I have mentioned it before and I will say it again, in case you’re not reading my blog often, or in case you’re a bit like me and have the memory of a goldfish. I am buying 99% of my books. As an international book blogger, I don’t have a library with tons of amazing English YA books I can take from and don’t always have the same opportunities to get access to books as other people on the blogosphere, from the US or the UK, can have. So, that story often ends up in me being broke and dying under a massive pile of books.
Today, I thought I’d tackle the strange subject of my book-buying habits, because it has come to my attention that I am sort of a strange species, when it comes to buying books.
My biggest book-buying influence: BLOGGING AND YOU.
Before book blogging, I spent a lot of time on Goodreads, on Amazon suggestions and just picked up the books that seemed remotely interesting.
Now that I’ve been book blogging for over three years, that rarely ever happen, because I know the books I need and WANT to buy. My Goodreads TBR has tripled and I have too many books to choose from to even know where to start. I forbid myself to look at Amazon and Book Depository suggestions, otherwise I’ll end up getting more books and that’s not good for my budget, at all.
When it comes to having to DECIDE which books I need to buy, I have noticed that I tend to rely a whole lot on what you all think. We all have people we wouldn’t make any big decision without in our lives. When it comes to buying books, I can’t (or don’t want to) make big, rash decisions without knowing what my trusted friends in the book community think. For instance, I’ll take anything Kat tells me to buy, just because she knows me way too much and knows the kind of books I could love. I’ll listen to many bloggers’ recommendation, knowing they have the same taste in books as I do.
HOW do I listen to them, exactly, since we all live a thousand miles away from each other? I read their reviews – I read loads of reviews, actually. I bother my sister and ask for her opinion, when I don’t know which one to pick. I sometimes add a book, because I heard tons of praise about it over on twitter, on my TBR ; but wait a little while and / or to see what people actually think of it, before getting it.
I think you probably got that I am NEVER buying books on an impulse.
There are exceptions to that, obviously. If you tell me there’s a new John Green / Morgan Matson / Lauren Oliver book being released soon, I’ll buy them without asking anyone, looking for reviews or anything else. Auto-buy authors, friends.
Writing this and thinking about it makes me realize that people in the bookish community influence me a whole lot, when it comes to buying books. Yet, I think I also know when and how to trust my gut, what I know I might enjoy and what I know I might not enjoy. Despite endless recommendations, I don’t think I’ll pick up the Red Rising series, because it seems quite violent and I don’t know if I can handle it.
I don’t buy books too often.
With the exception of my favorite, auto-buy authors, I never, ever buy books on an impulse and manage not to get books too often, as well. I told you before that I thought I was a bit of an alien here in the bookish community… DO YOU BELIEVE ME NOW?
It’s not that I don’t WANT to buy books all the time, believe me, I do. I think I say approximately twice a day that I’m in the mood to buy books. I spend loads of time on Goodreads thinking about the books I want to get next and over on Book Depository checking prices, adding books to my basket just, you know, to casually torture myself.
I think I kind of have my book-buying habits under control.
I have talked about it before in my TBR post – I don’t buy new books before I am almost done with my current physical – and e-books – TBR. If I dream of getting all the new books, I only order them whenever I feel like I actually can. That helps with the endless physical TBR problem for sure and… helps me with the control freak thingy.
I am lucky enough to be working and to have a decent budget to be able to get new books. Yet, if I often see people over on Youtube videos, in twitter, instagram stories or over in blog posts, showing off their book hauls of 10+ books… I just never buy ten books at a time. I think my maximum has to be 5 or 6 books, because I am a control freak and read the paragraph above with me trying to control everything, even my TBR.
I buy all of my books online
Book Depository, I’m looking at you – since I’m kind of mad at Amazon right now for denying me that signed copy of Turtles All The Way Down. I’m really thankful to be able to order books online, since I don’t have a library and / or a bookshop. I support my local English bookshops – we have a few in France – whenever I am traveling to Paris – which is not often – and the English bookshops around the world whenever I am leaving the country. Waterstone’s, Barnes and Noble’s, Hello Happy Places.
Basically: I think I might be a little bit of a control freak when it comes to buying books. I’ll free myself and get all the books and really be broke when I manage to get a library in my own house. WHY AM I SO DAMN REASONABLE. I ask myself that question every single day.

