Review : Get Even (Don’t Get Mad #1), Gretchen McNeil

get even article

Fans of mystery, suspenseful stories, Get Even is a book for you! I could have read this page-turner in one day, but, due to, well, work and life coming in the way, I had to stop, which frustrated me a bit. Finishing the book was the biggest frustration of all, though. And I cannot wait for more. Here’s why !

Get Even, the first book of the series Don’t Get Mad,  is the story of four high school girls. They have absolutely nothing in common, but somehow, they started a secret society : Don’t Get Mad, known as DGM. Their goal? Getting revenge on everyone bullying at school, mentally, physically. Teachers, students, they all get their what they deserve thanks to DGM. But when one of their victims turns up dead…what happens?

The writing really is into action, and things are moving, sometimes fast, and that’s the best in these kind of books. At the beginning of the story, I was a little lost, though, due to the four different point of views brought by the author : I was having a hard time finding out the limits between the characters, since the point of view changes during the chapters. It was an issue for me until the end of the book, since I didn’t manage to get attached to any of the characters. They had their qualities and their faults, and I liked them, or disliked them (I couldn’t handle Bree that much, to be honest). Despite that, I have to say the characters are very different, and bringing different levels of depth into the story : they all have their own issues, and past, which was coming alive again, and it was interesting to confront that. You’re really seized into the intrigue, and the plot is well-driven, keeping you guessing until the very last page. As the pages went by, and we still had no answers, I was starting to worry. I will give out no spoilers, but there’s a reason why this is a series. I’m still wondering about the future of the main characters, especially given that cliffhanger ending. What was up with that!! If you want answers now, this isn’t a book for you, but if you want suspense, and good intrigue and distraction, well, read it right now!

I will definitely check out the second book in the Don’t Get Mad series…June, come faster please, I need answers now!

Gretchen McNeil, Get Even (Don’t Get Mad #1), published by Balzer & Bray, September 16th, 2014.

Bree, Olivia, Kitty, and Margot have nothing in common…
…at least that’s what they’d like the students and administrators of their elite private school to think. The girls have different goals, different friends, and different lives, but they share one very big secret: They’re all members of Don’t Get Mad, a secret society that anonymously takes revenge on the school’s bullies, mean girls, and tyrannical teachers.

When their latest target ends up dead with a blood-soaked “DGM” card in his hands, the girls realize that they’re not as anonymous as they thought—and that someone now wants revenge on them. Soon the clues are piling up, the police are closing in . . . and everyone has something to lose.
