Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets Past Lives in this gripping, emotional story of two childhood friends navigating the fallout of one erasing their memory of the other, from acclaimed author Sarah Suk.
Seventeen-year-old Yena Bae is spending the summer in Busan, South Korea, working at her mom’s memory-erasing clinic. She feels lost and disconnected from people, something she’s felt ever since her best friend, Lucas, moved away four years ago without a word, leaving her in limbo.
Eighteen-year-old Lucas Pak is also in Busan for the summer, visiting his grandpa, who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. But he isn’t just here for a regular visit—he’s determined to get his beloved grandpa into the new study running at the clinic, a trial program seeking to restore lost memories.
When Yena runs into Lucas again, she’s shocked to see him and even more shocked to discover that he doesn’t remember a thing about her. He’s completely erased her from his memories, and she has no idea why.
As the two reconnect, they unravel the mystery and heartache of what happened between them all those years ago—and must now reckon with whether they can forge a new beginning together.

I ENJOYED…
☂️
- This book has such a unique concept, it drew me in from the very first page. The idea of reconnecting to your own lost memories through sound is something that really compelled me – I mean, who hasn’t heard a song and instantly were reminded of a moment in their lives where they’ve heard it from the first time? I was really hooked on that from the very first page and I just loved how, the author, aside from the whole plot of the story and its characters, managed to woven such a beautiful message about the importance of memory, what memories mean, how we experience them, keep them close to heart, lose them, feel the familiarity and the loss of them all at once.
- Sarah Suk’s writing only enhanced the reading experience for me, in all the best of ways. She manages to convey the characters’ emotions so beautifully, without being too flowery and that takes a particular talent. I know I’ll want to read more from this author soon, because, my heart, oh my heart just loved this.
- Told from a dual POV, Meet Me at Blue Hour switches between Yena and Lucas’ voices and, honestly, I found myself liking both characters just as much. They both had distinct voices, yet I could really feel for each of them, their struggles, their desires, their deep care for each other and for the ones they loved. I also appreciated seeing both of them grow, in their own way and at their own rhythm, from the beginning to the end of this story.
- Of course, I can’t not talk about the relationship between these two former childhood friends. You all know this is, like, my favorite trope and it was so beautifully done, here. I was YEARNING, I really wanted them to find their way back to each other so, very badly. I loved the nostalgia-tainted memories of their past friendship, the slow reconnection to each other and more. No spoilers here, but it was such a beautifully developed relationship, I really loved that.
- The family dynamics added a really nice layer to it all. Yena has such a complex relationship with her mother, which I sometimes found a bit frustrating to read – but it was all the more realistic for it, really. I appreciated seeing it grow, evolve, not without its share of challenges, but really rewarding in the end of it all.