I rarely buy books anymore. Usually the only ones I buy (or ask people to buy for me) are library books I’ve read and loved and want to have my own copy of so I can reread it! My in-laws are always giving me Barnes & Noble gift cards. I don’t shop much there anymore, but I’ll use those gift cards for impulse purchases from the bargain rack – I don’t feel so bad because it’s not my money and the books don’t cost that much!
Oh I think that’s so great, at least you got your own shelves filled with books you already love 😀 And yay for the bargain rack – who can resist cheap books anyway? I know I can’t, ahah 🙂

I honestly didn’t realize how few options there were for international book bloggers to get books before reading your posts — but I guess at least it means that you can be more selective with the books you buy? ? Despite living in the U.S., I actually also buy most of my books online out of convenience… and also because, like you, book blogging has made me know exactly what books I want to buy. It’s only when I go to bookstores that I find myself with five books I didn’t intend to buy beforehand, and that’s probably why I restrain myself from going to bookstores too often ?
Yes exactly! At least I take time before buying new books and I’m almost guaranteed to like them, I think about them SO much before getting them, hahaha 🙂
OH YES, that happens to me all the time in bookshops, whenever I go to one with the books I want. It happens rarely, but when it does, I end up with 10 books in my hands and not knowing what to do with all of these, hahahaha 🙂

Haha I love this! My TBR list keeps getting longer and instead of picking my next book from there I end up picking up something else entirely.
I’m lucky to have a few friends who read pretty much the same kind of books that I do. That way not only do I get new suggestions that I know I won’t regret reading, we’re also able to exchange/borrow books every few days. 🙂

I admit, I’ve been SO influenced by the book community ever since I started getting more and more into it. However, I notice that bookstores have this really obnoxious habit of stocking all of the popular titles only in hardback, which drives me absolutely crazy, so no matter how much I want them, I still don’t buy them 🙁 But I’ve recently started this really bad habit of going absolutely crazy at thrift stores! I know it doesn’t sound too awful since most books are like $2, but now I’m winding up with books I’m only half interested in, and way more than I can even possibly read. Maybe it’s just retail therapy and I’ll curb my impulses soon. I’m usually so strict with my book purchases!
Oh I get it, it’s crazy how the book community can influence us and make us want to buy ALL the books. It’s so annoying though, about the hardbacks? I much prefer to get paperbacks as well, they are cheaper, sure, but also way more practical :/
Hahaha, oh I can understand, if I had a thrift store like that, I’d end up with TONS of books as well. We need to find something or someone to control our book-buying urges, haha 🙂

I tend to buy books when I have the money. Sometimes I save a little extra for a while to put away to get some books and end up with a huge book haul. I also try to check out sales and such to try and get more bang for my buck!

GAH, I can’t imagine not having a local bookstore that sells English books. Luckily our country’s an English-speaking country, so we patronize English books. We have 2 big local bookstores that stock tons of English YA, and I ~USED~ to visit my favorite one (the other bookstore I try not to buy from, for certain reasons), once a week, and I usually ended up buying 1-3 books. Whoops. Now I probably only go once a month and come out with 1 book. GO ME. I HAVE used TBD though, since, of course, we aren’t America and our bookstores don’t order ALLLLL the books.
I listen to book bloggers, the hype, and myself. ALL OF THEM. I weigh in a tooon of factors before I buy books–I’ll usually check their average rating on Goodreads, then a review or four from trusted reviewers. But then, in the end, if I feel like reading it, even if everyone’s hated it, I’ll still end up buying it. XD
OH I think that’s SO cool that you have great, big local bookstores to get your books from! I feel like I’d spend tons of money on books if I had these around hahhaa 😛
I think we have the same buying process! I try and weight in tons of factors before getting a book, even if, in the end, if my gut is telling me to go for it, I will go for it anyway hahaha 🙂

Sometimes I buy books on impulse, but it rarely happens as I try to steer out of bookstores and off webshops if I can’t buy books haha. If I buy something on impulse, it’s more along the lines of ‘I meant to buy this one book and now here we are with a few more’ but it’s been a long time since that happened since I put myself on a very strict book buying ban to save money for my term abroad 😛 Though to be fair in like my second week here I bought three books because it was 3 for the price of 2 and that meant 14 pounds and these books are hard to find back home ? Also I was homesick and needed some cheering up haha
Anyway this post is very relatable! Which makes sense since neither of us has access to (a good) library 😛

IT SUCKS YOU DONT HAVE A LIBRARY, thats where more than 50% of my books came from, and if i was in France, I have NO idea what i’d do because? I RARELY BY BOOKS. I buy books like once every three months..I get sent quite a few books via trades and publishers and people being nice on twitter? So like, yeah. I’m secretly abroke bookworm but have quite big monthly book hauls because Im really lucky!? AND SIX OF CROWS MARIE!!!

