Something happens to me fairly often whenever I find out about new books. I either add them on Goodreads, buy them online or just on a whim, whenever I can go to a fabulous English bookshop a couple times a year. I read their synopsis, I fall in love with their covers, I hear amazing things about it all over the blogosphere.
Then, I realize that it’s book one in a series.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against book series. Most of the time. Some of my favorite books of all times are part of a book series. Yet, book series are so complicated.
- They’re long. I mean, there are duologies and trilogies for sure, but then there are series that just grow and go on and on and ooooooon.
- When you start them, they’re not finished and / or the next book is not even written yet. Or you just don’t have the money yet / they’re not available at the library for you to read them RIGHT NOW.
Instead of screaming about how complicated, annoying and beautiful book series are, how the world is magical, well-built and we end up living with the characters for so many years that we just feel like they are part of us, how we scream about 99% of the time about book series we have yet to finish, the ones we completely forgot about and the ones we’re like, lying awake at night thinking about, because let’s face it, WE ARE kind of crazy….
I decided to break things down and talk about some book series I’m reading, loving, hating, the ones I forgot about and the one I desperately need you to make me finish RIGHT NOW.
Fabulous book series I discovered thanks to book blogging
If the book blogging community has given me something, it’s amazing recommendations. It made me read books I did not expect and series I did not expect to love, either. I could go on and on with these, but I’m just going to try and pick three okay.
Thoughts on A Darker Shade of Magic: WHAT IS THIS BOOK AND THE FABULOUS WORLD BUILDING AND ME SCREAMING.
Thoughts on Cinder: Yeah so that’s quite different and why am I loving it so much???
Thoughts on: The Wrath and the Dawn: I AM OBSESSED.
Book series I was tempted to read because of the hype
The hype is scary, guys. It’s like a monster coming from you with the voice of a thousand book bloggers, shoving books in your face until you finally read them. I could probably come up with a couple titles here, but as always, I’ll try and keep it short and sweet.
Thoughts on Caraval: yeah, so that was cool, but I think I missed something here…. it wasn’t as fabulous as I expected it to be.
Thoughts on Forest of a Thousand Lanterns: not what I expected at all. That was bloody kind of cool.
Book series I regret committing to for so long
Only series I could come up with here for now is the Pretty Little Liars one. Why are there so many books?!
Underrated book series
I don’t know how underrated old book series are, but right now, two series come to mind. Okay, I kind of scrolled down on Goodreads for a couple of minutes there, but my memory sucks #sorry.
Thoughts on Awaken: this is very fun and the concept and technologies and old me loving dystopia will always be fond of this.
Thoughts on Unremembered: that book reminded me of the show I loved, Kyle XY and the concept was pretty cool.
Book series I just waited too long for and now… yeah, can’t remember a thing about it
“Waited too long” is… well, don’t take this literaly, too long can be two weeks or two months or two years, I have the memory of a goldfish anyway.
Thoughts on The Girl From Everywhere: I genuinely don’t know why I forgot about this book until just now. I regret it, it was pretty cool.
Thoughts on The Knife: Did not get used to that writing style. Still not over a certain someone NOT being here anymore. Will live in denial and try and forget about it forever.
Book series I’m scared to continue because… what if it’s bad?
Maybe “bad” is the wrong choice of word here. I enjoyed these books, I’m just hoping they will deliver more in their sequels than they did in the first book so… I’m scared.
Thoughts on The Winner’s Curse: read the first two books, had a hard time getting into both, liked it by the end. Forever pushing away the moment I will buy the last book, but still want to know how it ends. STRUGGLE.
Thoughts on Legend: was fun but maybe too quick – I expect too much from the rest to pick it up right away. Ooops.
Book series that I’m just done and over with once and for all because no no no no NO
Yeah I’m kind of exaggerating here, the books I am thinking of weren’t THAT terrible, just… I don’t know, not for me.
Thoughts on Splintered: Gorgeous cover, weird words inside. All the bugs and I don’t know. I didn’t get it? Me confused.
Thoughts on Magonia: GORGEOUS cover once again and weird inside.. yeah, no.
Book series I still need to finish but I’m scared because SCARY AND EMOTIONS OKAY
Thoughts on everything: basically, for these three, I’m just like: THESE BOOKS WERE GREAT but what will happen to my babies, I want to curl up under my covers and cry about it.
Book series I NEED THE NEXT BOOK LIKE YESTERDAY AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME

Yeah so… basically, I scream a lot about book series and I probably forgot thousand of books there, but I did my very best, so… it’s your turn to scream books, what do you say?

