Hello there! How are you guys? How was March? Mine was pretty good. Work has been busy but it’s been very productive. I also made great memories with my lovely family. And…I went to Disneyland Paris for a weekend! It was sunny and magical even if there was WAY too many people.
We are already well into April and…it’s my birthday month! God, I feel so old. Can we stop time already?! Anyway… to celebrate I’ve decided to do a little throwback on my life as reader. How the hell did I become SO obsessed with books?!
πͺ JUST LIKE MAMA
My mom has always been a big reader so there were always books lying around in the house. But when I was a child, I didn’t read a lot. I mean, I read little children books, comics and even mangas but that’s about it. I read what I was supposed to read for school and…yeah, it wasn’t that interesting. It was French classics and I was NOT impressed, haha!
πͺ LET’S GO TO HOGWARTS
I think my passion for books really blossomed when I started high school. I remember that they were making lots of movies based on books and it made me want to read them. I remember being obsessed with Harry Potter! It was THE book that really got me into reading and made me realize that reading is actually FUN! I couldn’t wait for the French translation of the next book to come out so I started reading in English. I was way too impatient, that’s how it all started I guess. I never looked back and to this day, I’m still reading exclusively in English.
At the time, I was really into Twilight, oh my…can you feel the shame?! I actually brought that HUGE 700-pages-long book to school. My bag was so heavy but no regrets, that’s the life of a true reader! I loved fantasy stories when I was a teenager, I guess I saw it as a escape from reality or something.
I fell in love with Uglies, its world-building, characters and writing. I read that series more than once and that’s how I discovered my one true love : dystopia stories.
πͺ HELLO, I’M A MARSHMALLOW
As I went to college, I still read but not very much. I was busy with school and friends, it wasn’t my priority. I got back to it when I finished school and wasn’t working for a little while. Suddenly, I had all the time in the world to read. That’s the silver lining of being jobless, haha! I registered to Goodreads and well, HELLO BEAUTIFUL BOOKS (what a wonderful website, isn’t it?). I got into contemporary and left out dystopia, I needed happy endings.
When I started working, I didn’t stop reading. I found my way back to dystopia and added contemporary to my favorite genres. I tried to read one after the other to keep it interesting and keep the boredom at bay. I read on the train going back to my parent’s house on the weekends and before going to bed. It was relaxing, always a pleasure and never a burden.
πͺ IT’S MY SISTER’S FAULT
My sister started book blogging and everything kind of accelerated. Suddenly my TBR was HUGE, book bloggers were recommending her books and publishers sending her some. I started writing once a month on her blog and I discovered more books every day. It was raining books! I went from reading one book every two weeks to one book per week and I regret absolutely nothing. Thank YOU!
πͺ A TRUE BOOKAHOLIC
Today, I’ve never been SO into reading. All those words, all those characters, all those worlds…we say that a reader lives a thousand lives before he dies and the ones who never reads lives only once, and you know what? It never felt more true. Keep on reading folks!
.How did YOU become obsessed with books? Was there a turning point in your life?Β

I love learning how people get in to readings. It’s interesting that I didn’t read much in university either. There are just too many distractions!
The book that really sparked my passion for reading was The Outsiders. I read it in 8th grade and after that I was hooked.

Yeah, way too many distractions and a whole new world to get used to! I don’t think we’re the only ones who didn’t read a lot in college. Awesome! Thanks for sharing, I’m always curious to know which book got people into reading π

Thank you for this post! I love reading these little insights into how people became who they are today. π
Neither of my parents are readers but I am a huge bookaholic. I remember becoming obsessed when I was 6 years old, after I picked up a Mythology book that was way above my reading level. I was always ahead of my classes when it came to reading after that, reading Harry Potter at 7 and then branching out to so many other series.
I canβt imagine my life without books! There was a period however that I stopped reading for two years. I started to dance more during that period of time and began to watch way more anime!

Aww, thank you so so much for your kind words. I’m happy you enjoyed my post, I had fun writing it π It’s so great that you got into reading on your own. When family members don’t really read, reading is not always the first thing children choose to do to have fun! Yaaay to Harry Potter ππ Same here, my life would be kind of empty without all of my books! Yeah…I think there is always a time when reading is not the priority. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your story ππ

Happy birthday! Stephen King started my reading obsession. I only read school books until I discovered his stuff when I was 11 years old. I discovered Harry Potter around the same time and then got obsessed with those. I feel like I spent most of my life waiting for the next Harry Potter book to come out.

I’m always surprised to hear that SO many people got into reading thanks to Harry Potter, JK Rowling can be proud I think π Haha, same here! I felt so empty when I finished the last book π

Goodreads truly is a wonderful website! Before I was REALLY obsessed with reading, thatβs where I got all my book recommendations (the Goodreads Choice Awards nominees and winners are my favorite shelves to lurk on). Just like you, writing about books on my blog definitely solidified the obsession π.