I’ve worked really hard to not buy books in the last few years. I don’t buy any physical books anymore (I stopped that 5 years ago I think) because I was running out of space. Well, I will buy a physical copy of a series I absolutely loved and plan on rereading later on but only if it is on sale and I very rarely do this. So, I mostly buy eBooks and even then, I really only buy them when they are on sale (the Amazon Wishlist feature is the BEST at this since it tracks prices for you). And when it comes to those eBooks, I usually buy them because my library doesn’t have them and I’ve found it from some blogger or Goodreads.
OH I think thats so great you still manage to read so much without having to buy the books too often. I get it, at some point, having some place to put physical copies is starting to get… a bit crazy, haha. E-books are so practical this way, and often cheaper 🙂

I’m 100% with you on researching what books to get. I never buy books on impulse as well, because I always check Goodreads, see what my fellow bookworms have said about the book and generally read lots of both positive and negative Reviews. That’s why I have never done the famous ‘Cover Buy’, because I need to be hooked on the premise and have heard amazing Reviews, if the cover is nice that’s a plus but it’s never the only factor I take into account.
I’m still amazed that you have such a small physical TBR that’s truly inspirational 😀
Might I ask what English bookstores in Paris you can recommend? I’m traveling to Paris in March and I of course have to check out the bookstores 🙂
Oh yes, that’s such a great point. I don’t know if I ever bought a book ONLY because of its cover? I was tempted many, many times, but I always end up having to read and know more about the book before actually getting to it. If the cover looks amazing and the synopsis as well, well… we’ve got a winner, haha 🙂
AAAAAAAH WHEN are you going to Paris in March – if you don’t mind me asking? I might go there too…. might, ahah 🙂 I hope you will have a great time there 😀 Well, there is a WHSmith on the Rue de Rivoli, alongside the Jardins des Tuileries ; but I’d HEAVILY recommend Shakespeare & Co, it’s a small English bookshop along the Seine, close to Notre Dame, really pretty and with books EVERYWHERE, like, for real. You have to go there 😀
That’s exactly the same for me 🙂 The synopsis must interest me, otherwise I won’t pick up a book, as the risk of not liking it is too much. Covers are nice, but we know that a shiny cover doesn’t always mean we’ll end up loving the story 😮

Looking back I actually think my book buying habits have changed so much since I started blogging, I went through that phase where I brought so much simply because of reviews and recommendations from other bloggers but now I’m being more conscious about what I buy and kind of making sure it’s a book I’ll enjoy before I spend money on it.
Honestly I buy most of my books, and most of them come from Amazon as well because it’s cheaper, but I do love going into my local Waterstones and seeing what’s on the shelves there. 😀 I’m trying to control myself because I could spend so much money on books if I impulse brought but there are some series/authors who are always going to be impulse and auto-buy for me as well! 🙂 I can’t help myself.

I buy books when the oens I waited for a long time are either released either available for pre order. Like you as an international book blogger I buy online due to a lack of bookstores selling books in English!
At least we have the internet to help us get all of these new books, haha 😀

I guess I didn’t realize how limited buying books is internationally. I mostly get my novels from the library (where I volunteer weekly), on Amazon, thrift shops, garage sales, Friends of the Library sale or at used books shops in town. I buy books that I want to read over and over again, books that really touched me, and books that my library does not carry. I also will buy a book if it is cheap enough, if it is an book I have been meaning to read and I like the author. I like I like to buy books for people and usually buy books for gifts. I also just like to give people a good book, if I find one at a good price and it is one that I really enjoyed.
My TBR list is huge as I read a lot of different genres. I get book ideas from bloggers, social media and word-of-mouth. I try not to buy into the hype of new releases, I read the synopsis and if it sounds good, I will add it to my list. I try not to read all the different reviews people have on novels as everyone has their own tastes. I try to only read the reviews of people I follow and like to get their insight on the novels, just to get a feel about it.
I have a great library in my basement but I still continue to buy novels when I see them at great prices. Our library sells Friends of the Library books for $1 and $2 each so sometimes that is hard to pass up. Garage sales are also hard to pass up as they sometimes have books for under a dollar. I am always looking at the used book sections at thrift stores, the Friends of the Library sections and sales for good titles.
So, is shipping books to you internationally expensive? I realize some sellers charge per book to ship but what if they don’t? Is shipping used books to you expensive in bulk? I know there is a book rate for postage as I send books via mail but is this too much? Do you have any thrift stores or second-hand stores that sell novels? Are there any big used book sales in your area? I’m just asking as I am curious to know. Thanks!