My only issue with a book series is when the sequels aren’t published yet, and then I wait, and when I finally read the sequel there are characters that I forget about. Like, who is Jordan again? But, I love it mostly. 🙂
YES THIS. This happens to me ALL. THE. TIME. I am so confused about the characters, or what happened before…. and I am a bit lazy to re-read the previous books, so it’s all my fault, really ??

I have nothing against series, either, but I appreciate standalones so much, since an author can finish a complete story in just one book! And yes, sometimes they don’t need to be dragged out. :/
You HAVEEEE to continue Legend. It’s my all-time favorite YA dystopian–the first book was great, the second was good, and the last will RIP YOUR SOUL APART. Really sad you didn’t like the weirdness in Splintered and Magonia–I friggin’ love weird books. BUT I also quit Splintered because the direction the love triangle was leaning towards made me want to hit myself in the head with a brick. :/

Oh yes, I think standalones are great! I do read a lot more of contemporary books, so they are mostly standalones, but I admire it SO much when authors manage to write fantasy, sci-fi or any other genre that usually drags on for a couple books, in a standalone. I LOVE IT. (Also, it helps with the commitment issue ?)

Hahaha I love how all your series are basically Fantasy or the likes. There aren’t as many series for Contemporaries I feel like … PLL exempt from that.

Yes, I was surprised to write a blog post without mentioning a lot of contemporaries. I’m proud of myself ? I just don’t really know contemporaries that are series? I feel like, the world-building in fantasies kind of allows the book to drag on for a couple more books, whereas contemporaries don’t really… need it. Maybe. ?
I KNOW RIGHT. I am still very disappointed about this, it was so promising and that cover is still so very pretty…. It makes me mad looking at it now ?

I am making it my job to think of contemporary series now … the Anna and the French Kiss series, Gossip Girl, the Thunder Road series, My Life Next Door duology? I guess most of those aren’t sequels per se, but more like set in the same world but with different character focus.

The worst feeling I’ve received is buying 2 books in a series thinking “yaaaaa, third one gonna come out next year and i will binge the shit out of these!” then suddenly it turns into 7 books like I DO NOT WANT THAT KIND OF COMMITMENT. It hurts.
SEVEN BOOKS?! What the?? No one is ready for that kind of brutal commitment ? I hate when they just decide to expand series… not to one, but to MULTIPLE books at a time. Do they even have all the ideas ready to go that far? I wonder ?

This is honestly part of the reason that I do not read new releases. I HATE reading a series that isn’t complete. More so I hate when you think it’s done but it isn’t. I love Shatter Me but I would have waited if I had known she would keep going
Oh yes, I get this feeling so much. Personally, I’m thrilled that the Shatter Me series is going on, since I really enjoyed it, but still… you expect things to be over, you liked how things were wrapped up then… they just put another book on top of it and risk ruining everything ? I am also sometimes scared of finishing series xD lol… it’s just… you don’t want the feeling to end. There’s definitely something great about standalones, you just don’t have the same expectations. But then again, reading a book and finding out THERE’S GONNA BE MORE is also amazing. But the waiting sucks xD that’s for sure. I also forget!
I was SO SO stoked about Red Rising. And I actually have both the sequels now. IN PRINT. I started reading them, and guess what. I can’t get into it. And THE GUILT is just breaking me xD I loved the first book. I will try again, of course, but meh. It’s probably the expectations after that perfect first book that are making it worse for me.
OH I 200% get this feeling, especially when it’s a series you love, a world you love. It’s like saying goodbye to friends and it is the wooooooorst when that happens, I feel like crying haha. Also, there are tons of expectations when it comes to finishing a series, so… that doesn’t help, either ?
Having to wait is so, so bothering at times… especially when books end on cliffhangers ?