This is a great post! I wasn’t born a book lover! My love for books began in High school! I used to read a lot of Paranormal books in my teens like books by L.J. Smith’s, ellen schreiber, Holly Black, and Amelia Atwater Rhodes etc., and later I started to explore to more genres. Fantasy is my all time favorite genre! π
Happy Birthday month! π

omg! i always loved books and reading, but i definitely started getting obsessed with reading after i read harry potter when i was 10 years old. i read sooo many books during my pre teen/teenage years (i sound like i’m so old but i’m only 20 i swear) and then around 17/18 i started slowing down, because of the end of high school and i was getting into cegep (which is like college in quebec) now i’m in my first year of uni and i’m hope to go back to where i was but i know i will never be able to read as much as i used to, mostly because i’m always on social media and because of school and my program. but i’m gonna do my best!!
i loved reading this post!!!

Aww, thank you so so much that’s sweet of you to say ππ Harry Potter got a LOT of people into reading, that’s crazy π± Yeah, I think that many people read a bit less when they get into college. It’s a whole new world to get used to! I think that the most important thing to remember is that reading should stay fun and never become a burden. If there is a period of time when we don’t feel like reading, we really shouldn’t have to. We’ll come back to it soon enough π Thanks for stopping by π

I loved this post so much! (And not just because of all the awesome gifs.) I love hearing how people became readers and how they grew from then.
It’s funny because I started reading a lot when I was 7-8 and since then I have made most of my closest friendships based on a love of books! My best friend from elementary school introduced me to Harry Potter. My best friend from high school went with me to my first book event. And my newest stage in life, college, introduced me to Chana, who I now blog with. I find it kind of crazy, but also kind of wonderful, how well books are able to unite people!

For me, I don’t think there was a turning point. My mum is a huge reader, so I always had books around me, she read me books, we went to the library… I always loved reading π It changed through time, at some point I started caring too much about what people thought about what I read, but now I’m back to simply reading what I want βΊοΈ

This was really fun to read– my reading has definitely increased in size and intensity over time. It was like my mum reads so I did (snap), I read movie adaptions, I found book tube and now I don’t know where my TBR starts and ends haha!!
Bringing twilight to school— I love your devotion to books there haha!! I think I brought Twilight to school at one point because I was doing it for a book project (which I would dread to read now as it was probably terrible)!!
I love reading before bed as well— it is always a nice end to the day!! β€

I’m trying to think if I had a turning point where I remember being obsessed with books. I’ve always loved reading, like you I think Hogwarts was a major reason for me, I mean when i was younger Harry Potter was my life, and oh I had the Twilight phase too don’t worry. In fact it was Twilight I remember really getting me into the YA genre so even though it wasn’t a great book I’ve got that to thank it for. π
Either way, I may not know the reason I’m obsessed with books but I’m thankful I am. I don’t know what I’d be doing if I wasn’t obsessed with reading but I know my life wouldn’t be anywhere near as fun.
Great post. π β€

I don’t think we can say that about a lot of books π Haha, glad I’m not alone! π I think Twilight was a phase we needed to go through π I totally agree with you, I really don’t know what I would be doing if I wasn’t into reading. It’s such a wonderful passion, my life would seem dull and without imagination. It’s my little escape from reality π Thank you so much Beth, talk to you soon ππ

I relate to this so much because my brother was always a huge reader and we had lots of books lying around in our house. We also travelled a lot so I remember always buying books at the train station (altho that was mostly just comics lol).
I think I used to randomly pick up the books my brother got from the library and slowly got obsessed with Enid Blyton, Nancy Drew, Rick Riordan and then slowly YA.
I TOTALLY relate to bringing big books to school because of which my bag used to be so heavy ππ

I really love learning. Educational books have always been my favorites. However I struggle to much to read. I’ve never built that habit. I usually read during the holidays, I can finish two books in one month, and I love it! But during college time it looks like motivation just lacks. Help ahah!

Happy birthday Nyx! My birthday is also in April, the 6th, so obviously the best people are born in April.
I’ve always been a reader. My parents were not big readers BUT my Mom took me and my brothers to the library every week. I also attribute my love for reading to having amazing school librarians growing up. My school librarian always had a stack of books set aside for me every week π The first book that made me fall in love with reading was Ella Enchanted. I was also a 90s kid, so Harry Potter was in full swing. I was 10 when the first book came out, so I literally grew up with Harry. I didn’t read much during high school or college because I was busy with school reading, but once I graduated I was back in reading mode.
Thanks for sharing!
