I’ve read and really enjoyed all of Sophie Gonzales’ books so far. They often end up being the perfect story if you’re looking for something light and fun and queer to read. Let’s see what I thought about her latest release, shall we?

Ivy Winslow has the house to herself for a week while her parents are away. She’s planning to use this newfound freedom to binge-watch her favorite fantasy TV show, H-MAD, and hang out with her best friend, Henry. She’ll also have to avoid her former best friend-turned enemy (and neighbor), Mack. But things quickly go awry when Ivy wakes up to find Weston, the gorgeous, very fictional main character of H-MAD in her bedroom, claiming to be her soul mate.
Ivy realizes that her fanfic writing has somehow brought Weston as she’s imagined him to life. But it turns out that the tropes she swoons over in her stories are slightly less romantic in reality, and her not-so-fictional crush is causing some real-world problems. To figure out why Weston is here and what to do with him, Ivy decides to team up with Henry and (against her better judgment) Mack. But with Mack back in her life, Ivy starts to wonder if Weston, her “perfect guy”, is the one who’s truly perfect for her . . . or if that was someone else all along.

- I absolutely loved the concept behind The Perfect Guy Doesn’t Exist. A fanfic writer giving life to her favorite TV show character and then, having absolutely no idea what to do with him? That sounds fun, right? I just really loved the whole idea behind this book and thought it was fairly well executed, as well. It’s unexpected, it’s wildly fun and it’s really entertaining to follow the main characters, as they try figuring out where he comes from and how -or if?- he should leave.
- Another thing to love about this book: the characters, especially the relationships between Henry, Mack and Ivy. I loved the genuine, fun, heartwarming friendship between Henry and Ivy. Henry’s sarcasm is just so much fun to read! I also enjoyed the banter and interaction, filled with resentment and past-unresolved between Mack and Ivy, definitely bringing up the tension in the story up a notch. Weston, the TV character come to life, is another fun addition to the cast. He’s kind of ridiculous, at times, but also ridiculously endearing!
- Ivy was a wonderful main character, most of it all because she’s so real. She’s anxious, scared of being lonely and it felt highly relatable, at times.
- The way this book treats friendships and friendships fall-outs was really, really good, for me. The way Ivy and Mack grew apart, the way their relationships slowly faded away in the background felt painfully realistic to me.

- I have to say that I wasn’t completely sold on the romance, unfortunately. While I enjoyed Mack and Ivy’s interactions, I didn’t personally feel the spark, that little thing that makes me feel invested in the romance a whole damn lot. It’s definitely a personal feeling though, so take it with a pinch of salt!

The Perfect Guy Doesn’t Exist is wildly fun, really. It’s the kind of unserious contemporary book you can easily binge read, with endearing characters you’ll fall for. I didn’t entirely fall for it because of personal feelings, but don’t let that stop you from trying it out, if the concept seems fun to you! Recommending it.

I’m planning on reading this one, like every Sophie Gonzales book, hehe. The concept is so fun and interesting! I remember reading something similar along the lines to a girl writing her best friend into existence except of course it didn’t go perfectly. So yeah, excited for this book!

I just picked this up the other week. I do need to catch up on Gonzales’ other books too though. I think Perfect on Paper was the last one I read. Sorry the romance didn’t sell this one for you. Fingers crossed for the next one!!