I have a love/hate relationship with book series. I love getting to know a character in a book and then find out I can follow the rest of his/her adventures in other books! But sometimes one book is enough or it can give me some pressure: like when I read and like two books in a trilogy i feel really bad to hate or worse, dnf the third book (it happened for Divergent, Miss Peregrine’s and others).
Also I feel you, sometimes the hype can be a tiny bit too real and stressful ?
I completely get that. I love being able to stay with characters and in a world a bit longer, but sometimes…. it’s just not necessary? Sometimes it makes things worse, too? And I’m like, WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DO THAT ?
(Also, I get it about Divergent. Still not over that ending. I’m glad I didn’t go on with Miss Peregrine ahah. I have read the first book and wasn’t too fond of it :/)
THE HYPE IS SO STRESSFUL ? I am scared and I feel even ashamed that I haven’t read some very popular books out there. We can’t have time to read everything, but… the pressure feels real.

I totally agree with you. It feels like every time I reading a new awesome book it ends with a cliffhanger and I have to wait at least a year to keep read. It’s completely frustrating but I know I’m going to keep reading. 🙂
It is so frustrating, especially when there are massive cliffhangers you did not expect. You just want to know what happens next, haha. All we can do is wait, and hope that this wait will be worth it 🙂

Ok first you HAVE to go on with reading The Winner’s Curse!!! Not getting bad I swear! Then trilogy OK or max 5 to 6 books. More is just too long. I try to wait for the all series to be published but I’m not always able to resist 😉

I listened to the audiobook of The Call by Peadar O Guillin (Which is fantastic and amazing!!!) only to realize it’s part of a series, and the second book isn’t out yet. ?
Thankfully, the next book comes out March 28 so only 17 days to go!! Sometimes I can’t stand reading series that aren’t finished but getting the next book is such an amazing feeling.
Oh no! That’s SO frustrating when you discover that it’s a series AFTER reading the book :/ At least you don’t have to wait too long for the sequel, so that’s pretty cool 😀 x

I completely agree with you on the whole series matter. I mean, I absolutely love book series, if you looked at my Goodreads, you’d see more series than stand-alone novels. Maybe. But the fact of the matter is, nowadays, I have started to realise that maybe I like stand alone books more. Not just because I don’t have to bite my lips till I know what happens to my beloved characters but also because a proper closure is also very tempting. That is not to say that I have stopped reading book series, that might never actually stop but hey, I can still be grumpy about it.
Also, I have to admit that your blog is basically goals. It’s so aesthetically pleasing and the things you post are worth reading. I fell in love with it.
I get your feeling, completely. Sometimes it feels great to have closure, not to have to wait anxiously to see whether or not all of our favorite characters will make it hahaha.

I haven’t gotten Restore Me yet, but I want to read it! The only thing is, I was content on that being a trilogy, and all of a sudden there are three more books? Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad, but I was also so surprised. The commitment is why I didn’t read The Mortal Instruments and all of Cassandra Clare’s books. I mean…they are all interconnected and a part of this huge world, and there are so many of them!
As for series that I want to continue but am scared to, The Wrath and the Dawn! I loved The Wrath and the Dawn, but I heard the second book isn’t that good. I want to read it this year, though!
Oh I understand that so much – it’s always a bit weird, even if it’s a series we love, when we learn that there are more books. I guess all we can do is hope they won’t disappoint us? 🙂

My bugbear is picking up a book and realising it’s the second, third or fourth in a series. I have to ask myself should I go back and read the lot from the start, which could be a problem as the writing could be awful, or do I read the book and find out if I even want to read anything else in the series. For me, all books should have ‘NUMBER (WHATEVER) IN THE SERIES’ in huge letters on the back cover. Either that, or I should be a bit more diligent about reading the blurb.

Obviously I’m a fan of book series. But I agree they can be a little daunting. One of my biggest peeves is when a series is planned for X number of books but they extend the contract for X+ books midway through the series and it shows in the plot progression. The Throne of Glass Series is one example, so is the Crossfire Series.
I really do need to read the sequel(s?) to An Ember in the Ashes. I was really looking forward to the next one and then just forgot about it.
I do recommend picking up the sequels to Legend. They were fabulous!

My thing is, I at least want to KNOW what I am getting myself into. These “surprise series” kill me. Like you think maybe it’s a standalone, and then there you are, 6 books later realizing you didn’t even like the first one that much. I think for me lately (and I don’t know why this is) the subsequent books in almost every series I have read have been letdowns, which makes me so scared to start series. Great post, I definitely agree- series can be SO great or… a big old waste of time. It’s a gamble!

