Happy Sunday, friends! I feel a bit rusty writing this, if I’m being completely honest. I haven’t been writing blog posts in over two weeks now, since I took my little break and went on a couple days’ holidays and I hope I haven’t lost my touch, or something. I don’t know if that makes any sense, but well. Bear with me.
Today and because some people asked me to in my latest post, I have decided to tell you about my latest trip to Berlin. I haven’t written blog posts in a while and it’s been even longer since I wrote a blog post about traveling, so… here’s to hoping you will all enjoy it.
If there’s something you should know about me, it’s that I hate taking the plane. Weird, right. I love traveling, travel as much as I can and yet, I just really hate taking the plane somehow. Yet, there are places you can’t go without taking a plane and the anxious in me just takes that stupid part of traveling and tries to forget about it, only to focus on the goal. The new destination and HOLIDAYS.
We arrived in Berlin late afternoon and thankfully did not get lost in or outside of the airport, easily finding the train station to get to the city center. OBVIOUSLY we were sitting next to some French people – because what’s the fun in travelling when you’re NOT surrounded by people speaking French? (that was really ironic okay).
We found our way to Alexanderplatz, only to be faced right away with a crazy-high television tower and one of the main attractions of Berlin. Surrounding Alexanderplatz is a small, bustling area filled with tramways that WILL ring at you if you’re standing in their way, popular shops, restaurants and your local Starbucks, too. After leaving at 11 a.m and only arriving at 5 p.m, we were pretty tired to explore the city already and chose to get some rest, go out for some pizza and leave all the exploring for the next morning.
Exploring Berlin’s rich, complex and sad history
After a goodnight’s sleep, we got up bright and early to take some energizing breakfast before getting on the road. The sunshine and warmth grazed us with its presence, making this day way more fun.
As you might know from your history classes, Berlin has a rich, sad and complex history and you can see reminders of it all in lots of places. We saw it on the very first day, while passing on a long exposition relating the history of the city in the 1930’s, seeing a pan of the Berlin Wall, still up and devoted of any kind of street art on it, raw and cruel. We remembered it as we went by Check Point Charlie, this place where people used to pass to go from West to East Berlin. Now, really, it’s a bit of a tourist trap, but the sign remaining is really good. Right next to a KFC. Oh, the modern world.
We tried out the subway for the first time, clean, busy and insanely hot, as any kind of subway is in any big city. To get the heavy history out of our minds a little bit, we visited the Zoo, some gigantic malls where a bearded German guy trying to speak English to us made conversation for a while.
Then, we got to one of the most powerful places I’ve seen on this trip, the Holocaust Memorial. It seems like nothing, on the pictures, but it really is something. Little rectangular stones, growing bigger and bigger as you walk, until they’re on the top of your head, making you feeling a bit claustrophobic. A place to remember some awful things, also a powerful Memorial to put on your bucket list for sure.
After a couple minutes’ walk North, away from the memorial, here it comes. The very clichΓ© photography of Berlin, the Brandenburg Tower. Obviously we had to pass by, even if the amount of tourists taking pictures made taking a worthy picture a bit challenging. Still, a beautiful monument to see, especially as the sun goes down.
There are many places to get a beautiful view of the city – I’m very fond of beautiful views!, but if you’re looking for something free of charge, try out the Bundestag Dome. All you need to do is make a reservation online (early, like, two weeks before at least!) and then, after a security check and a very crammed elevator, you’re free to take a look at amazing, panoramic views of the city. A perfect place to end the day.
Street Art, the East Side Gallery and best Burger in Berlin
Berlin is well-known for its street art and after seeing it for myself, I can tell you that yes, it IS pretty amazing. I mean. Look at this.
Yes. This is the wall of a house.
On the next day of our holidays, we headed out to see some street art and the biggest pan of the Berlin Wall still up: The East Side Gallery, an 1.8 km-long pan of the Berlin Wall, decorated with street art by international artists. It was a kind of gray-but-not-rainy day as we walked along the entire wall, discovering gorgeous art I’ll let you see for yourself.
We tried out the best burger in Berlin, Burgermeister -well, that’s his reputation!. Located right under the subway rails, a small house with three people making burgers, uncomfortable seats and kind of next to cars passing by. The location was not the best, but the burgers were pretty amazing.
Berlin has its fair of great museums as well, but due to time, we weren’t able to visit them all. The Natural History Museum has the biggest dinosaur skeleton ever, or of Europe (like, 13 meters high), if you’re into this kind of thing. I kind of was, which is why this museum was one of our picks. There are tons of other museums to see though, about history, ancient Egypt, whatever strikes your fancy. We mostly explored them from outside, seeing the gorgeous buildings historical Berlin has to offer.
Lastly, we had to see the Berlin Cathedral for ourselves, one of the monuments I was most eager to get to. OBVIOUSLY something had to go wrong – half of it was under construction, ruining my perfect shot. It was still absolutely stunning, but WHY.
There would be much more to say about the city, but I feel like my recap is already way too long and no one will read it all the way anyway. There are gorgeous buildings, churches, monuments and streets, unsettling street art and food. There are gigantic roads and fearless bikes drivers, great malls and loads of German people I struggled to understand.
As a whole, Berlin is a gorgeous city, perfect if you’re looking for a couple days’ trip in an European city charged with history. I loved my time there and, aerm, let’s be honest, I can’t wait to get back on the road again. Soon.
I hope you enjoyed this recap – sorry if it got a bit long and rambly and thank you very much if you’ve read it all the way to the end! IF you have any question about the city, my trip or anything else, feel free to ask.
Would you like to visit Berlin? Did you already? Did you enjoy it?
Do you like taking the plane, if you already did? Why or why not? Any advice to just, get over it? I could use it haha. Feel free to let me know your thoughts in comments, would love to hear from you all!
I’d love to visit Germany one day! The culture, history and pretty museums fascinate me to go there hopefully maybe in another 3-4 years.