I understand your feeling, and reading tons and tons of reviews can sometimes confuse us more than help us. I think it's great to read at least some reviews or get a feeling of what our trusted blogger friends and reviewers are thinking, though, I love doing that 🙂

Well, I am pretty lucky, since I am living in France, Amazon ships there for free – well, just as – and Book Depository does that as well and they deliver in about one to two weeks so I feel pretty lucky on that one. There are book sales, bookshops and libraries, second-hand stores as well, but, as you can imagine, with books in French. Given that I read books in English and young adult books I can never find the right selection of books I want in these kind of places, so online it is 🙂

I actually almost always buy books I’ve already read or else from authors who I really trust. Like you, I don’t buy many books; often I just buy books I can’t get at the library. I get why people struggle with buying too many books but I just can’t afford to buy that many books. Also, I know that I’m going to be a student for the next few years and probably beyond that, which means that ideally I won’t have many books because I’m going to be moving (though that will probably not happen). I feel like second hand books are often a good option, but they usually aren’t new releases (or in your c ase, in English)
I understand – to be honest, I get how some people manage to get tons of books, if they can afford to, but personally, even if sometimes I could buy more books, I refrain myself from doing so, I’m too damn reasonnable, hahaha. I think it’s so gret that you buy books you have already read from the library, that way you have shelves filled with your favorites 😀

Ah I relate so much to you, Marie!! Obviously, I’m very lucky to live in the US and have lots of bookstores supplied with many books that I enjoy reading, but I really don’t have a lot of money to buy it with, so I rarely rarely buy books. (So everything comes from friends or publishers or libraries — which I’m also lucky & privileged to have!!)
And oh god, impulse-buys are a NO for me! Usually whenever I want to buy a book, I do ALL the research and look at Goodreads to see my friends’ thoughts and general thoughts on it and make sure that I will REALLY REALLY love the book. (I definitely relate to relying a lot on the community’s thoughts on it — tho there are times when the hype TRICKS me fjsdlfjdsl.)

after my local library reopened, i stopped buying books for the most part. i really only buy books if i adored the book, i adored the cover and the book, or it’s like.. my birthday or something 😛 i usually get recommendations from other book bloggers because they know what’s good 😛

I depend so much on ratings and reviews. I read reviews like crazy. I used to buy blind by reading blurbs and choosing on title and cover. Ended up buying so many I didn’t like. I don’t buy many books any more between netgally and audible and my bookshelves I have lots but…. I love to every couple of months go to the bookstore and buy two or three. I could never buy 10 plus at a time. I would overload my brain and not know which to read first. I also leave more time to listen than read so I alway check to see if they are on audible before buying. I don’t buy blind anymore. I also use amazon a lot for getting that one book have been waiting for.
I think it’s so great to be around such a great community – we get great recommendations and this way, we manage to get some books we could really love. That’s the best 🙂
And oh yay, I couldn’t do it with 10 books, I wouldn’t know where to start either, hahaha 🙂

I agree with all of this! Fortunately I do have an amazing library nearby that does a REALLY good job on stocking up on new YA releases (sorry to make you jealous haha). But obviously they don’t have everything, or you have to wait forever to read something. So I do have to resort to buying books! But I almost rarely do this, and I maybe buy 1 book a month? There are times where I’ve left a book in my cart for more than a week, only to decide that I wasn’t gonna buy it.
I also go through the bargain aisles/Book Outlet some times, especially during sale season! So that happens once a year haha.
Hahaha oh go ahead, make me jealous, but you HAVE to read all the great books, that’s your duty now 😛
I think it’s great that you give yourself some time to think about it – sometimes I leave books for days in my cart as well, then realize I’m not really too into it anymore, haha 🙂

I used to be wayyyy more of a mess with book buying. I have gotten MUCH better. When I started blogging, I think I thought I needed ALL the books? So… now I am trying to unload all the books hah. But yeah, I would buy anything if it was on sale and I’d heard of it basically. Now, I maybe buy 20 books a year or so? And that includes ebooks and such. I just don’t have the funds for it OR the space. I am lucky that ARCs (and eARCs, mostly) exist because it would be a hardship for sure if they didn’t. Now, I mostly pre-order stuff I am extra excited for, and then if someone recommends something that I *need* I do try to wait til it’s on sale or I have a coupon- right now I am staring down two books from Book Depository that I NEED but need to be cheaper!
I used to be SO tempted, I sometimes am even now, to get ALL the books, just because I have heard about it someplace on the blogosphere. It’s CRAZY, the influence everyone can have, haha.