Ahh, this is a lovely post, Marie! I completely relate. 😉 Getting into a series is a lot of commitment, and while I love series, sometimes I do put down books because I don’t feel like getting into another one. It’s also the worst when you pick up a book and read it, then realize it was the second one in a series! It sounds like that’d be impossible to do, but I have done it quite a few times. XD

Oh man I hear you. I have a real problem finishing a series of any length. I have so many that I am part way through, to the point that I no longer remember what the first one was about haha. I keep telling myself this is the year when I’m going to get caught up, but I keep starting new ones as soon as I finish one haha.
This happens to me all the time ? I have tons of series I haven’t finished just yet and I know that I won’t remember a thing, when I’ll finally decide to pick up the next book ? IT’s impossible to keep up anyway haha.

Ugh, I feel like practically everything is a series these days! I get a little frustrated when I pick up YA books and they say #1 on the cover. It’s too much to keep track of! When’s the next book coming out, who are the characters, what’s happening…

Oh I am SO glad you feel this way, I’ve been feeling this, too. Every single book that is released ends up being… well, part of a series, a duology, there is just MORE, whether that was planned all along or just suddenly happens. It is frustrating and… YES, keeping up is hard sometimes? Who are these characters again, I often wonder, haha.

Meanwhile, there’s me that hopes that the book DOES have a sequel and is a series. I feel like there are some worlds where there are too many books (/cough/ Shadowhunters /cough/), but a part of me isn’t too mad about this because I like the security of staying a part of the story for that long of time, especially if I love it (/cough/ also Shadowhunters). So if I hated the first book, that’s a whole other story (and reaction) when I find out there’s more, haha. XD My most anticipated release at the moment is The Cruel Prince since I’m not over the ending in that installment, but I will say no more since I’m not sure if you’ve read it yet. I also can’t wait for book 3 of The Dark Artifices. And LOL, Marie, you so need to pick up the Winner’s trilogy back up. The next books after TWC live up to it, I promise.

This is a really fun post Marie! I prefer standalones over series too because they are shorter so a) I don’t have to give any commitments and b) I don’t have to wait! I TWATD and Splintered, and I think Legend is one of those series that gets better and better with each book! 😀

I love this post!! I haven’t read Cinder yet, so I seriously need to get on that ? I absolutely agree with you for Pretty Little Liars!!! I read up until like Book 13?? It wasn’t even that good of a series, I just felt committed because I had already read so many. I just wanted to know who A was!?I really liked the Legend series, so I definitely recommend continuing~ I’m the same with Young Elites too! It was good, but it was such a scary book!

I DID THE SAME THING. I was committed to the first… maybe 6 books of the pll series, then I just kept on going because I wanted to KNOW. Then… it just frustrated me and I had to stop haha.
Maybe we should read the next book in the young elites series together someday, to be less scared hahaha 🙂

Oh there are so many series I need to read, and need to finish reading as well Marie. I’m very glad to see A Darker Shade of Magic, Cinder and The Wrath and the Dawn made your best series list because they’re three of my best series too (the world building in ADSOM is insanely amazing right?!) Also I can’t wait for the next in the series of The Book of Dust and Warcross,I’m pretty much counting down the days until I have each of them in my hands!
At the moment the main book I can’t wait for is Obsidio (it’s released tomorrow and I’m going to go mad from excitement I think!) If you’re looking for another series to pick up I’d highly recommend The Illuminae Files series, and given the last book is being released (TOMORROW) you won’t have any long waits for the next book in the series if you don’t want there to be! 😀

Series can definitely be both a blessing and a curse! And, don’t worry, you’re not the only one with the memory of a goldfish. I’m lucky I can remember a book I just finished, much less the first in a series that I read a year ago.
Oh I am so glad I’m not the only one haha, I have trouble remembering characters from a book I JUST finished, sometimes. I think that’s a side-effect of reading A LOT of books hahah 🙂

Yes, to all of it. I really don’t like series…I’m 10x more likely to read a book if it’s a standalone. (And I hate it when it’s marked as a standalone and then it sells well so SURPRISE SEQUEL. Ugh!)
I’ve been better about reading series in the past year, but I really have to be convinced beforehand. I have to do research about who likes it and why and how much I’m getting myself into. I just don’t like the commitment of a long series!
OH yes I hate when that happens as well! I’m always like, I did NOT sign up for this haha, I wanted a standalone and I was happy about it haha.

