Waiting on Wednesday (4) : The Remedy, Suzanne Young

I heard about Waiting on Wednesday on the fantastic Lit Up Review blog, and it seemed to me like a great idea to tag along with. Originally coming from the Breaking The Spine blog, Waiting on Wednesday allows me to talk about a book I just can’t wait to get my hands on. Let’s get started !

The Remedy, Suzanne Young

In a world before The Program…

Quinlan McKee is a closer. Since the age of seven, Quinn has held the responsibility of providing closure to grieving families with a special skill—she can “become” anyone.

Recommended by grief counselors, Quinn is hired by families to take on the short-term role of a deceased loved one between the ages of fifteen and twenty. She’s not an exact copy, of course, but she wears their clothes and changes her hair, studies them through pictures and videos, and soon, Quinn can act like them, smell like them, and be them for all intents and purposes. But to do her job successfully, she can’t get attached.

Now seventeen, Quinn is deft at recreating herself, sometimes confusing her own past with those of the people she’s portrayed. When she’s given her longest assignment, playing the role of Catalina Barnes, Quinn begins to bond with the deceased girl’s boyfriend. But that’s only the beginning of the complications, especially when Quinn finds out the truth about Catalina’s death. And the epidemic it could start

First of all, if you have no idea what The Program is, i advice you to check out its goodreads page to learn more about this fantastic series. The plot can be summarized in one word : shocking. That’s what I first told myself when I picked out the first book of this series. Why am I reading that, what am I doing to myself, I remember I kept on asking, WHY god, WHY. And, when you think about it, this is what great books are made of. Books that make you think, books that make you feel things.

It’s without surprise that, this week, I am eager to read The Remedy, by Suzanne Young. In this series, I was hooked on the plot right from the start, and I couldn’t stop reading, even though my emotions were threatening to explode. Full of action, surprises, and, well, yes, tears (I cried more than I should have reading this) ; this series was a great read.

The Remedy promises to take us before the epidemic. This is something I’m very curious about, especially regarding the way the author wants us to get into this world. We’ll see it through Quinlan’s eyes, a closer. Helping a family grieve by becoming, short-term, the loved-one they lost. Taking someone else’s place, someone else’s life. I’m intrigued to see how this is processed in the book, and how this character manages to live this strange life. And, obviously, how she gets attached to every life she touches. Another promising read, still on conflicted feelings, and on how knowing how you can live your own life. I loved Suzanne Young’s writing, too, without artifice and letting us know all the right emotions. I cannot wait to see what this prequel holds!