This is such a fantastic post, Marie! I love reading about how other people go about buying their books so this was really interesting!
Since I am on a rather strict budget at the moment, I don’t but many/any books, especially not new releases. They can be quite expensive and I need to spend my money on more reasonable things for the time being. However, there ARE books I am going to get ASAP because I am just dieing to know how the story continues (mainly this is about Bright We Burn – I am ready for Kiersten White to just completely destroy me) and probably Leah On The Offbeat!
But speaking of getting new books, ever since I decided that I do want to read more in German and found German publishers who offer fantastic blogger programs, that’s also a way that I’m getting new books (and so far they have all been FINISHED copies and mainly hardcovers too – which still surprises me) at no cost to me.
I honestly wish I had a fantastic library near me that stocked all the newest YA releases in English, but I live in a tiny town so that’s not within my reach. I’m sure bigger cities offer tons of English books, but I am HOURS away from the first proper big city. xD But in general, I LOVE libraries! I used to read my way through my local library for YEARS before I really got into YA and found that that’s all I want to read for the time being. The nuns at the library still recognize me because I used to show up there that often.
As far as who I trust and listen to before buying books, quite often it will be the hype or myself. I’ll take in what I hear about books on Twitter and around the bloggosphere and then decide if I want to invest money into a book or not. But if it’s something I KNOW I’ve been looking forward to, I’ll just listen to myself and get it.
The only time I will buy books on impulse is probably when I shop for used books! Those are usually pretty cheap (especially older English YA releases) and therefore okay in my book! It’s actually how I ended up getting a copy of The Scorpio Races in HARDCOVER for just 3€. The website I use has free shipping starting at 10€ and I needed maybe 2€ to get that free shipping (and in my head, I think its more reasonable to buy an extra book and have a physical representation of my money spend rather than paying money for shipping) and I found The Scorpio Races by chance and since it was on my TBR anyways, I went for it!

I think, in a way, it's great to be on a book budget, this way you are getting the books you only are especially eager to read and it's all the more exciting whenever you can finally get them 🙂

I have somewhat got my book-buying habits under control this year by creating a spreadsheet of books I want or am REALLY interested in and ordering/pre-ordering based on that. If I don’t like how a book sounds after I read reviews, I can take it off my list. I let myself have exceptions for books that are on sale, like cheap Kindle books or that nice hardcover of Ashley Herring Blake’s SUFFER LOVE for $3.71 with free Prime shipping. I’ve been doing a nice job of sticking to it and have only strayed from this strategy once, and I don’t even really count that because I accidentally bought an ebook with 1-click while trying to cut down the books on my Amazon wish list… -_-
My worst habit is buying used books — I have a LOT of those and they’ve added up fast. I love them, but I’m glad I’m being a little more selective right now. I don’t have space for another bookcase!
Oh, spreadsheets!! Wow, this is such a great idea, I never thought of that, but it has to be so great to keep track of all the books 🙂

I buy most of my books as well, as you said as international readers we don’t have libraries with English books that we want to read. It seriously sucks, I would love to have a library where I could find all the books that I want to read.
Bloggers have definitely influenced my TBR as well! There are soooo many books that I have added to it since I started blogging. My TBR is seriously endless, which does make me happy! 😀 I don’t buy books often either, mostly because I don’t have the money (I’m basically a broke university student).

Love this post. Like you I don’t really buy books on impulse unless it’s an auto buy author like Sarah J.MAAS. Buying books for me is like you a long process in the sense that I research so much. I have a long list of books I want to buy but I wait until a deal is on or I see it at a good price. I buy 90% of my books online as well with the exception of a discounted book store where I live which has a small YA section and sometimes has amazing finds, such as I once found The Thousandth Floor for £2.99. STEAL.
I would like to venture out of my research stage at some point and pick up a book I just wanted to because I liked the sound of it rather than tons of people have read it. After thought – my research as well is indepth but basic because I like going into books knowing barely anything so I look up ratings mostly rather than full fledged reviews!
I could type forever on this!