As soon as I saw the title of this blog post I was like “Yes! This is so me!”, because finding out a book is part of a series often terrifies me. It leads to a difficult assessment of whether I’m prepared for that sort of commitment 😛
I don’t tend to continue with any series where I’ve rated the first book less than like a 3.5*, which basically leads to many first books of series littering my bookcase, never to be added to.
YES I am so glad you can relate, I always feel so bothered and anxious whenever I learn a book is part of a series. AM I READY for this commitment, I do not know hahhaa.
Oh that’s annoying, but I think you’re doing a good thing – what’s the point in continuing a series, if you didn’t love the first book? You can always un-haul these first books to get new ones, too 🙂

I love series and hate them at the same time! I recently read the first book in the fallen kingdoms series and the first book in the mistborn and there are SIX BOOKS in each series?? SIX. I don’t think I’m ever going to finish either of those series, it’ll take me foreverrrr!!! AND by the time I get around to reading them I bet I’ll have forgotten all about the first books and have to re read them 😛

Would you recommend The knife of never letting go? I brought the first MASSIVE book from Waterstones start of this year but I haven’t picked it up yet! Partly because I don’t want to start another big series xD
One Dark Duet is amazing, you are in for a treat!!!! I haven’t read the rest of the young elites series as I was pretty disappointed with the second book in an ember in the ashes but I have high hopes for the third book!!

To be honest, The Knife of Never Letting Go was a bit… weird. I didn’t really connect with the writing style in this book and the characters, which made my reading experience not that great. Though, if you enjoy original stories, you should definitely try it out, I know I am the black sheep for that one and that A LOT of people love it 🙂 x

I have such mixed feelings about series because I like continuing stories, but at the same time, there are some series that are just TOO LONG. I wanted to get into The Morganville Vampires a few years ago because I liked the first book, but once I found out that there are 15 books in the series I dropped it because I don’t have the shelf space for it. I might get it in ebook or from the library but I still don’t know because 15 books is too much of a commitment.
And while some of my favourite books are parts of series, I kind of wish there were more standalones because I don’t have the patience to wait months for sequels.
15 BOOKS? Wow, that’s a very long series, that’s for sure. I get it, sometimes we’re just so nervous to start a new series, especially when it’s that long… :/
I agree, I so wish there were a bit less series sometimes, and more standalones. It’s great to wrap things up in a book, too! And having to wait for months, years, even, sometimes, for a sequel… well, we have a LOT of time to forget everything that happened hahaha.

Oh gosh, I have such a love-hate relationship with series. On the one hand, I’ve avoided them for years because of all the reasons you listed…time, money, COMMITMENT. But recently I’ve started to accept them back into my life because I’m missing out on SO MUCH. And that makes me sad. I think it’s easier to read older series, because at least that way I can binge on them all in one go.
Oh yes, that’s a great thing – when you know that a series is done, over, when you can get all the books right away and binge-read them, or just KNOW that you don’t have to wait for the next book to be released ?

I couldn’t believe I would have to wait so long for the next book in Warcross when I finished it either!!! ? At least it will feel more rewarding when I read the second book because of the long wait. ? I’m also in the same boat as you for An Ember in the Ashes — all of my friends have read the second book already, and here I am, with the second book on my shelves, and I haven’t even cracked the book open yet. I was so amazed by the first book that I don’t think I’m ready to handle the sequel yet (and what if the story wasn’t as good as I remembered it to be? You know how sometimes you reread a book and realized that despite you loving it in the past, it’s now just… meh?? ?)
Overall, though, I love book series. I think it’s because I grew up book series all the time, and it wasn’t until I got into middle school that I started reading standalones. I don’t read too many book series now, but they’ll always have a special place in my heart. ? Great post, Marie!