Oh god I am exactly the same as you – I love to travel but I HATE to fly. I’m afraid I don’t really have many tips. I sometimes rehearse in my head the steps of going through the airport, through security etc and something about that calms me down beforehand, but I still freak when the plane actually takes off.
It sounds like you had a lovely time in Berlin! I like your travel blogs, and you didn’t read rusty at all. I definitely want to go to Berlin one day π

Haha Marie I hate taking the plane too! But as I wanted to go to the US so bad …no choice! The boat would take far too long. I tried hypnosis and homeopathy and it helped. I noticed the more I take it the less I am frightened… What you described about the holocaust memorial…I visited the American cemetery in Normandy years ago and it was impressive but peaceful. Then we visited the German cemetery and it was so different! So sad really…

YAY! I am so glad you wrote this post! I went to Berlin with school, so it definitely wasn’t the same as getting to roam free in the city, but some things still stuck out. I remember the Bundestag being closed because there were some terror warnings, but it also would have been quite the hassle to get 40 people in there. Anyway, the open roads and sad history feel very true. Sometimes it was too open, too much planned architecture for me. I think it has a lot to do with which parts of the city you run around in though?
This was super interesting to read π

Oh no! Too bad you couldn’t go to the Bundestag -it had such a great view, but yeah with such a big group, it might have been a bit annoying, too
Yeah I think so – the city felt very different, depending on which neighborhood you were, at least for us. I loved the historical center, but didn’t feel at ease in some other neighborhoods sometimes. I guess it’s like that in every big city, though, some places are better than others π
Aw thank you so much!! I’m so glad you liked reading this β€ β€ β€

This is such an awesome post Marie! I’m glad you had a great vacation. Looks like you had some amazing and powerful experiences. The street art looks incredible!! Also, I’m glad you got to explore Berlin’s history. The Holocaust Memorial seem so powerful and well made. Lastly, I agree with you, airplanes make me nervous, plus the space for each seat is so small! I want to visit Berlin one day.

I’m the same as you, I hate flying on airplanes! Unfortunately, sometimes it’s necessary…but the whole time I’m on the plane I’m pretty terrified. I think it’s because I feel so out of control. Usually I just listen to music or read and just try to pretend I’m somewhere else…it sometimes works. π

Wow I really enjoyed reading about your trip to Berlin, which definitely made me want to visit as well. So glad to hear that you enjoyed this trip! Thanks for sharing these beautiful photos!
I actually really love plane rides. The flight to a destination is filled with anticipation and new possibilities. The flight back home is like a buffer zone between travelling and real life. I love being able to curl up with a book during the flight. I also love looking out the window when the plane is ascending and descending. I even love food on a plane (the fact that it is on a plane somehow makes the food taste better haha…) I think I must be crazy because not many people I know love flying π