I did! It was frustrating at times because there’s a TON of characters. Like I’m ok with 3 POV but throw in like 5 and I start to feel stressed. But the overall plot was interesting and I enjoyed it once I got into the characters POV xx

I don’t struggle half as much as you do since I’m in the US, I really don’t know how international bloggers do it, I don’t think I could. You have a lot of self control Marie, I don’t think I would be able to control myself that much if I was living somewhere without a big library collection. I don’t buy books often at all because I’m lucky enough to have access to a public library that is usually very good about ordering new books. I’m the same way with my auto-buy authors though, I’ll buy their books, no questions asked (Alexandra Bracken and Cassandra Clare).
I also went through the same thing with knowing which books to buy. Before I was blogging, I would look at Goodreads recommended page. But now, it’s usually just book bloggers influencing me.

You and me sound very alike! I also don’t buy on impulse – I used to but not anymore. I guess when you start earning your own money, your perspective changes very quickly hahaha
I am super influenced by blogging and other reviews as well. I mainly go for the people who seem to share my tastes, of course, but I also like to experiment. I rarely buy physical copies, though, unless I really like an author/series or if I’ve enjoyed a book so much I decided to get the paperback/hardback to display on my shelf.
I’m quite the control freak as well and won’t invest in new books until I’ve read a decent amount of my backlist. I love the convenience of audiobooks as well and that has been a major shift in my buying habits.

Fantastic Post! As an international blogger, I can totally relate to this post! I don’t buy books too often either and I also buy all of my books online. Books has become pretty expensive these days. I pre-order books from my favorite authors and also books that I know I’m going to love it.

This is such a great post! Glad to see someone’s fairing much better at book buying than I do, at the moment. I’m usually able to stay away from books that I’m interested in but not desperate for, if that makes any sense. But, when it comes to most anticipated releases or auto buy authors, I cannot resist. I try to set a logical budget each month and I’m almost always able to stay within it. When I know I shouldn’t buy anymore but, need to satisfy my inner bookworm, I usually go thrift shopping for Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes! I absolutely love it because every time, I discover more editions and I also search for Greek Poetry books! You cannot imagine how ridiculously cheap they are as opposed to how much they actually sell them for! That definitely doesn’t make it better but, it gives me great pleasure and I can get many many books for the price of one! I might not find anything and just enjoy the adventure of exploring and being surrounded by books! We don’t really have a library here, it’s too far away from where I live but, I sometimes borrow Classics from my University’s library. I’ve also just discovered Awesome Books, which is the only one that will ship to Greece without a ridiculous shipping rate so, if I can find a book I want to read in their Bargain Bin, I usually go for it!

I very rarely impulse buy books either. Why would you when you have this amazing community working hard to help you find the stories that you’ll love? I really related to most of this – we are very similar in our book buying habits. I go through phases with the library. Their YA section isn’t great, and I tend to read through everything I’m interested in quite quickly, so as soon as I stop buying books I tend to be back on it again. Plus … if I get a book from the library and I fall in love with it, then I’m going to want a copy of my own anyway!

I used to only buy books as I needed them. Like I would finish reading a book and buy a new one. I never had more than maybe 2 or 3 unread books. Then I started blogging and OMG….that killed my bank account and now I have hundreds of unread books! *CRYING BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE I’LL NEVER GET TO THEM ALL* Love this post, Marie!

Ever since I started blogging, I am really lucky to get review copies and ARCs, and it’s really helped me with my book buying habits. I used to save up with my allowance every week when I was in high school so I could treat myself to a book every few weeks.
I love going on to Book Depository and checking the prices of books because who knows? Sometimes they might have a slight discount!
Aside from that, I do love going to bookstores, even though 99.18% I leave without getting anything because I am broke most of the time, unless it’s a book that I am DYING to read!
I wish the libraries here in Malaysia are more well-equipped with fiction titles but sadly, they aren’t. Which is why I either rely on review copies and ARCs or buy them.
Oh yes, checking for small discounts is the best, especially when you find a cheap book to get! 🙂
Oh it has to be so great and I admire your self control when it comes to NOT buying books while in a bookstore! I have the hardest time doing that whenever I get to an English bookshop ahah 🙂

I’ve never really thought about being an international book blogger and what that means. Now I feel like a moron, because clearly it’s more difficult than I originally thought. I wish you could get a library card in the US and just use OverDrive for ebooks and audiobooks. That would cut down on the amount you had to get for yourself.
I can relate to buying books based on reviews from Goodreads. That’s how I started before getting into book blogging. This is my second go at blogging (I stopped after having babies–no time), and I’ve been looking at everything with a new perspective. It’s been hard starting over, but I feel like I’m doing things better this time. It’s more for me.
I try to stay out of book stores, away from Amazon, and to not look too closely at what my library has available. Books, books, books everywhere, and I want them all! It’s too easy to get overwhelmed.