I’m so so much more careful now about the book series I start. And I feel you with Magonia. That book was just so BIZARRE. XD A book has to sound really good for me to commit if the series has more than 4 books, and even more if they’re not all published yet.I just don’t have the time or the emotional strenght!
For example, I would totally dive into a new series by Leigh Bardugo or Laini Taylor. But I’d hesitate if it was an author I haven’t read before. I’m scared to start A Torch Against the Night because I don’t know if I’ll like it.

I have a love/hate for book series, even trilogies. I love them when I read them, but investing so much time into them is a little nerve-racking sometimes. Especially if the series isn’t complete yet and you have to wait for the books to be released! I tend to pick up more standalones these days.
Oh I agree, it’s just so much time and money and sometimes… we wait for months and months, only to be disappointed. Hate when that happens, standalones are a much safer bet when we are not sure ?

I LOVE series as long as all the books are already out or there’s a reasonable late between books. I started reading Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller series and fell in love, read the first two of the trilogy (both unreasonably large) and needed the third book, turns out book two came out EIGHT years ago with no clue as to when book three will come out. That moment I really hated book series’s.
Oh I get that – when you don’t know when the next book in a series will be released… you don’t know how long you’ll have to wait and THAT is scary ??

I relate to your post so much. Book series are such a huge gamble, especially when you have to wait for the sequels to be released. I love them, but they also scare me.
I recently finished the Falling Kingdoms series and the last book let me down, but I’m not even sure it was the book’s fault per se, my reading tastes had just changed so much since I had started it. A second problem if I have is what about if I forgot everything and lost interest? That’s what’s happening to me with the Illuminae Files, Obsidio was released today and… I don’t even want to read it anymore. *cries* Finally, what scares me about book series is that sometimes, you signed up for three books, and then three others are added and I feel betrayed. I didn’t sign up for that!! True, there are series where I don’t mind, especially if they’re kind of spin-off series, take for example all the Shadowthunter books, or The Book of Dust (I still need to read it though!!). I’ve given up on a lot of book series lately because of those three reasons, it makes me a bit sad, because I usually adore them so much.
BUT there are still ones I’m very excited about, especially when I’ve read lots of books by the authors or I’m sure nothing will be added. At the moment, I’m most excited about Archenemies by Marissa Meyer because I adored Renegades so much and The Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor (apparently, I’m into duologies at the moment). Like a lot of people, I also need Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare NOW.

I basically discovered these three series due to blogging as well (but I haven’t finished the Lunar Chronicles or The Shades of Magic Trilogy so opps) 😀 I cannot keep track of how man other amazing Series I discovered due to someone recommending it to me or seeing it anywhere be it on a blog or on Booktube!
The hype truly is scary and has both worked, but also introduced me to big disappointments, it’s always a gamble ?
Ohhhh you’ve read Awaken, I feel like I haven’t heard anyone talk about this Series 😀 I have to admit that I’ve only read the first book years ago, have you read the entire Series?
And I’m with you on The Girl from Everywhere, I bought the Duology last year and still haven’t read it ? I don’t want to get into all the Series that I need to continue or have forgotten about, there’s too much I want to read all at once xD

I feel like a walking contradiction. I’m always championing more standalone fantasy novels, but when I finish those standalone’s I’m demanding more. It’s an exhausting cycle. I think the reason I find series so daunting is the commitment and promise of emotional trauma along the way. The Winner’s Trilogy, for example, broke me. I knew the second book, in particular, would be emotionally exhausting, so I put off reading it until I couldn’t stand the not knowing. I will say that you need to read The Winner’s Kiss. It’s such a satisfying conclusion to the series!!
I still need to finish the Lumatere Chronicles. Finnikin of the Rock is one of my all-time favourites, but I’ve yet to muster the courage to finish the series.
Ahah I get it, we can never be satisfied anyway, when there is too much, we complain and when there are standalones, we want more 😛
I hope to read the conclusion to the winner’s series this year then, I’m eager to see how it all ends, still, especially knowing you love it so much 🙂 x

I hate book series! I don’t have the time to commit myself to series! It really upsets me when a book that sucks me in ends up having multiple series. It’s so much commitment ( i know i know, that sounds terrible). It’s true though. I have so many amazing books, that sometimes I don’t want to be stuck in one world for so long. Super relateable! I like series especially in fantasy genre but I wish they’re limited to five books only. I can’t handle more than five books because it’s pretty much torture waiting every year for the next sequel. I haven’t read Winner’s Trilogy but I’m planning to binge the whole trilogy this year. I didn’t love splintered either and Magonia has a lot of mixed reviews so I’m really not surprised to hear that you don’t want to continue it. I haven’t finished An Ember of Ashes and Young Elites series but I hope I get to them soon. I’m so excited for Restore Me, and Warcross! Let’s hope we both love it!

