Review: One Last Stop, Casey McQuiston

Like a lot of people out there, I read Red, White & Royal Blue back when it released and, like a lot of people (again), I really fell for it. I couldn’t wait to read more from the author. I was SO excited to receive a copy of One Last Stop (thank you, sister!) and, obviously, had EXPECTATIONS. Let’s see if they were met, shall we?

I ENJOYED…

• One of my favorite things about One Last Stop was the adorable queer found family. August finds in these messy, imperfect people some friends she can count on for absolutely anything at all and I adored them all. From their first encounter to their growing friendship, I feel like I grew attached to these characters along with August and I loved that so much. Definitely one of the strongest suits of this book overall.
• This is a story about time-traveling and, while I’m not going to deny the unplausibility of it all, I personally really enjoyed how the story revolved around that: the mystery of Jane’s presence, how she ended up here, what was her story and more. I found that it brought a little more excitement to this unusual contemporary story and I was ALL here for it, hooked onto the pages and wanting to know what happened and what would happen, next.
• I loved August’s journey as she tries to figure her life out, what she wants from it and how both living with these new people and this mystery with Jane helps her into shaping herself the way she’s always meant to be, slowly but surely. I really rooted for her from the very beginning, wanting her to let more people in, to find her place and overall, to trust herself, too. I loved her.
• Of course, I’m also going to tell you about how GREAT it feels to read about a 23 years-old main character. This book fits perfectly into the emptiness I’ve been needing to fill, with these characters in their twenties still trying to find their way, to carve their own path and, to live their own adventures, too.

• I have to mention the romance, because obviously, it’s a bit part of this book. While I personally found it to be a little bit of instant-crush, I really liked the relationship between Jane and August overall. There are so many sparks between these characters, chemistry only fueled by Jane’s charm and mystery and I could really feel the chemistry, there. No spoilers, but at times I felt emotional reading the book because of the strong feelings I had for them, too.

If you’re looking for a great contemporary read with a hint of time travelling, a queer family you’ll want to be a part of and a heartwarming and heartbreaking romance, I definitely recommend One Last Stop. I know I’ll be reading more from this author!
