Today’s review is going to be a bit different than usual, because this is not a young adult book – for once. But I got lucky enough to receive my first physical book from a publisher, this new experience I was very interested into, so I dove in head-first, and I am glad I did.
?
“The world is big and I am not but I am still enough.”
Pick Me Up is one of these bookish journal that you can, and should keep around with you on days you’re feeling blue, on days you’re feeling moody, on everyday you can and want to. It’s not a book you can, nor should read from page one to the last – hell, the pages aren’t even numbered, and that’s what matters. It’s a book you should live with, grow with, learn from, and get a little stronger everyday with. When I come to think about it, as I am writing this, it seems like the perfect book to end this shitty year with, a book filled with hope and pep talks for you, for now, for later, as the catch line is saying it.
?
“It can be scary or hard to be true to yourself. You may need to bide your time until the right moment.
But you only get one life and you deserve to live it. For real.”
Much like the Wreck This Journal, if any of you are familiar with this kind of famous journal you’re supposed to torn to pieces, burn, take everywhere, write in it and love it, Pick Me Up offers spaces to write your thoughts in, then leave it for later. Reflect on a moment, a second, take a breath, enjoy the silence with very simple words, not once ordered or bossed around, but at your own rhythm. It can take you a year to get through this book, a year to open it again at random to the same page where you wrote your feelings a long time ago, and reflect on these again. How you changed, grow.
It’s hard to review this kind of positive book, so I thought I’d leave you here with some quotes and pictures taken from the book.

Purchase the book from Amazon – Book Depository – Barnes&Nobles.
Many thanks to Penguin Random House and Tarcher Perigee for sending me this book.

Adam J. Kurtz, Pick Me Up: A pep talk for now or later, Published by Tarcher Perigee, October 4th 2016.
A quirky, creative companion that offers a pick-me-up on every page
On the heels of his internationally successful first book, 1 Page at a Time, graphic designer and illustrator Adam J. Kurtz delivers another intimate and engaging journal for anyone who loves to explore ideas, record thoughts and feelings, and capture those fleeting but amazing moments of everyday life.
Unlike a linear journal, this book can be opened up to any page, encouraging and engaging readers time and time again through continued use. Rather than simply complete tasks and turn pages, users are encouraged to leave their mark, and if they land on the same page days or weeks later, they can review, reflect, and revise their previous response.
Feeling lonely? Pensive? Peeved? Questioning? This deceptively simple book offers perspective, hope, and a twist of existential metaphor – and is perfect to pick up again and again.

This looks so cute!
It really was 🙂
Your handwriting, Marie. I also like, what are those, gel pens?? And this book is so unique! Personally, I don’t like the journal type since I’d never keep up with it. Honestly, I’d probably forget that I have it after a few entries. But thanks for sharing this with us. I’m sure it’ll be a great therapeutic outlet to vent for some folks, because we did indeed have an abysmal year in 2016. Sigh.
Oh thank you, Summer! Yes those are gel pens 😀 I understand, I find it hard to keep up with these kind of books as well, but what I found great is how, even if I forgot about it for a couple days, I could always come back to it and not feel “late” or anything. Thank you! <3 <3
I have a passion for this sort of book which comes and goes. Around the new year and when I’m feeling down about my future I always crave them. Something about a physical book I can put all my thoughts, feelings, and ideas into is comforting to me. I love the prompts. But, if I’m happy and motivated in my life, I tend to walk right past these sorts of books.
So right about now? I am definitely craving a copy of this. 🙂
OHh well I’m glad to hear you could use that book. I think that everyone at some point in his/her life, could have a book like this. Even if it’s just to read a couple of the motivational quotes, it always makes me feel better 🙂
Awww I love the idea of this! It really does remind me of Wreck This Journal, which I tried doing with a friend of mine but neither of us finished it ?. I think I would like this one way more than I did that one though. Great review, Marie! ?
Thank you so, so much Melissa! I hope you’ll want to try it out 😀
I didn’t know about these kinds of books, but it does seem like a perfect idea to get some inspiration and self-reflect. Thank you for the pictures! It looks cute. Seems like a great gift idea as well 🙂 Oh, and Happy New Year, Marie!
Thank you so much! And happy new year to you too! <3
Ahh this is so cool!! I love Wreck this Journal- so this would be right up my street!!
Ohh well I think you could love that one as well! 🙂 Thank you so much! <3
I love the idea of books like this. I don’t own one myself but I have brought a few for gifts for my friends and they’ve loved them. It’s such a unique way to journal your thoughts isn’t it? Have you started writing in this one yet?
Maybe I should buy this one for myself and try and complete it! 😀
It is such a unique book, also it’s a great idea for a gift, you’re right! If you’re feeling like it, you should try and write in it yay 🙂
I am thinking about different ways to journal about books and what I read. My options so far are; something like this, the listography book I featured on a TTT post a couple of weeks back, and bullet journalling. Who knows I may try all three! 😀
Ohhh yes, well you should try all three and tell me which one works better..I’d love to know haha 😀
I will definitely let you know in that case! 😀
Ooooohhh this was published on my birthday which is cool! I’ve seen (Although not used) Wreck This Journal, and this looks just as fun. Thank you for sharing 🙂
Ohhh that’s so great! Youre welcome, I hope this inspires you 🙂 <3
Great review! I love the idea behind this book. We all need this kind of companion! Also, congrats on receiving your first physical book from a publisher!! 🙂
Thank you so, so much my Sweechie! I really like it too 🙂