I love this! I’m currently reading through The Lunar Chronicles right now and LOVING it. I’ve read Cinder and Scarlett, and I want to continue… but I don’t. I feel like I should take my time and savor the moment.
I know what you mean… waiting for the next book in a series can be torture, especially when it hasn’t even been written yet! I think I’ve decided I like waiting until the series is complete before starting. No wait for me! If not, I’m left pining for something that doesn’t exist yet and it’s crazy.
However, when I get to the last book in a series I don’t want to finish it. I have this internal struggle for weeks before I cave in and finally read it. The need to continue the story outweighs the sadness of it ending.

Book series are something but I must always know it’s a series FOR I MUST OBSESSIVELY RESERCH ALL THE THINGS before buying a book. Or the chance that I’m just buying the first book because what if I love it and I need the others but what if I buy it all and I HATE IT?? These are the true questions here.
OH YES, that’s so terrifying, I am scared of getting a full series and just hating it… that’s why I ONLY buy the first book, EVERY TIME, I never buy a series all at once. But… after, it’s very frustrating when I end up loving the book and am left having to wait for the next books to be there hahaha.

Oh gosh, whenever I read about an awesome book and then find out it’s a series? Ugh, it’s the worst. I am not a series person anymore because I have horrible between-books series amnesia, unless they’re all already out and I can binge them. The worst though is when a book is slated to be a single book, then it’s decided later on that there will be more books. Or when a series you think is done comes back, like the Shatter Me books, which I just had to reread because I couldn’t remember what happened because the series ended four years ago.
I have to say I am very glad The Belles is going to be a series though. In general, however, I am pretty anti-series, as you can probably tell from this comment, lol.
Oh I completely understand that haha – sometimes it is SO very frustrating whenever you expect a book to be a standalone, or a series to be over, then, SURPRISE, there is more. That’s soooooo annoying at times haha, especially since I get amnesia as well and can’t remember a thing about series sometimes 🙂

I equally love and dread books that are part of completed series and that are part of incomplete series. I just don’t have any desire to read every book of a series any more because there’s so much more to read. Then what if I hate the sequels?

I love series. I admit that sometimes I get relaxxed to know that I’m reading a standalone, because I tend to start many series, too much series, and then it’s too late. Books to buy everywhere as much as you unfinishing stories.
Yet, I like the possibility to see much more of the world, meet new characters and even see more of secondary characters I felt in love with (it’s a thing of mine. Don’t know why I keep doing that.)
Oh yes I get it – we can’t help ourselves, there are so many books being released and sometimes they’re just sooooo tempting. Having to wait and thousand more books to read afterwards, now that’s a problem ?

I’ve definitely been surprised by books which I thought were standalone that were actually series. And funnily enough, sometimes I don’t even find out until I am 80% through the book, when my “holy crap I think this is going to be a series…” spidey senses start tingling lol :’) For example, I didn’t realize Warcross is going to be a series LOL! However I am happy that that is the case because I am very excited to find out what happens next 🙂
Oh same here – I love series, I love staying into a world especially if I love it and its characters, but… I am also terrified of commitment and… there are just SO many books?! ??

Haha yes! Sometimes I just want to read a book and be able to put it down and say that I finished something, you know? 🙂
And YES I am so excited for the next book. I think when I really really like a book (like Warcross), I am happy when it turns out to be a series 🙂
Yes I feel the same way – I don’t really mind, I am thrilled when it’s a book I loved. As long as it doesn’t turn into a 2281 book series ?