I also buy all my books online. It is ALWAYS cheaper – like… A LOT cheaper – online compared to in a bookstore.
I wish I had your sensibility when it comes to limiting yourself to getting new books. I live in the US and have a local library with a fantastic selection of books, but I always end up buying a book for myself if it has a pretty cover because I am WEAK!!
Literally just this past weekend I went on a huge online shopping spree for books because I am super financially responsible #sarcasm lol I am the worst!
Oh, well who can resist a really pretty cover? I get it, ahah, some books are absolutely stunning and we just want to have them on our shelves 😛

Hii!! I’m emerging from the caves of analyzing fifty thousand pieces of poetry for school. I miss you!! I’m glad you have figured out a system for buying books that works for you. I’m the same – even though I’m lucky and don’t have to buy all my books, I still do sometimes and have to be really careful because I don’t have the funds for fifty new hardcovers, haha! But eveeery once in a while I will buy a book that just looks okay, but has a pretty cover. I agree that review are super helpful! There’s this one reviewer on Goodreads who reviews pretty much every super popular YA book and because her tastes are exactly like mine I always know what to buy or not. It’s very nice.

I never really buy books on impulse either. I definitely have to check goodreads and read A LOT of reviews to see whether I want to read it. At the minute I’m on a book buying ban due to me wanting to get my physical TBR to under 10 by 2019 (because I’m stupid and love to torture myself) so that helps me NOT buy books aha

Do you run out of things to read though? Because I’ve been reading so fast, I would not last without ARCs. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about that. When I get out of my old ARCs swamp (those ones I downloaded years ago), what will I do? Will I want to read more ARCs, or not? Especially when I’ve started listening to them and now prefer that, what would I do? Buy backlist ones I can listen to, or..? And I realized, I don’t think I mind reading ARCs. Because often, they are completely unknown and unhyped, and sometimes that’s wonderful. Actually, I have recently read two books that nobody talked about and I’m like “so they’re probably nonames” and then I see them both on Goodreads newsletters, as “very anticipated books”, and I suddenly feel so weird cause I didn’t know that! And reading them on their own, without any hype, was so great! You just read the book for the book, if you know what I mean. Without anyone else’s opinion. Just mine 🙂

You are the most well-behaved bookworm I know, really! You’re giving us all very bad names, to be honest! My public library got some new, shiny young adult translations and I was so happy to see them, at first! Because I never thought they’d have young adult books there, but that was a year ago and now I kind of read most of them (or most of the ones I was interested in, at least). I went to the part of the library where we have english books and asked them about HP (isn’t HP a book every damn library should have???), guess what? They had just the first two books and then the fifth one. (that makes absolutely no sense, I hate them)
I’m so happy that I’ve gotten more opportunities to read new releases as a book blogger because now I don’t have to worry all that much about me breaking my book buying ban all that often? But there are still some auto-buy authors that I will still buy no matter how many books I have to read – just like you.

Love this post about your book buying habits! Reading almost all the books that you have before buying new ones sounds like a great habit to get into 🙂
I am lucky to have access to a good library, which is always my go-to when it comes to finding a book. I also subscribed to audiobooks via Audible, which I use for books that I can't get from my library. If I really want to read a print book that is not in my library, I will buy the ebook online. I also make impulse buys at the local second-hand store (I justify it by telling myself that they are cheap anyway, and if I don't feel like reading them, I'll just donate them right back!)
To be honest I think I also need to get into the habit of reading the books that I currently have! I often impulse-borrow from the library and neglect the books that I already own, lol 🙂

In general I prefer reading books in print, however, I love to listen to audiobooks when I am in the middle of doing something else that is relatively mindless, like cooking or exercising. It’s like killing two birds with one stone 🙂

I mostly buy all my books online as well. They are just cheaper and there’s a bigger pool of books to choose from than there is at the local bookstores. Also, I feel like blogging and knowing what my friends read has made it so much easier to weed out the books I really don’t need in my life. It really resonated with me and it felt like I could totally relate to a lot of things you said, just like you I am an international blogger and I totally understand the struggle of books being expensive! I am also heavily influenced by the community; I totally rely on reviews from trusted bloggers about what books to buy or which books to avoid. Before I started blogging I would pick up books based solely on their synopsis but now I love reading what other people thought before buying a book.
I also don’t really buy books on impulse, I don’t really visit our bookstores that often so when I go its usually because I want to buy a specific book. I have picked up books that were on special before, but only if I had them on my TBR as well (I feel like we are such magical unicorns when it comes to buying books ?). I also rarely buy books and it is a mix of online shopping vs. bookstore shopping. I don’t really order books from overseas sites because of shipping as the two books I’ve ordered from Book Depository just never made it to me, also we have a store that runs really good specials from time to time and then I’ll buy one or two books from them.
Once again I absolutely loved this post. It was so enlightening and I love how many things we have in common ?