I’m so happy to hear that you had such a fantastic time in Berlin and that you got to see some of the fantastic things the city has to offer! And seeing all your pictures definitely makes me want to explore Berlin again too – I feel like I would have a different appreciation for the city and its offers now as an adult than I did as a 16-year-old teen!
We went to Berlin on a class trip in year 9 (so, 2005?) and while it was FREEZING cold (we went the first week of December, I think) it was absolutely magical seeing Unter Den Linden with all those fairy lights! And YES to the Brandenburger Tor! That would probably be one of the first things I’d want to do too – maybe even at night when it looks beautiful with all the lights and stuff!
I’ve never had the chance to see the Berlin Wall (or, pieces of it) before because that wasn’t part of our schedule but if I ever go back that’s 100% something I’d want to explore and see in person.
And as far as getting on planes goes, I’ve only ever been on one twice on my way to and from Barcelona for a school trip too. I remember being really nervous about it and missing out on a chance of getting the window seat because I was scared and had my friend sit there. xD So, unfortunately, I can’t really help you much. But the Youtuber Zoella recently did a video about how she dealt with her anxiety when it comes to traveling – maybe that’s something that would be helpful to you? I definitely thought it was really interesting and had some good overall tips for traveling too!

I’d love to visit Berlin one day, I love history and it seems like there’s so much of it in Berlin that I won’t get to experience anywhere else. Anyway, it didn’t matter much for being the history buffs that we are, we were more interested in the places that he’d been to, which we read about in books. The museums are a treat though, as far as I know.
And yeah, that wall does look a bit bare, with all its insides sticking out… π¦

Reading this post made me wish I was in Berlin! I went last summer as part of a scholarship for German language learners and it was absolutely incredible. Just to be in the city where so much history had taken place blew my mind — like you mentioned, it’s pretty heavy stuff, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it as my group visited the Berlin Wall, the Holocaust Memorial, and the Jewish history museum. Thanks for sharing your experiences, it was a great trip down memory lane seeing this post. π
(P.S. I totally agree with you about airplanes — I hate flying too, even though I love traveling! There’s something about being cooped up for hours in a metal can high above the Earth that doesn’t exactly excite me. If only there was an easier way to travel between countries.)

Oh I feel the same way, I wish we could, fly or teleport or something haha, that would be so much better – and cooler π
Thank you so much for your sweet comment β€ β€

Great travel diary post and it was great to be around there with you! The photos were a great addition. I have been to Germany several times (it’s right next door to the Netherlands after all.) But I actually have only been to Berlin once, and not really to travel and sight see. I would like to see the wall but I don’t have much other interest. There is a lot of sad and really deep history there, as you’ve shown us.

I hope you'll get to go to Berlin someday – it is a gorgeous city and the Berlin Wall remains are impressive. π

Omg that looks so amazing! I do love traveling and I definitely got to put Berlin on the list! It definitely is full of history! I recently went to Europe for a trip. Paris, Barcelona, some of Italy (Napoli, Rome, Florence), and Zurich in Switzerland! It was so much fun! I definitely want to visit more of Europe soon because it was amazing! As for planes, I do not like the landing as I always have a massive headache but the takeoff, my mom has always taught me to chew gum and thatβs how I get through it. The entire plane ride I just read to make me feel better. But I donβt absolutely hate plane rides.

I’m so excited that you got to visit Berlin!!! π It made me so happy to look at the pictures you took and read what you visited – it looks like you got a lot done during your time in the city! You should definitely check out the Curious Fox bookstore next time, it’s a used book store for English books that’s a bit out of the city but sooo worth it! I have been to Berlin 4? or so times! I have not been to the Burgermeister, I really need to visit it next time!

I feel like I’ve gotten to know Europe better just by reading your travel posts π Your post on Berlin was the perfect length — I’m definitely guilty of rambling on and on about the places I go to on my travels, though, so I’m trying really hard to be more concise with my posts! But honestly, isn’t travel just something you could write about forever? π
Also, I ran into a similar situation with the Sagrada FamΓlia Church in Spain, because it was under construction as well when I got there. I think the actual church itself is unfinished, though, so there wasn’t much I could do about the poles and construction cranes covering the church in my pictures π
I’m glad you had fun in Berlin! π

AHHHH this makes me SO happy β€ I hope to keep on making you know Europe better and making you travel with my blog posts, as much as I can β€ β€
Oh yes, definitely – I'm trying to be concise, but I could write about everything for hours, I love it so much π
It's too bad whenever there are construction, ruining our pictures, haha, but I guess there's nothing we can do about that. Except, coming back later in the next years? π
Thank you so much!! β€
