ayla.
Now, with growing human unrest across the land, pressures from a foreign queen, and an evil new leader on the rise, Crier and Ayla find there may be only one path to love: war.

I ENJOYED…
☂️
- Crier’s War was one of the books on my backlist TBR that I really wanted to read. EVERYONE I know and trust really loved it, so I went in with Expectations. This book book threw my expectations out the window and made me SCREAM.
- I was hooked right from the start into this unique world the author creates, where Automae, humans re-made with better abilities, rule and Humans are inferior. The world-building is absolutely fantastic, with a complex history and rules of its own. I was curious from the start and, as I read on, I was fascinated. I couldn’t stop reading.
- It helps that I quickly grew attached to both the main characters of this story. We get to see the human side with Ayla, wanting to get into the palace to ruin the people who murdered her family, but we also get Crier’s point of view, the daughter of the current ruler and an Automae.
- Ayla was such a great main character to follow. Driven by revenge for her family, she’s having a hard time letting people in and her growth in the story was absolutely stunning. I loved the way she grows attached to Crier and seeing her dealing with all of these conflicted feelings, SO well done.
- Crier was wonderful, too. She’s curious about humans, humanity and questions a lot of things about the world in place. I loved how she wants to be heard, how she fights for it, too. Her attachment to Ayla was absolutely incredible as well.

- Oh my god the romance in this had me SCREAMING. It’s so beautifully soft, slow-burning and filled with TENSION and little moments and it’s the kind of torture I’m okay with because the yearning god.
- THE TWISTS and turns?!! I gasped out loud more than once while reading.

So glad you loved Crier’s War! I was hoping you would as it’s one of my favorite YA fantasy novels! I agree with everything you said, and I also had a really easy time getting lost in the book and becoming attached to the characters. I need to read the sequel asap – a lot of great sequels came out late last year, and then I didn’t read any of them, haha. Not sure why, but I wasn’t in the mood for sequels. :/ In any case, hopefully I can get to the second book soon. 😀 Great review!
I get that so much, I need to be in the mood for sequels, too 😂 I hope we both can read the second book soon! 😀 Thank you so much, Veronika <3