We have an online bookstore that sometimes has special and I take advantage of that whenever it happens, but other websites are about the same price as what you would pay in store – unfortunately!

Very interesting topic Marie. I can be an impulse book buyer, but when I buy on impulse, it is typically just one or two books when I am out and about. Otherwise the majority of my book shopping is done for my birthday and Christmas. It takes me a LONG time to really come up with a wishlist of books after pouring over reviews and such. I also like to take advantage of eBook sales when the kindle version of a book I’ve been wanting goes on sale, I almost always take advantage. I also attend lots of author events and book festivals, so I try to support those events by buying the books there (even though they are often much cheaper online). I utilize my local library A LOT… this is where ALL of my audiobooks come from – my library’s digital database.

I think that’s probably a good call on Red Rising for you- as much as I love the series, if you don’t like violence it could very well be too much for you (my sister is very squeamish and I wouldn’t give it to her)
I tend to be able to handle violence a bit better in my books than in movies – I just can’t handle it in movies haha, but yes… I think it will be better for me to stay away from Red Rising anyway ahah 🙂

I don’t know what to say. I mean, I’m in awe as usual because you are a real AWEsome person (sorry!) but seriously, it’s great that you buy majority of your books and keep a check on your TBR at the same time. I don’t buy books, often. I think the last three books I bought were in November. That’s it. Yup, I feel really bad but I live in a city that’s currently focusing a lot on ‘reading’ and being a ‘literature capital’ so the libraries are pretty cool (though the fines are super high and I feel like I wouldn’t be able to have dinner if I don’t return the book on time). My cousin is a massive reader AND an impulsive buyer but he often DNFs books and doesn’t ‘love’ them like…well…we booklovers do. So he mostly passes down his books to me quite easily–he’s like a library too but I don’t have to return the book to him ever so that’s cool XD My father is another impulsive buyer but he loves buying gifts for everyone and mine usually include gift cards so the few books I do buy in a month are all from his gift card. AND NOW I FEEL BAD because ugh, I should really be buying books more and helping out the authors I love <3 Soon, soon. As for the few times when I do go for book shopping, my mom keeps a check on the books I'll be coming back home with and acts like a metal detector when the number exceeds 3. Beep, beep, beep. But here the beep is for a curse.
I loved your point about listening to the book bloggers and friend's recommendations because hell, yeah! Apart from the auto buy authors, picking up a book is always a tough decision to make and what's a community for? Loved this post, Marie!

I feel like, in a way, I'm often on a book buying ban? I refrain myself from getting books a whole lot, I'm trying to be responsible and to budget everything, I know I'm lucky enough to be able to afford my books, but… I don't know, I am responsible ahha. Also, I see SO many bloggers with book buying bans and MASSIVE BOOK HAULS and I can't relate at all. Also it makes me sad, because we can't all do these massive book hauls, then get mad about it sometimes :/

I usually just buy one book at a time, maybe two, and three is tops for me. The only exception is if I’m shopping at a thrift store or a library sale or something like that. I bought four or five books at a library sale about a year ago because they were all incredible deals at the used-book prices!

I seriously get stressed out about spending more than $20 in one shopping trip for anything other than groceries or clothes (but I really don’t go shopping for clothes very often). Two hardcovers and I’m already above the stress threshold :3

I salute your discipline! In the past two months i went absolutely nuts when it came to buying books. Keep telling myself: in March you are only allowed 5, so pick wisely… we’ll see how that goes 😀

I’m impressed that you read almost all of your physical books before buying more. I definitely can’t say that. I have bookshelves FILLED with books!!
I sort of have a guilt mechanism rooted in my mind: I tell myself that I have to read them and that is the only way that I can get more books, hahahaha. Seems to be working 😛

I am feeling like I need to get my book buying under control. I tend to buy the books I am interested when they go on sale not when I’m in the mood for them, so they sit for quite a while. I don’t even want to count how many are unread on my shelves. But this year I am putting in more effort to read off my shelves. Great post:)