I feel this so much Marie! Like on one hand I LOVE series because I want to spend as much time as possible with the characters and world I love but on the other hand?? Time?? Money?? Who has that not me. AND THE WAITING OH MY GOD. Especially when it ends on a terrible cliffhanger. It’s been years, but I’m still not over the Mark of Athena cliffhanger ajshgfd Like I always hate waiting an entire year for the next book, but so far nothing has been worse than MoA lol
YES YES YES that’s exactly it, the time, the money, ALL THE WAITING IS SUCH A STRUGGLE – yet we can’t help ourselves,some series sound too amazing to pass it up haha 😛

I relate to this SO WELL. If I know I can get my hands on the whole series, I’m completely fine (and by completely fine, I mean reading frantically trying to finish the entire series in a day). If it’s the first book and the second one isn’t out or not at my library, I go kind of crazy 🙂 . I also read “Wrath and the Dawn” and “A Darker Shade of Magic” because of bloggers and I’m so glad I did. I get the “Waiting too long” for a series so well, it’s happened to me so many times and I just never went back to the series.
You definitely need to finish the Legend trilogy, all three books are so good! (But I’ve also read them years ago and my tastes have changed since then so take my advice with a grain of salt).
I NEED THE WARCROSS SEQUEL TOO! I also need “A Reaper At the Gates” and “Queen of Air and Darkness” so baaaaad!

Waiting is so hard, and we read so many books in between, sometimes we are bount to forget about them haha, I hate when that happens :/

I totally agree with you on Magonia. Just . . . no. Not for me. I usually avoid series because they’re too much of a time commitment. I’ll read book 1, but I’ll only continue with the series if book 1 blows my mind. Usually it doesn’t.
I agree, series really are a commitment … I’m glad at least your system works and that way… I mean, if a first book blew you away, you won’t forget to get to the second book haha 🙂

This book is almost like a tag and I really want to do this?? The one series I spent way too long on, and I can’t even believe I did, is House of Night. I read it when 6 books were out and I WAITED for the rest 6 to release!! Looking back, I can’t even recall much plot that required 12 books?!

I’m currently loving The Invisible Library. It’s basically books, magic, history, BOOKS. I found it cause the 3rd book was on display so hopefully won’t disappoint later.

ooooh I LOVED this post… I enjoyed how it devolved down to you ranting about different series you have started… My one reading failing is that I have to be like 6 star excited to actually READ the next book in a series… or actually just be given it… because I fear the book slump that is book #2 that much… So I related hardcore to this!! <3

I actually love it when I find out it’s a series but I get how it can be a commitment to everyone. A Darker Shade of Magic I have yet to read yet but I liked Cinder. Didn’t like The Wrath and the Dawn (oops). Caraval was ok I guess. I liked it at the time but like I want to reread it to get my thoughts across. Pretty Little Liars is hella long but I loved it so much that I got every single one. For me it was worth it but that might be because I’m PLL trash XD I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy Magonia. I still want to read it even though it sounds weird. Also Warcross ending is still killing me and I still need to read An Ember in the Ashes.
Ohhh so…. now that I have someone that has read the entire PLL series… what did you think of the ending? I kind of gave up, because it was so, so long, so many books haha, but I’ve always been curious. Was the ending worth it? 😀
Magonia is pretty much a hit or miss, from what I’ve heard. It was a bit too strange for me, but hopefully you will love it 😀

Well I liked the ending. Personally it all tied up really well. The last book was the most mind blowing to me. I think I can understand where you got lost. Books 9-16 took way too long but back then I was dedicated to finishing. Also I was a long time watcher of the show so I would say it like this: I watched the show because the characters were better than the actual plot. (The plot used to be cool but in my opinion waned around Season 3 and 4) and the plot was better in the books and had that whole connection thing that I loved but the characters were so annoying. Like I just preferred the characters in the show because they made not as dumb decisions. Honestly I could go on a rant about PLL but I still love it so much. It also was one of those books that helped me get into YA.
Yea I had it signed by the author and I had it since 2016 so I still want to try it. Though just because it’s signed doesn’t mean I’ll enjoy it, (like Red Queen and The Wrath and the Dawn) but I hope it will be great!

Oh don’t worry I get it, I could rant for ages about my favorite things as well 😛 and PLL also contributed in making me love YA books and made me read more, for sure, so I get that 😀
I kind of gave up on the series, even though I enjoyed the cast, I think overall I didn’t feel compelled enough to keep on watching, just like it happened for the books :/

That’s understandable. It does take a lot of commitment. I think I really wanted to finish because I spent so much time watching it. Same for reading it. But if you’re not into it anymore, the pay off wouldn’t be worth it.
